Constantine Presents: Virtues & Vices - Thursday, Period 1. [8/13]
The blackboard read Diligentia (Diligence) versus Acedia (Sloth) as everyone arrived today, to a tired-looking Constantine slumped at his desk.
This academic shite was not fun.
"When we hear the word diligent, most of us think of the modern definition: hard-working or persistent. Proper attention and preparation, executed in a timely, efficient, and effective manner consistently. Diligence is active, and does not cease. Of course, that means most people think of sloth as laziness, but that's not all there is to it. Sloth is a lack of engagement. It's failing to commit to productive action."
"Think of it like a gardener -- a diligent one does research on what grows locally, preps the soil, plants seeds, weeds, waters, and, in theory, reaps the spoils. A slothful gardener maybe puts in some seeds or plants, waters when they remember, and in the end have more weeds than anything else."
"So, why pair diligence and sloth?" He asked, gesturing at the board. "--and if diligence is the middle road of virtue, what is the far extreme?"
"Personally, I view the entire fucking hustle-culture of workaholism as contrary to actual diligence, but that's just me." John gestured toward the class. "Discuss."
