First Aid, Tuesday Morning, 6/13

Elliot looked slightly preoccupied as the students filed in, but she managed a smile.

"Hi! Okay, we were supposed to cover the nervous system today, but can I say one thing first? I helped out a little on Saturday, and I wasn't expecting to see you guys needing to put this stuff into practice so soon. If you ever need a doctor, want a doctor, can't get to the clinic, call me or come by my apartment. No questions asked. You were just lucky you didn't get hurt worse, and that Vice Principal Pierce and I were around. And if you have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, ignore this whole shpiel.

Anyhow. The nervous system is kind of the control center of your body. It's your brain, your spinal cord, and all the nerves that run through your body. The important things to worry about are fainting or concussion, seizure -- fits -- and head injury.

Let's start with unconsciousness. It's not the same thing as being asleep or the same thing as being drunk. It means someone is gone -- they can't respond to anyone or anything around them. This handout gives a pretty good overview of what to do with someone who's like that. Mostly, you want to call 911 if possible and keep them warm and breathing until they come around. Also, if you see someone about to faint? Don't just stand there and yell "TIMBER," even though it's funny. Try to stop them from falling and put their feet up.

Seizures can occur for a lot of reasons, but one of the more common ones is epilepsy.Seizures will end, almost always, and they almost never kill someone. The big thing to do is to keep the person from hurting themselves. Be calm, stand back, put something soft under their head if you can, and do not mess around with sticking something in their mouths, they can choke.

Last thing, head injury. This handout has a pretty good checklist on when to call in a doctor. If you don't need one, just put ice on the bruise and watch the person in case they get worse. And remember, better you waste a few hours in the emergency room for nothing than you don't get treatment if you need it.

Got it? Okay. We have fake patients over in that corner. Some will have seizures, some are unconscious, some have just hit their heads on something. You lucky people get to give them first aid. Work alone or in pairs, and ask me if you need guidance.

And when you've done that, we get a little arts and crafts time. There's an art fair on campus on Friday, and I would hate for you guys to get left out. So there are some samples of first aid and health class posters over on that wall, and a bunch of supplies on the table -- posterboard, markers, paint, collage stuff, whatever. I am seriously looking forward to seeing what you guys will come up with. I know we haven't covered the general health class stuff in here, but 15 posters about the Heimlich maneuver might be a tiny bit excessive. Just check with me if you aren't sure about a message.

Got it? Let's go for it."

Parker was... a little less well-dressed than usual. For one thing? The black T-shirt she was wearing was too big. If you heard the radio, you can probably figure out why she's in such a good mood.

Peter grinned at Parker. "So you've not decided to continue with the uniforms, your Majesty?"

Parker cocked an eyebrow. "Couture is not a uniform! And... This is what was in the closet, this morning."

"I was referring to the uniform in detention," Peter replied, laughing. "But I'll take your word for the contents of your closet."

Parker turned bright red, then rolled her eyes. "The shirt got-- damaged. So, T-shirt. And that skirt was too short for even *my* comfort."

Peter made a mental note that it was possible to make Parker blush and grinned. "I suppose the lack of comfort was all part of the detention. Are those two girls mad or just very, very strange?"

Looking like something the proverbial cat had drug in, Seras made her way over to Elliot. Do doctors have cures for something that may or may not be a hang over?

"I don't feel so good. It's like I've got a hangover. Just like one. Only I don't remember drinking anything."

"Hurt...hurt me?"

Seras was silent a moment before Dr. Reid's meaning pierced through her foggy, headachey feelings.

"I...I don't think anyone could have. I woke up in my room..."

Isabel sat to the side to listen to the lecture, a small red fox curled up at her feet.

"It's Jack Harkness," Isabel explained. "I don't know what he did, but he's furry and lacking thumbs for the time being. So I've been keeping an eye on him."

"We haven't had anyone stay furry yet," Isabel replied. "So I'm hoping it will wear off soon. He's cute and cuddly like this, but it's still not the same."

"Doctor Reid?" Peter asked, walking up. "Thanks for helping out the other night."

"Define 'too often,'" Peter requested. "There's generally some sort of thing like this every month or two. My first month here ended with evil snowmen."

"And, yep, the clinic was very helpful. I didn't get there until the next morning, though."

"It was the first bit of weirdness a lot of us experienced," Peter said. "It's a fond memory. Kind of."

"And I'm glad to hear that. The clinic was telling me I'd probably be able to get this off in about four weeks. Could be worse, I guess."
