Book Fair

Giles had gotten up at ack o'clock and actually had toted five boxes of books to the Fandom High Gym before he "cheated."

Everything was now set up neatly on tables, and separated by genre.

There was also coffee and hot water urns, bottled water, and a variety of pastries and breads set on a table near the register.

The First Annual Fandom High Book Fair was open for business.

[ooc: Hang on to your collective hats while I get the OCD threads up, please.

Threads are UP. Whew. I think you all know how this works. Go look for a book. Up to you whether you find it or not. No, there is no magic/new age section. Yes, Giles has planned it that way.

That's it! Go to town! Wait. No. Stay here and buy stuff...]

"Most definitely," Peter replied. "I've found several interesting ones. And yourself?"

"A few," she nods, with a bit of a shy smile. "It's still difficult for me to really read well in English, but there's a few that caught my eye."

"How long have you been reading English," Peter asked. "Your spoken language is very good."

"Speaking it is easy," she says with a smile and a wave of her hand. "English is so popular in Japan as a spoken language that you pick up a lot in that respect. Writing and reading it is entirely different, though, and I've only been working on that part for about a year. So I struggle a lot."

"Is it popular in Japan?" Peter asked curiously. "That seems odd to me. I've only ever learned languages the other way - learning to read and write first, then speaking. I'd think the other way would be very difficult."

"Oh, you're actually required to learn English in high school, if you want to continue on to the university level," she explains, "but even before the formal training, popular culture is so saturated with English phrases and words. It's a trend, like fashion, or something."

Peter nodded. "I must ask you to forgive me, Lady. I come from 1940. The last I knew, Japan was close to an enemy to Britain and America. It's just very strange to think of English as a fashion there."

Her eyes widen for a moment. That's right! The time thing! She smiles.

"I must ask you to forgive me, then. I forgot about that. In a nutshell, the Allies won, Japan became obsessed with American culture. Although, really, that started well before then, back in the nineteenth century. The time you're from was sort of our...resentment period, I suppose you could say."
