Archery Workshop #4, 6/13, Danger Shop, Afternoon

The setup should be starting to look kind of familiar to the students by now. Grass, sun, bows, arrows, targets. However, this week, the targets are somewhat smaller than they were the week before. Not absurdly small, just smaller.

Miho is sitting in a lounge chair under a shade umbrella, where she can watch all of her students, hopefully without getting shot. The sign-in sheet is on a card table next to her, along with a plate of doughnuts and a pitcher of somewhat sour lemonade with a stack of plastic cups.

On the portable blackboard is this message to the students: Shoot things. Not each other. Good luck! with a big smiley face drawn under it.

The ninja is in a disturbingly good mood, it would seem.

Janet ignored the sulking and glaring entirely as she walked up to the red and black-skinned student. "Are you a transfer student?" she asked. "I'd recall if I'd seen you before."

"I'm Bel," he said flatly. "This is my demon form."

"Oh, hey, Bel," said Janet, studying him, her eyes slightly narrowed as the catalogued the physiological differences. "You get taller, your melanin alters, and your ears elongate--probably via the same mechanism that increases your height. Actually, that's rather fascinating. I'd guess that even the structure of your vocal chords has shifted slightly."

"I guess so," Bel said, his voice deeper than usual. He eyed Janet warily, as if half-expecting her to drag him to the clinic for dissection.

Janet shook her head, bemused. "I'm not going to take you to the clinic and give you an MRI, I promise," she said. "I just think it's interesting that you look so different. I'd guess most people from your dimension think that's an intimidating look?"

"Yeah," Bel said. "You don't think I look scary?"

It's a sad thing to see a demon pout.

Janet shook her head. "I hate to break it to you, Bel, but I don't think all that much is scary any more. Don't take it personally."

It was also a funny thing to see a damon pout. Janet bit her lip and tried to hide a smile. "I also know you're a good person and there's no need for me to be scared of you," she added, reaching out to pat him comfortingly on the arm.

"Thanks," Bel sighed. "I just wish I knew why I was stuck like this. Usually it's no problem at all to go between forms."

"Do you think it's a physiological problem, or a mystical one?" asked Janet, frowning in puzzlement. "You might want to go to the clinic, just in case it's physiological. At the very least, you could eliminate it as a concern."

"That might be a good idea," Bel said. He raised a hand to run it through his hair, only he didn't have hair now, so there went that idea. "I just hope whoever is around knows something about demons."

Janet smiled in sympathy at the aborted gesture. "I don't know. Maybe Granny Weatherwax?" She was weird. "We don't have demons in my universe, but I'm pretty used to dealing with the unusual, so if you can't find anyone else, I can run a few tests. If you want. I didn't do so badly with Angel, after all."

"Thanks," Bel said. "I appreciate that. I'll keep that in mind if this doesn't go away on its own. I just hope it's temporary."

"Just call me," said Janet. "I can show up at the clinic any time, it doesn't have to be when I'm on duty there. And I hope the problem resolves itself on its own."
