Leadership/Outdoorsmanship, Thursday Morning, Danger Room

Students arriving in the Danger Room found it to resemble a large cement room with seating not unlike that in the gym for sports events. Forward, left, and right were large steel doors with valve locks on them. On the lowest bench, an array of safety equipment had been laid out: fire-retardant jackets, pants, and boots, as well as hoods, and self-contained breathing apparati (or SCBAs); fire extinguishers lined the bench across the aisle.

Honor stood just before one of the steel doors at the front of the room. Her guardsman, Andrew LaFollet, hovered protectively off to the side, and -- for a change -- Nimitz was nowhere to be found. If one guessed he didn't want to be anywhere near the heat, they might be right.

"Come in please, sign in, and take a seat while I upload some background reading for you. We'll begin with some activities after you've read." She smiled up at the students filtering in. "If you don't have your minicomp with you, please find someone who does and share the material."

After a moment, the students with minicomps found several documents uploaded to their computers:

Information on the Fire Triangle/Tetrahedron

Classification of Fuels

The Basics of Fire Control

Honor gave the students time to read through the documentation before continuing. "As you might have guessed, we're going to work on basic damage control. At the end of the class period, you will be divided into two teams. Each team leader will be fed 'live' damage control information. They will then lead their team to the appropriate hatch and extinguish the fires. Each of you will be wearing the gear you see, and using the fire extinguishers on the opposite aisle."

She then spent the next few minutes demonstrating -- with the assistance of a somewhat disgruntled LaFollet -- the appropriate way to wear the gear that had been provided. "It is extremely important that you wear this the way it was intended. To do otherwise could injure you and, as a result, increase the risks to your teammates.

"Now, suit up each of you, and we'll run through a few examples. Once everyone feels more comfortable, we'll divide into teams. Mr. Pevensie, you'll lead one team, and, ah, Ms. Longstocking, would you lead the other?"

Honor led the students through several fires each, emphasizing the need to point the extinguisher at the base of the fire, and to be sure to put it out completely. Once she was satisfied they were handling the equipment okay, she then turned them loose to form teams (with the appropriate supervision, of course).

"You'll be getting your location information shortly. Pay close attention to the hatch numbers, and make sure you open the right one!"

[OOC: OCD threads up! Sorry for the reliance on Wiki...Please keep in mind that this is definitely an abbreviated course. Bel, no helping the fire! ::grin::]

Bel looked at the equipment. "I don't need this. It's not going to fit anyway."

Pippi has done up her suit in desert fashon all by herself...

Or maybe she's a struggling tangled mass on the floor.

Whichever.

It took Anders a while to pick through the pile of fire-retardant clothing and find pants and a jacket that would fit him (stupid growth spurts). Eventually he did find one of everything and retreated to a corner to suit up.

But then there was the trouble of getting all the cords tangled up inside the sleeves and having to take everything off, disentangle himself, and put the jacket or pants back on again. And the SCBA was going to give him some trouble.

At least he knew how to use a fire extinguisher . . .

Elizabeth had managed the pants and the jacket and was now looking at the SCBA with some trepidition.

Alanna was almost completely tied up within moments. As she scoweled and tried to get untied, Faithful happily batted at a stray cord. "You're not helping." "I'm not trying to."

Sawyer suited up easily on his own.

Anders did a little better than he'd expected to do. Granted, one little grease fire in the Home Ec classroom didn't qualify as serious firefighting training; still, he and Sam Carter had managed to take care of that, and knowing that gave Anders enough of a confidence boost to keep from panicking.

He could do this. Or at least, he could learn.

Peter was a bit surprised at how many memories of watching firefighters during the Blitz the lecture and materials brought up. He'd not participated putting out any of the fires besides one of two in his garden due to his age, of course, but he and Edmund had watched every moment they'd had. As long as he remembered that these were just practice exercises, he was fine.

Tim is shaken by the outfit, but manages to put out the fire. He has to adjust his aim at first though, and almost drops the extinguisher. He's not too happy about this.

Pippi does quite well putting out the fires, though the bulkyness of the suit does get a bit in the way.

When she's done? She sprays the remainder of the various extinguishers all over the place.

Just to be safe...

Yeah. Safety first.

Elizabeth was slightly - okay, more than slightly - nervous when it came to putting out the fires. She was also obviously very uncomfortable with the outfit and equipment.

Alanna found herself dealing suprisingly well with the fire.

Well, fire had always been okay with him especially when it had to do with lighting up a cigarette or starting a camp fire or soemthing - so this wasn't much of a challenge for him.

Peter walked up to Honor after her lecture. "Hi, Professor? I'm not sure I can do much with a fire extinguisher today." He held up his cast as way of explanation.
