Dealing With Other People's Trauma, Tuesday 11/11, 3rd period
“Today is a holiday, here,” Stark said. “Not a festive one but one to remember. For veterans. People who have been in the military. Maybe ones who have been in wars. Seen fighting. Seen dying. Seen things that do not leave you, even with time.”
“I know something of that. Not the military. I was never a soldier. But I was in battles and wars and I’ve seen so much suffering at those times and after those times were over, or at least stopped.”
Stark paused for a moment to look around. “Sometimes…sometimes soldiers, or anyone who was harmed by a war, and everyone does get harmed when there is a war affecting them…sometimes it’s a specific sort of trauma that affects those people. From the death or the pain or the fear or all of it. Sometimes from doing things they wish they had never had to do. Things that are regretted. Things that are repressed.”
“I don’t know if any of you have been soldiers or have seen war. I don’t need to know. You don’t need to say but you can if you like. You never have to talk but you can always choose to, with me, here. So…we could talk without mentioning anything of yourselves, if you like. Just hypotheticals. Or whatever you like. But we should talk of ways trauma from war might be different from other traumas. Or the same. Let’s just…discuss that.”
Or not. He was not going to force anyone to speak. That would be absurd.
“Or I can talk about things I’ve seen. Soldiers I’ve known. Others.”
