Computers and Fun #2 5/31 Wednesday Afternoon

Abby sat on top of the table in the computer lab, sipping a large glass of pop. As each student came in, they would find a box of various computer parts and a lab coat stitched with their name.

"Hey guys, how did the virtual pets go last week? Did any of them live through the whole week?" Abby grinned at a few of the students. "Or even last through the class?"

"Today we're going to over the basics of computers, how they work and how to build them." Abby launched into a brief history of computers and how they operate, covering everything from the abacus to windows XP. Okay, so maybe it wasn't that brief. "Just in case some of you fell asleep during that, we're going to watch a video that might help you understand."

Abby lifted up a spare box of parts and shook it lightly. "In each of your boxes you'll find enough bits and pieces to make a rudimentary computer. Each box is different, but everyone should be able to make something that can light up or beep or do both. Be sure to wear your lab coats to protect your clothing, not to mention the fact that they look really spiffy."

Let me know what happened with your virtual pets.

John signs in. HIs virtual pet has not dissappeared, was not dissassembled, and did not get sent back in time.

Also, he couldn't find anyone with the virtual pet to fight, so it's a bit weak.

Zack signed in.

His virtual floating head has somehow accquired a virtual straightjacket.

Willow signed in.

Her virtual hippo is not dead. It can also do a rudimentary cha cha. Or maybe it's the twist. Hard to tell with something 2D.

Conner signed in, virtual-pet-less on account of having missed the first workshop. He was slightly more apologetic about this than you might expect.

Demyx signed in. His virtual monkey died twice, but he seekritly reset it (by mashing buttons and hoping) and it's currently just-barely still alive.

Bridge signs in. His virtual gremlin seems to have benefited from spending time with RIC. It's now dressed in a little digital SPD uniform.

Sam signed in. His lizard was alive and well, and just a little bigger than it was last week.

Peter signed in. His monkey was healthy but it wouldn't stop crying for some reason. Damn emo monkey.

Ranma signed in.

His virtual pet is eveloved all the way. He's been so bored that he's been able to ply with it every day.

Cally signed in with a very dead virtual pet.

Oops. She forgot about it.

Mac signs in.

Her virtual pet is somewhat alive, although it doesn't look very big. She may have had to re-hatch it at some point.

Listen to the lecture, watch the video, ~~sleep~~ ask questions.

Willow took avid notes. This was the sort of enthusiasm that other students would probably reserve for Becky's sex ed workshop. To Willow sex ed vs. computers was six of one, half-dozen of the other.

Conner spent the lecture and video doodling a schematic of something that looked a lot like a soccer scoreboard. Odds were very, very good that it was, in fact, a soccer scoreboard.

Demyx stared throughout the movie. It was hard to tell if he was actually avidly watching...or if he fell asleep with his eyes open.

Sam took notes that could have almost rivaled Willow's. Clearly, he was going to have to learn how to write faster.

Peter's notes were a bit shorter than Sam's, but he had developed a pretty efficient shorthand for note-taking thanks to his journalism experience last semester so the information was just better packed in there.

Ranma tries his best to pay attention and does a great job for about 10 minutes. He procedes to fall asleep face first on the desk somehow.

Mac watches the video, scribbling the odd illegible note down on her pad of paper.

[You can build anything you want. Really simple computer, robot, blinking light thingy. Just not anything that can kill us all, please.]

John assembles something that beeps, lights up, and ~~gives the finger~~ moves slightly. It's hand shaped.

I love the magic school bus so much. We need a Ms. Frizzle here at FH.

I challenge you to a duel! *brandishes Gremlin tamagotchi*
