The Art of Conversation, 3rd period

"So, um." Jon rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "It was brought to my attention last week that apparently people don't actually enjoy small-talk." Which just made him want to ask why so many of them insisted on it! "So I thought I would...well, that is, I'd like to know just what it is you do enjoy talking about. If you wanted to say."

Which possibly should have been a first-day topic, but look, he never claimed to be good at this!

Excited to talk!

Or the sort-of question, as may be.

Because it's considered polite, Jon. Not because it's fun.

"I love talking about magic, and making things grow," Adrian said. "I also really enjoy discussing crafts; carpentry, sewing, knitting, cooking. I'm not a great blacksmith, but I still enjoy talking about the art."

But if everybody hates to do it, how polite is it to make someone else do it?

"I don't know much about most of those things," Jon admitted, "so any of them you wanted to tell me about, I would probably enjoy."

Because social lubrication, Jon. You couldn't sit down at tea with people you just met and start discussing their health problems or what's happening in your marriage.

"Is there anything in specific you want to know?" Adrian asked. "Rather than me just starting a whole presentation."

Well, Jon didn't really want to hear about those things, either, but surely there were more interesting things to discuss!

"You could start a presentation if you like," Jon said. "About...um. Well, any of those things, really."

"Before coming here," Luma admitted, since it wasn't like it was a big secret or anything, "I ever really only talked to my family, and a few other people, here and there."

If she sounded forcefully blase about that, well, she was trying not to get too specific, otherwise she'd just get upset.

"So with them, I liked talking about hunting, mostly, and sometimes literature or games or music. I'd always wished I had more people to talk to about things like fashion, and I'd sometimes talk with my cousin about what college was like until he got so done with questions that we would just go out for a run or a hunt instead.

"I haven't really found anything in particular that I like talking about here," she added. "It's mostly just getting to know people. I find people here fascinating."

"I take it there are a lot of different kinds of people here than you're used to," Jon noted.

It seemed a safe bet.

"Considering how I'm really only used to less than ten people?" Luma asked, brows lifting, and then she laughed. There was a faint impulse to cover her mouth when she did, but she pulled it down and, in fact, as if to spite that impulse, ended with a full grin of sharp teeth. "You could say that, sure."

Jon nodded. "You remind me of a friend," he blurted out. "Well, not the ten people thing. Just the, um. Well, the teeth and the hunting thing."

Tell Jon what you like to talk about. Then talk about it!

Just in general.

Anything related to money in this country is godawful.
