Philosophy of Food, 3rd period

Hannibal nodded to everyone as they settled in. The front of the room featured a table with a number of identical silver cloches over dishes.

When everyone was ready and listening, Hannibal stood behind the table and spoke.

"While I like to think that food can truly be an art form and a beautiful thing, I am well aware that not everybody shares that opinion. Nor does everybody have that option. Art, preference, culture - many things affect how we think of food. One of those is economics. Availability." He looked at them all seriously. "Not everybody gets the best food. Not everybody gets food they can eat. Some people are lucky if they get anything."

He gestured at the dishes. "So. Each of you gets one of these covered dishes. No peeking. When you each have your own, we'll uncover them all. If you don't like what you have, feel free to try to get something else. Barter, bargain, trade, give away, or steal, whatever you like, remembering that you may still need to see each other later. Consider this a hands-on experience."

Meanwhile, smirking, Gladio opened his and wound up with the fancy looking chocolate dessert.

So of course he had to lean in a little to give Nell a nudge and quirk his chin toward her empty plate. "That looks pretty good," he said, and lifted up his plate to offer her. "Wanna trade?"

Nell smiled at him. "No, but I'd share. This is premium high quality air I have here."

"You're not wrong " Gladio agreed. "That's some of the best looking air I've ever seen. So sharing sounds pretty good to me."

He was going to then reach for a fork so that he could pierce the air with it, and nudge his dessert closer between them.

"You can have some of mine, too," he said, pulling a face, "if you'd even want to."

"Oh, yours looks quite delightful as well," Nell said, "and I'd be happy to share with you."

She glanced over at Liliana and smiled. "If only we'd had the oatmeal, though I'm sure it couldn't possibly be as good as yours."

No one mind Ignis' faint snort at the instruction not to peek.

But he also hung back, in a matter of speaking, to mostly let his classmates choose first, and since Gladio and Nell had taken their turn, he mostly just gestured to the remaining two to let Liliana have her choice before claiming the remaining one.

Liliana took one and immediately lifted up the dome. "Porridge," she said with a slight, ironic smile. Things just kept building up, didn't they? "You're the last, my darling."

"And then there was one," Ignis intoned, deep and dramatic, as he reached for the lid to pull it away, a reveal far more effective for his fellow classmates, though he did breath in deep for any initial aromas that may assist him. He needed to lean in a little more.

"There seems to be...a few things going on with this dish," and he couldn't quite pin it down. "Help me out, my love?"

"Shall I give you a hint?" she teased. "Though I'm not sure what your prize might be."

She considered her hint. "An upmarket meatloaf," she decided.

"Is that the hint?" Ignis simply had to ask, with a lift of an eyebrow and a truly impressive ability to hold back a smirk. "Or the prize?"

Liliana's expression when she opened the lid was almost pained before it shifted to ironic amusement. "The breakfast of childhoods everywhere, I'm sure."
