Wilderness Survival - Week 2| Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto pointed to the box. "Put your shoes in there and take a handout."

"Knowing how to make fire is one of the most important wilderness survival skills possible. Without it, you can't keep warm, cook, or use it to keep predators away from your camp."

"For today's exercise you'll will be split into two groups, one group will start a fire using a bow drill, and the other with flint and steel. You don't get to go home until you have a fire."

Callisto waited until the students had split into their groups, before speaking again.

"Another useful survival skill is the ability to create tools from scratch, even more important is the ability to figure out how to make the best use of the tools available." Callisto held up a pointed stick. "If you want your shoes back, I want a different use for a pointy stick from each of you at the end of class."

Joxer held out the bow drill to Alphonse. "Maybe you'll have better luck."

Parker's got the kindling made into an artistic little bowl now, and she's frowning. "Some time this epoch. Although you're still doing better than I could," she adds.

Alphonse took the bow drill and set it in place, then started to run it back and forth. He may have muttered something about there being an easier way, but after a few minutes he created a small amount of ember on a leaf. "Here we go," he said, lifting the leaf towards Parker. "Might want to do this quickly before it dies down."

Parker hastily got the kindling bundle underneath, and fanned the little flame until it caught the puff of kindling. "Yes! Okay, uh, great, now what?"

"Ah," Alphonse looked down at the flame, not entirely sure himself. "We know we get to leave now?"
