Wilderness Survival - Week 2| Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto pointed to the box. "Put your shoes in there and take a handout."

"Knowing how to make fire is one of the most important wilderness survival skills possible. Without it, you can't keep warm, cook, or use it to keep predators away from your camp."

"For today's exercise you'll will be split into two groups, one group will start a fire using a bow drill, and the other with flint and steel. You don't get to go home until you have a fire."

Callisto waited until the students had split into their groups, before speaking again.

"Another useful survival skill is the ability to create tools from scratch, even more important is the ability to figure out how to make the best use of the tools available." Callisto held up a pointed stick. "If you want your shoes back, I want a different use for a pointy stick from each of you at the end of class."

Buffy pulled out her own pointy stick from wherever she hid it, and held it up in Classic Slayer Position #2 b (not that she knew that). "Stakes are totally handy for vampire killing!" she chirped.

Buffy beamed. Both at getting the answer right and at getting back her shoes. Yay shoes!

Parker grimaces. "Pointy sticks can be used to mark your trail so you don't get lost. Scrape off the bark on a tree, and leave a sign within sight-distance of the last one, and it'll hopefully help you find your way back."

Now she's wondering how Hansel and Gretel ever managed to get in trouble.

"Yes!" Parker does a little dance before she puts her shoes back on.

She's still thinking of hiding clothes out here somewhere.

Sam thought to himself for a minute because Parker stole his answer. "They're good for drawing protective symbols into the ground around your camp," he said.

Molly thought for a moment. "You can use a pointy stick to hold your food over the fire to cook it."

Aeryn's answer is simple. "Stabbing," she says. "Or hunting. Whatever. Shoes."

Max thinks for a moment and says, "They can be used as a brace for a broken limb."

"Toothpick?" Cameron suggested.

The gnome was making all sorts of gestures and was running around as if he were chasing things with an imaginary spear.

The gnome beamed up at Callisto as it hugged Cameron's shoes.

"Uh, can I have those back now?" Cameron asked the gnome.

The gnome handed back one shoe and Cameron sighed.

"Pointy sticks are a part of at least a couple different types of traps," Alec said.

"You can use a pointy stick to help dig up edible roots," Joxer said.

"If you have enough sticks, you can tie them together for the frame of a tent," Alphonse said. "Then you could throw a sheet or a bunch of leaves over it."

Being next to last to get his shoes back meant that most of the obvious uses for pointy sticks and already been used. He searched his mind for something that hadn't been said yet.

"Pointy sticks can be used to built miniature fences, to contain such annoying creatures as weetiny bunnies, molemen, and gnomes."
