Computers & Fun #4 6/14 Wednesday Afternoon - Computer Lab

The computer lab is set up like an office today, the seats moved apart so each student has their own cube-shaped area. Abby is sitting up front, her usual white labcoat traded for a oversized men's suit jacket.

"Good afternoon my worker bees! Today we're going to be learning the two most important things office workers need to know. How to use offline computer programs like word processing and how to hide the fun stuff from their bosses." Abby ran through a quick description of programs like Word, Excel, notepad and their mac counterparts that the mun doesn't care about because her soul belongs to Bill Gates..

"Of course then you have the fun stuff. Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, Freecell, Minesweeper and my personal favorite..." Abby leaned forward and grinned, "Paintbrush! There's just something about making really crappy pictures with a limited color choices that speaks to my soul." She flipped her laptop around to show a couple of her own pictures. "This first one here is my old boss, if he decided to turn goth. This one is a duck." Abby shrugged. "I like ducks."

"So it's 3:00 on a Friday afternoon. You've got two hours before you can clock out and nothing left to do. You need to pick one of the fun activities to play around with but beware of the boss. If he catches you goofing off you might get fired." Abby straightened her jacket and nodded to them. "In order to not get caught you need to work on being sneaky. Alt-tab will get you to another window quickly, hitting minimize with your mouse, or the ever popular turning your screen off and pretending to be reading a report. Come up with a way to get back to your work screen and try not to get caught, and those of you who make it through class without letting me see your fun program get a prize!" Abby held up a box of caffeine-laced candy.

"Oh and I almost forgot! The school is having an art fair on Friday. So if any of you want to use this time to make an art project in paint...I think that would be cool." She grinned and shook the box of candy. "So cool that you might even get two packages of the awesome candy."

Conner opted for Minesweeper. Card games involved more strategy than he cared to deal with, when it didn't involve him out on the field, and his version of Minesweeper strongly resembled a game of Russian Roulette with a 500-round (square?) revolver.

Still, maybe it was the adrenaline junkie in him that had him glued to the screen for his repeated haphazard rounds of "click until I go boom." It wouldn't have been hard to sneak up on him at all.

Conner was too caught up in trying to see how much longer his random clicks could avoid cataclysmic explosion to realize right away that Abby was coming up behind him.

He tried to Alt-Tab back over to the work screen, but hit the Windows key instead, which only brought his Start Menu up for half a second. When that failed, he attempted to go for the minimize button . . . but he never was that good with a touchpad.

Bridge opens paint and starts drawing something that looks suspiciously like five people in brightly-coloured costumes.

It's totally not cheating if one happens to be psychic and thus has a bit of an early-warning system when it comes to people who might try and sneak up on him.

Bridge alt-tabs and his Paint masterpiece is replaced by a complicated-looking Excel spreadsheet.

Sam was a big fan of Spider Solitaire, so he went straight for that.

Sam had his non-mouse using hand on the Alt+Tab keys, so at the first sign of noise, he switched screens back to Microsoft Excel. Ooh, shiny spreadsheet!

Zack shrugged and started up a game of solitaire.

Zack heard the clinking and quickly flicked over to a wordfile filled with scientific gibberish.

Willow was actually being super sneaky in that not only was she pretending to do non-worky things at work, but she was actually skipping the part about playing Solitaire and the like and was instead going online to continue her research into ways to fix the screwed-up spell with Alec and Dean.

Re: Super Sneaky!

Oh sure, she could try. But Willow has had her sneaky research-fu honed by years of dealing with folks like Giles, who could out-quiet the sound of one hand clapping in a forest with nobody around to hear it.

Also she was cheating in class which upped her nerve levels.

A quick click of her panic button and she had a fake PowerPoint presentation on her screen. It was about office supply useage.

Peter went for a big non-sneaky game: Pinball. That would be require his blatantly goofing off. If he could do this, he would be happy.

Too bad he sucked at computer pinball.

Even with only one good arm, Peter was fast enough move his hand back to the mouse and pull up the Word document he had minimized.

Unfortunately, he didn't do so until Abby was right behind him. Woe.

John held up his hand and tried to get the professor's attention. "Professor? This keyboard's not the greatest. Can I use my left-handed one instead? I need to install some software to get it working right, though."

JOhn grinned. He installed (http://www.opera.com/) some (http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/) software (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/) and started surfing the web (http://www.fark.com) for porn after the keyboard everything was properly configured.

All in all, it took about 10 minutes. "Professor? I'm ready."

Attempts to be sneaky but... really got no idea what things he can do with his computer that's goofing off. He stares at the desktop blankly.

He does try it and he doodles a squiggly looking dinosaur and attempts a nervous grin at her after he finishes. "Like that?"
