Campfire Stories & Songs #3, 06/06/06, Main Campfire, Evening

Lyta Alexander (Week 7 - July 4)
Pip Bernadette (??)
Hamlet Dane Jr (Week 5 - June 20)
Demyx (Week 7 - July 4)
Timothy Desmond (Week 3 - June 6, today!)
Walter Dornez (done!)
Jude Lizowski (Week 5 - June 20)
Greg Sanders (Week 6 - June 27)
Nadia Santos (Week 4 - June 13)

"Evening, dudes!" Ted greeted cheerily. There was a feast of marshmallows, smores and various other junk food, as well as some grilled fish on the fire. It was nearly ready. "Seeing as though today's 06/06/06, the most non-triumphant number ever and Satan's personal favorite, I'm not gonna tell you a scary story. If you want one of those, watch Jerry Springer, dudes. Those are some scary people. Instead, I'm gonna tell you a fairy tale!"

Ted cleared his throat and set the scene. "Once upon a time there was a babe named Rorpunzel. She was totally hot, and had way long hair. She was locked in this tower by this most heinous dude named, uh, Cr...Blighton. Blighton had a moustache and twirled it a lot like a bad dude. So every day, Rorpunzel would be all 'Liek woe' and she'd read a lot and totally get emo because she didn't have a dude to keep her company and tell her her hair was pretty.

Then one day, there was this other dude, uh, Dane who came along and yelled up to her. 'Hey, Rorpunzel dudette! Throw down your hair and we can totally be emo together!' But she whined that her hair would get dirty, so he promised to get a blanket so it wouldn't get dirty, and then he promised coffee, so she threw her hair down and he climbed up it and they were emo together.

But then a tank knocked over the tower that Rorpunzel was in and they had to get out. So then this Mountie came along and offered to take them to safety, and they totally went, but along the way they ran into a group of ninjas! So the ninjas kidnapped Rorpunzel and Dane was totally emo again, and then Dane and the Mountie went back to Rorpunzel's home town to get help. And they were lucky 'cause a pirate ship was in town and the pirates were totally into fighting the ninjas. And then some cowboys came along and THEY wanted to help and then a ship full of monkeys came as well, and then robots landed and it was THE BEST THING EVER.

Uh, so they went and saved Rorpunzel and lived happily ever after. THE END. Your turn, Faerie-Tale Dude."

[OOC: Story this time is weeeeak. Inspiration, where are you?]

Nadia signed in. She also signed Pip in, since he was, you know, still a goose.

[ooc: Pip-mun is still offline for the time being, but we can probably see about figuring out when he'd be able to tell a story?]

Walter was... agog.

Professor Ted didn't need Empire brownies; he was the living embodiment of Empire brownies.

Nadia leaned over to Walter. "I don't get it? Where did the pirates and ninjas come from?"

"The same place the monkeys did?" Walter shrugged. "It's very Dada. Artie would be proud."

Nadia shook her head. "I still don't get it. What is Dada, again?"

"I'm still trying to figure that out. I think it's about being as absurd as you can be and embracing that." Which reminded him that he had Dada homework to do. Tomorrow would be a good day for that.

"Then Professor Ted is very Dada, I think."

"Is it any more or less Dada than showing up to this workshop with our friend, the goose?" The goose who was going to have to be elsewhere when Walter and Nadia had their date.

Pip honked.

"More. This is just Fandom weirdness." Nadia reached up to scritch between Pip's wings. "At least it isn't his turn to tell a story."

Tim grinned. That would be one hell of a fight.

Hamlet listens enraptured to Ted's story. Something about this week's tale holds his interest so much more than the last two.

Re: Tim's story (and during Tim's story)

[identity profile] grand-fallguy.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Tim sat for a moment, marshmallow spitted on the stick laying across his lap, staring into the heart of the fire.

"A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away a little after the beginning, before mankind knew what caused thunder, lightening, night and day, hell, before they even had words to describe them, light was all important.

"They didn't have gods yet." he said. "They couldn't. Couldn't see what made the twig snap, what made the leasves rustle. Anything could be out there." He held the marshmallow in the fire and let it catch. "Fire was a source of light." he said. "Light, warmth, and security. But it could be treacherous. It had to be handled with respect, cautioun, or it could turn on you. Fire was powerfull, but fragile. It had to be fed, cared for. It was a living thing. A living thing that they didn't know whence it came.

"It was dark. Darker than usual because of the storm clouds blotting out the lights in the sky. It was cold, and wet. Thunder crashed threateningly and lightening split the air like a blade. Anything it touched was destroyed. So they huddled, we huddled in the meager shelter provided by the stone overhang."

From the tone of his voice, and the look in his eyes, one might almost get the sense that Tim had been there, experienced it first hand.

"But one of us wasn't there. One of our group was out there," he gestured off into the darkness beyond the light of the fire. "Braving the storm and the dark, to find what the lightening left behind. And when she returned, our relief was doubled because she's safe. And because she has brought fire."

Tim paused for a moment. His mouth was dry and he took a sip from his water.

"It was small, but strong. A burning branch from a tree struck by the lightening. She laid it on the offering we'd gathered, a nest of twigs, leaves and grass and we gathered around it. We gathered for warmth but also to shelter it from the wind. And then, carefully, we feed it."

With that, he broke his stick into smaller pieces and one by one, lightly tossed them into the fire.

"The fire grew strong, and in it's gratitude it warmed us and drove away the dark. And as we fed it, cared for it, and recieved it's gifts in return, we thought about it. What is this thing? Where does it come from? Why it it here? What is it thinking?"

He stared intently into the fire. "I don't know if it was born of the fire, or if the fire was a gateway, but something happened that night. Something came out of the fire. Small, furry, pawed, scared.

"But the one who brought the fire crept closer, holding food out to it. It took her gift and vanished back into the fire. But that wasn't the last we saw of it. It came back, more and more often and the more we fed and cared for it, like the fire, it helped us. Cared for us. Cleaning, cooking, making clothes, or simply giving us company or something to talk about. We started a relationship that night that has lasted for millenia. And as time went on, we learned their names. Bannik, Brownie, Luchorpan, Hobgoblin, Beansidhe, Lutin, Elves, Gnomes, Pixies. We met the Fae that night. And neither race was ever the same again."

Nadia listened quietly during Tim's story, trying to imagine what it was like for people before they understood fire.

She definitely got the feeling he knew what he was talking about.

Jude jumped in.

"Gremlins go marching two by two, hoorah! Hoorah!
The gremlins go marching two by two, hoorah! Hoorah!
The gremlins go marching two by two, the little one stopped 'cause Izzy turned his hair blue
And they all went marching down to the school to get out of the rain!"

The Gremlins go marching three by three hurrah, hurrah

The gremlins go marching three by three, the little one stops to turn into a tree,

The gremlins go marching four by four, the little one stops to scrapbook on the floor,
And they all go marching down, to the school, to get out of the pudding."

tim couldn't think of anything else fandom related, but this verse had been in his head sometimes only with ants stead of gremlins:

The gremlins go marching five by five, hurrah, hurrah.
The Gremlins go marching five by five hurrach, hurrah!
The gremlins go marching five by five, the little one stops for,
Stayin' Alive, Stayin Alive!
And the all go marching down, to the school, to get out of the rain.
