Book Fair

Giles had gotten up at ack o'clock and actually had toted five boxes of books to the Fandom High Gym before he "cheated."

Everything was now set up neatly on tables, and separated by genre.

There was also coffee and hot water urns, bottled water, and a variety of pastries and breads set on a table near the register.

The First Annual Fandom High Book Fair was open for business.

[ooc: Hang on to your collective hats while I get the OCD threads up, please.

Threads are UP. Whew. I think you all know how this works. Go look for a book. Up to you whether you find it or not. No, there is no magic/new age section. Yes, Giles has planned it that way.

That's it! Go to town! Wait. No. Stay here and buy stuff...]

"Hey, Tempe," Elizabeth smiled across at her as she balanced her books whilst grabbing a coffee and a brownie. She grinned at the kitties. "I see you've made some new friends."

"Hey, Elizabeth," Tempe said, taking a sip of her water and breaking up the sandwich for the kitties. "I haven't seen you for awhile. Everything going okay?"

Tempe placed the plate with the sandwich on the floor, and watched as the kitties all raced for it, some tripping over each other or their own four feet, and landing in a heap.

"Oh yes. These guys won't stop following me around. And Silver Fox and Goldilocks," she said, indicating the grey-furred kitty on her right shoulder and the golden-furred kitty on her left shoulder, respectively. "Seem even more intent on never leaving me alone."

She demonstrated by attempting to pick Goldilocks off her shoulder by the scruff of her neck. The weetiny kitty clung.

"Yeah, not too bad. Went to see some friends who were back in the country at the weekend and then I've mostly been reading and writing this week," Elizabeth explained. "How's things been with you?"

She giggled, and reached out to pet the nearest kitten. "They're very cute. The kittens have mostly been leaving me alone; do you think they can tell I'm a dog-person or something?!"

"Pretty good," Tempe replied. "Lots of reading and writing for me as well. A couple of basketball practices, one marathon cookie-baking session, and I've made some new friends. Though I have a feeling that most of that can be attributed to the cookies."

The black and white weetiny kitty leaned into the hand that was petting him. Yep, he could sense that she didn't like weetiny kitties as much as she probably liked weetiny puppies, but he figured if he acted cute enough, she might change her mind.

"You're lucky, actually," Tempe said. "At least they've left you alone and haven't tried to smother you in your sleep."

Elizabeth grinned. "Baked goods always go down well around here. It's amazing how quickly and how many people appear when there's food on offer," she said. "How are the basketball practices going? I only went to watch the cheerleading one!"

That is exactly how my dogs behave

Elizabeth tried not to laugh. "No, that is definitely one advantage," she agreed. "Do you need to kitty-proof your bed or something?"

"So I've noticed," Tempe said, grinning. "I also noticed that it tends to be the guys that show up at the mention of baked goods. Really nice guys, especially if they're angling for cookies. Who knows whether they're that nice normally."

"Basketball practice...isn't really my thing," Tempe replied. "I'm okay at it, but I don't like team sports very much. Parker kind of made me join, under the guise of female solidarity. I haven't seen her since."

Mine too! It's like 'What? This is a cat person? Let me sniff and lick them and try to jump on them. That'll change their mind.' It would help if she wasn't the size of a small horse.

"How does one kitty-proof a bed?" Tempe asked, genuinely curious. "Because I think I might actually need to look into that."

"All the guys I know are actually nice," Elizabeth said, nodding. "All the girls I know too really."

She smiled sympathetically. "Parker's very persuasive, isn't she? Still, it could have been worse. Janet was press-ganged into being a cheerleader and she's not happy about that." From the look on Elizabeth's face, she was enjoying it however.

Aww, bless. Ours are much smaller thankfully. And they sometimes think they're cats. The little one does the whole "Puss in Boots" look from Shrek 2 with the big eyes and the ears back!

"Mosquito netting?" Elizabeth suggested, slightly doubtfully.

Tempe nodded. "I've only really met one incredibly unpleasant person so far at this school. It just doesn't seem to be the norm for people to be mean here. Thank goodness."

"Oh, she definitely is. And I heard about Janet being forced to be a cheerleader. The poor thing. Something about someone named Callisto abusing her authority," Tempe replied.

Aww! Ours just really has the puppy-dog eyes thing down really well. What can I say, it's cute. ^_^

"Hmm. Mosquito netting. Nah, not unless I was going to bundle up the weetiny kitties in it and haul it out the door to get rid of them. But I think PETA and the SPCA might have something to say about that."

"We are a nice bunch. Honestly," Elizabeth nodded, taking a mouthful of coffee.

Elizabeth just giggled. "Something along those lines. She makes a cute cheerleader though!"

Awww. Dogs are cute!

"Hmm, probably," Elizabeth nodded. "It's not that fun to sleep under anyway, especially if you move around in your sleep."

"So I've noticed," Tempe replied, breaking her muffin in half and then in quarters, and then eating a piece. "You're also a very accepting bunch as well."

Tempe couldn't help but giggle as well. "I'll bet she does."

Tempe shuddered at the thought of sleeping under mosquito netting. "I'd probably get all tangled in it. I already have a habit of doing it with my blankets. I'd probably yank it down in the middle of the night and accidentally bind my arms and legs in it."

She shook out an arm. All this talking about being bound and tangled was making her feel a little bit closed in.

Elizabeth nodded. "It's one of the things that's so great about this place. I just wish we could bottle what it is that makes it so accepting," she said, grinning slightly ruefully.

"I have photos," Elizabeth nodded, grinning broadly. "She'll kill me when she finds out how many!"

"I yanked it down the first couple of nights," Elizabeth admitted. "But if it's a choice of netting or mosquitos using you as an all-night, all-they-can-suck buffet? Netting wins hands down!"

"Yeah, and then sell it over the world," Tempe replied. "Actually, no, forget selling it. We could just give it away. Maybe then people would be more inclined to consume it and stop starting wars."

"Oh, these are photos I have to see!" Tempe said, giggling.

"That reminds me. I have a scrapbook I'm supposed to be doing for Arts & Crafts, and I need some pictures of people I've met. Mind if I take a picture of you?" Tempe asked, reaching into her bag to pull out her new disposable camera.

"Hmm. Tough choice. You're right, though. It would probably be better just to drown in netting."

"Oh absolutely give it away," Elizabeth nodded. "Stick it in the water supplies and actually have peace."

"I'll develop them in my photography workshop next Wednesday," Elizabeth said, still grinning. "So, I'll probably have them on me that afternoon."

"Oh, okay, sure," Elizabeth said, putting down her coffee.

She nodded. "Eventually you get used to it."

"Water supply! That's even better!" Tempe exclaimed. "We'd just have to get people who are really good at sneaking into places to do it. Because I think some of the world's drinking water reservoirs are pretty heavily protected."

"Oh good. I'll have to come and find you next Wednesday though," Tempe said. "Um, what room are you in? That might make it a little easier to track you down."

Tempe snapped a few pictures of Elizabeth, put the camera back in her bag and grinned. "Thanks. Now at least I'll have pictures of one person in my otherwise Fandom-scenery-filled scrapbook."
