Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, Saturday, All Day

So, it wasn't Fall yet by a long shot. The temperatures were still high, the leaves were still green, and the calendar still said August. But the calendar of consumerism didn't care about reality and thus, the welcome picnic was decorated for fall. The tables were covered in reds, oranges, and yellows, there was apple cider in the punch bowls and, of course, if the food on the table could come in pumpkin spice form, it was here in pumpkin spice form.

"Well, Henry and I had a little, uh...misunderstanding," let's just go with that, "but he didn't freak out or anything, so...so far so good?"

"Sometimes that's all you can ask for," Riri said with a little shrug. "It's a pretty small town, right?"

"Yeah," Erasmus agreed. "I mean, Pascagoula isn't that big, but this place puts it to small town shame."

"Pascagoula?" In no way would Riri know where that is.

That wasn't really that surprising. "Mississippi," Erasmus said, in case she hadn't already guessed from the accent. "I don't think I caught where you're from?" Just that she was trying to get somewhere that wasn't Baltimore.

"Chicago," she replied. "Originally. Spent the last couple years in Massachusetts for school, though. MIT."

"I'm sorry you got sidetracked trying to get home," Erasmus said. "But this place seems cool?"

"It's okay, I was... I needed to figure out school stuff anyway." And heading home left her with a tightness in her chest if she focused on it too hard.

"This is probably a big change from MIT, huh?" Erasmus asked.

"Smaller," Riri granted. "Haven't gotten to see the facilities, though."

Joke was on her, she'd have to go deal with that guy who was definitely dead over there.

"According to the materials I saw, the school is in the castle," Erasmus said, gesturing toward it. "So they get style points at least."

Erasmus could confirm there were definitely not any dead people at this picnic!...the woods were a little more concerning.

"An actual castle? For real?" Riri asked. "I thought it was a tourist thing when we showed up, honestly."

"I dunno," Erasmus said with a shrug. "Could be both? It looks like it might actually be old, though. Hey, did your faculty advisor tell you something about the island being made out of shrimp or something?" He suspected he might be being hazed.

"Like, actual shrimp?" Riri asked, making a face. Because maybe she was over sealife for a little bit.

"Something about...the island is weird, right? So she said that instead of magic it might be evolving, or something, and then when I was like, 'Rocks don't evolve,' she was like, 'What if the whole universe was made of shrimp? Ha, checkmate,' or whatever."

That was not how that had gone.

Riri sighed. "Well, she said the island is weird. Like. New York weird."

Somewhere, a bunch of Marvel folks couldn't even counter that assessment.

"But an universe made of shrimp sounds like a thought exercise on how infinite it could be if we assume there are alternate timelines based on every choice starting from the beginning of measurable time."

You asked the scientist this one, Erasmus.

Erasmus nodded at the first part. "I've always heard that New York is weird. And yeah, I think that was what she was trying to get at, but...I don't know. It was a lot. This place is a lot." And he'd known he was coming here.

"Maybe we can regroup and figure out what's real and what's just people messing with us," she suggested. "See if they can all keep their stories straight."

"Once we've settled in a little bit," Erasmus suggested. "I'm pretty sure the part about the squirrels was true." He peered speculatively into a nearby tree.

"Squirrels?" Look, Riri had spent a lot of time questioning the legality of this place.

"Okay, so apparently the squirrels are reporters," Erasmus explained. "And they do have little tiny notebooks. See?" He pointed to the squirrel he just spotted. "It's adorable, if kind of...weird. I asked if it was an enchantment, but Professor Atreides didn't know. She said she's from a universe without magic. I can't even imagine. That sounds so boring."

"Maybe Billie got that explanation?" Riri suggested. If they put their heads together, this could work out! TEAMWORK.

"Or maybe Henry knows! He's my roommate," Erasmus explained. "From 1403. And Bohemia, wherever that is." Europe, Erasmus. It was in Europe. He'd told you so.

"Maybe we mention vaccines to him,"Riri suggested immediately. Just, you know, first thought.

"Oh, that's...that's a really good idea. I hadn't even thought of that. We should do that."
