Gun Club (6/03), around 3pm

Parker walks up to the dorms, and opens the Gun Club around 3pm.

SAFETY RULES:

· TREAT ALL GUNS AS IF THEY WERE LOADED

· KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO FIRE

· BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT’S BEYOND

· ALWAYS WEAR HEARING AND EYE PROTECTION

· NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILE SHOOTING.

· CHECK IN ALL WEAPONS BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE RANGE.

Breaking any of these rules means an immediate visit with Principal Washburn or Constable Fraser. And not in any kind of fun way.

It had been a slow day at the store, and as she still suffered from the after effects of ~~getting slitzed~~ praising Freyr, Seras decided to close up shop early and head back to the cabins.

Passing by the dorms, she noticed that the Gun Club was open and decided to check it out.

"Can anyone come in?" she asked, "Or is it members only?"

Parker tilted her eye protection up, and cocked her head. "Seras, right? Anyone who wants to join can come in. It's not like we ask you to pay dues." She nodded over to the display case. "Target pistols are over there. You shoot?"

Seras nodded her thanks and moved to examine the pistols in the display case.

"No, I don't," she said, "But, I'm here to learn."

Parker paused. "Okay, then I have to walk you through the basics before I let you take one. Do you have some time?"

Seras nodded.

"Yes, I do. And, thanks, by the way."

"No problem. Part of my job as Club rep." Parker took down ear protection, eye protection, and a 9mm. "Never use your gun in here without these. The area has baffling and auditory muffling, but it's still too loud without the earmuffs. The eye protection is tinted so you can see better, and it's also to protect from any blow-back. Make sense?"

Seras slipped on and adjusted the earmuffs and eye protection.

"So far, so good."

"Good." Parker showed her a shooting stance. "Use both hands to hold the gun. One-handed is for circus artists with reinforced wrists. The average gun weighs too much and has too much kick for anything less than both hands. The one not holding the gun comes underneath to support your hand. See? Now you try." Parker handed Seras the unloaded gun. "On a 9mm, you squeeze the trigger, not jerk it." She cocked her head. "Why are you interested in learning, by the way?"

Seras took the 9mm and did her best to immitate the grip that Parker had shown her.

"I'm going to be a cop," she said simply, trying to figure out just how she felt about actually having one of these things in her hands.

Parker cocked an eyebrow, then nodded. "Good to know about these up front, then." She showed Seras the ammon, then loaded it into her own weapon. "Pretty standard, you're not going to find a lot of variation, but be sure to get an expert to show you on any new model." She nodded toward the rules. "Keep those in mind. We've got a couple people with some odd guns, and some odd aiming abilities. But the basics still apply. Here, you load it."

Seras took the ammo and loaded it into the gun, despite the fact that she felt her palms begin to sweat. She took her time, trying her best to stay relaxed.

She told herself that it was only an object, not a threat by any means, and that she was the one in control of it. It helped. A little.

"Odd guns and aiming abilities?" she asked by way of having a bit of a distraction. Plus, it would probably be good to learn these things.

Parker watched her carefully, then took the gun, unloaded it, and said, "Good, but try it again. Wait until you're comfortable with it."

"Aeryn Sun has a pulse rifle-- the odd teflon targets over there are hers. Don't shoot at them, it'll just cause a ricochet." She nodded toward Pippi. "And Pippi's gunsights are... unique. Do *not* get into her alley. She might look like she's aiming wrong, but she usually hits what she wants to. Make sense?"

Seras nodded, took a breath, and tried loading the thing again.

It went a bit easier this time.

"Most things about Pippi are unique," said Seras, glancing at over at her, "Like...er...she seems to have grown cat's ears."

Seras was surprised. She couldn't wait to hear about *this* one.

Parker looked resigned. "Yes, I noticed earlier, at cheerleading practice. I just hope it wears off soon. Then again, maybe she likes it?" She sighed, then nodded her head at Seras' loading of the gun.

"Better. Guns are tools, but they're very dangerous tools. As long as you respect them and handle them properly, they don't have to become a problem." She nodded toward the target at the end of the alley. "Aim, but don't shoot yet. Just get used to it."

Seras reflected for a moment and then decided that she wouldn't put liking cat ears enough to grow a pair as an accessory past Pippi.

She bit her lip, then squared her shoulders and nodded. She glanced at the rules on the wall once more to make certain not to break any. Then she stood, somewhat awkwardly, aiming the gun, gripping it as Parker had shown her.

Parker took a second to correct her stance. "Shoulders square. Don't stiffen up your arms like that, you don't want the recoil going all the way up to your neck. That's better. Ready?"

Seras nodded and took a moment to adopt the stance Parker described.

She had some idea that she ought to be sighting along the gun's barrel, so she tried to do that.

Parker checked, and Seras was sighting correctly. "Good. Aim for the center of the target, but don't worry if you don't hit it. It takes a while to get used to the gun."

She'd done that right? Seras felt a stab of pleasure, despite her nervousness.

She licked her lips and sighted once more, aiming for the bullseye. Remembering Parker's advice, she slowly squeezed the trigger.

Her wrists jerked from the kick back, but it was the sound that got to her. Supressing a shudder she closed her eyes and took another deep breath. She opened her eyes to see how she'd done.

She hadn't hit the target's centre. Not even close, really. But, she had managed to hit the target itself.

"Good. You hit it, and didn't do anything stupid, like drop the gun." Parker smiled wryly. "Which hasn't happened here, but I'm waiting for it." She studied Seras carefully. "You okay to keep going? You look a little shaken up."

Seras nodded. Shaken up was the tip of the iceberg, really.

"I am," she said, "But, I'll get over it. And, I want to keep going. Not using guns won't make dealing with them any easier."

Parker studied Seras very carefully. "No, it won't." Her voice was quiet. "It's not the gun, it's the person holding it who is the threat. And there are plenty of people willing to use them without concern." She took a breath. "So. You're going to be an informed, competent, careful threat, who will use this firearm responsibly. Want to take another shot?"

[and I go to get *food* -- back in an hour, sorry!]

Seras considered Parker's words.

The idea of her being a threat, albeit an informed, competent, careful one, was new to her.

She didn't exactly hate it.

She nodded yes to Parker's question then took the stance, aimed, and squeezed the trigger once more.

The same kickback, the same sound, and this time, the smell wafted over to her as well. Seras gritted her teeth and managed to keep her eyes open this time.

Her aim had been ever so slightly better.

[no worries!]

Parker nodded approvingly. "I think you can handle practicing alone for now. I'll be over here if you have any other questions."

[*waves*]
