"It's a beautiful, sunny day in Connecticut," Ghanima said cheerfully once everyone had arrived, Trebor eagerly wiggling next to her. "A little warm, perhaps, for apple picking, but better we go now, than wait for the weather to turn and lose the chance."

"Today we're heading out to Lyman Orchards. Started in 1741 on thirty-seven acres, the orchard is not just known for their fruits... they were heavily involved in the Underground Railroad and vocal opponents of slavery. While they are renowned for their apples, it's also the correct season for peaches, pears, pumpkins, and, should you feel adventurous, the corn maze is currently available."

"Today, the farm spans almost 1200 acres, and it is considered a star attraction in the area."

The portal blinked into existence, and Ghanima picked up Trebor. "Let's go!"

Quinn wasn't doing the best job of listening. Orchards weren't corn fields, but . . . they weren't totally dissimilar to corn fields.

So there might be a bit of . . . tension. Over here.

As everyone stepped through the portal, Ghanima set Trebor down (but kept a firm grip on his hand). "As usual, we have a time-locked portal, so you do not have to worry about watching the time," she announced, smiling, even as her co-teacher clearly wanted to run for the trees. "We will all be going on the educational Apple 'Pick Your Own Cider/Donut & Orchard Tour,' but after that, your time is your own."

A guided farm tour, where you can also learn about cider-making or donuts. Chose your adventure!

This actually sounded informative and interesting, so Jon was happy!

After you've loaded up on apples, feel free to grab more baskets and pick anything that's reasonably still in season. Ghanima is running a tab, and she will cover your purchases.

Nell was absolutely going to take advantage of the fresh fruits that she didn't have at Soulwood, but then she was going to find a quiet spot and commune with the land. This place was beautiful.

Okay, so the apples were the obvious pick but nobody had told her that a) Connecticut could grown peaches, and b) that they basically fell off the fucking branches come harvest time.

Oh no.

Oh no, there was actual corn.

Was an option for her own adventure hanging out as far away from the corn as possible? Because Quinn was absolutely hanging out as far from the corn as possible.

And maybe considering arson.

Jon wouldn't mind getting a couple apples and pears. (He might even remember to eat them later.)

He was staying away from that corn maze, though. Mazes and he didn't get along.

Personally, Ghanima is relatively sure all the horror movies tell you not to go into the four acre corn maze, but for those of you that like that sort of thing, it is available.

Under most circumstances, Arden was far too smart to enter a corn maze of her own volition. She had seen even a single horror movie and, you know, Black girls didn't do too well in those, historically speaking.

But when your brother is determined to go into a corn maze and you know that at some point, he will absolutely fall asleep while in there, you did what you had to do.

"It's gonna be fun!" Gray, hopped up on sugar from apple cider donuts and bound to crash sooner rather than later, insisted.

"I'm gonna be murdered," Arden said with a sigh. "By whatever weird, eldritch monstrosity was awakened by the corn maze." She took another bite of her apple cider donut. "At least I'll die with a belly full of deliciousness."

"No, you won't," Gray told her. "I'll protect you!" He was a deadly warrior, Arden. Sure, he didn't have his sword or anything, but it would be fine.

"We should bring some donuts back to Raiden." You know. If any survived that long.

"If we survive, we can celebrate by bringing more donuts back to Raiden," Arden said, since this bag certainly wasn't going to last. "Also, you're gay. You and I are both in line for getting murdered first."

"Pffft," Gray said. "I'm really hard to kill. Just stay behind me." As they ventured further into this maze where surely nothing could go wrong. "Besides, are you a virgin? Don't answer that. Ew." He'd have to get worried about whether Cal was secretly a eunuch again. "But the virgin always survives the horror movie. Trust me, I'm an expert." Little-known fact! "Oooh, we should watch horror movies sometime! It's almost October, and it's fun to watch with Ray. He gets really scared." Gray, that was mean.

"I wasn't going to answer that!" Arden sputtered. In no small part because she didn't want Gray thinking Cal was a eunuch again. That first run through of that had been embarrassing enough, thank you. "Oh no. Ray getting scared of horror flicks sounds adorable."

"It is," Gray confirmed. "Plus he'll make us snacks, duh." If Raiden ever didn't make snacks the situation was in some way dire.

Raiden would cater the apocalypse.

"But how many of those snacks will we get if horror movies make him stress eat?"

"That's why you have to guard your snacks...and eat them fast." That part was important.

They're around all day!

I want to go pick apples.
