Philosophy of Food, 3rd period

"Good afternoon," Hannibal said, nodding to the class. "Today we continue our discussion of what is and isn't food, and how our preferences are formed."

He waved toward the table behind him, which held pairs of dishes this time. "We've got an assortment of foods and beverages today, organized into pairs. You may choose only one from each pair - you cannot have both. You may choose neither, if you prefer. But in any case, you must explain your choice. Why do you prefer the option you've chosen - taste? Nostalgia? Curiosity? Feel free to debate with each other as well, and ask each other or me questions. Remember, there are no wrong answers - it's reasoning and thought we're looking for."

There's not much actual lecture today.

Nell was terribly embarrassed by all the luggage that followed her around. USELESS, CHILD BRIDE, UNLOVED, CULT, BURN HER AT THE STAKE, DEAD DOGS, and others she didn't even want to mention. All she could do was tuck them in the corner when she came in and try her best to ignore them.

"This one is simple," Hannibal noted. He tapped each of two carafes; they had glasses and ceramic cups nearby. "A simple taste, little difference between them. Hot water; iced water."

Nell considered, then chose iced water. She used her foot to push another bag out of the way. "I'm not so much a fan of just hot water, unless you put tea in it, but ice water is always good."

Liliana nodded towards Nell. "Hot water is for tea or my bath, darling. Otherwise, cold please."

"No question," Nell said with a smile. "As long as you include hot tub with bath."

"Paté," Hannibal announced, uncovering the next two dishes. "With fresh-baked, lightly toasted bread and garnish, or as a lump." He grimaced slightly at the latter; after the time spent preparing it, it nearly physically hurt to present it like this. "These are the same basic food, although the first does have some accompaniments."

"The first one just looks more tempting," Nell said, ignoring the ONLY GOOD AS A CARETAKER behind her. "Plus those accompaniments add additional layers of flavor."

"Paté is delicious, but it is no more meant to be eaten by itself than a stick of butter. You certainly can eat it that way, if you must, but you are doing it a grave disservice."

The covers came off the next set of dishes. "Pan-fried salmon, or barbequed salmon head. Please keep in mind," he added as he squared the plates up, "that the head of the fish has much more nutrition, particularly prepared like this."

This one took a little more considering. "I'm gonna try the salmon head," she said. "I ain't," CHURCH SPEAK dropped next to her. "I never had salmon head before, though I've eaten enough heads of other fishes, so I'd like to try it."

"Pan-fried," Liliana decided, though she did take a few minutes of her own to consider. "After the heaviness and flavor of the paté, I want something a little lighter."

This was another set of carafes. "Beer, or wine," Hannibal explained. "The beer is home-brewed; the wine is a very good vintage."

Nell wasn't much of a one for alcohol, so this one also required a bit more thought. "M'not sure I'd have a real appreciation for good wine," she said, "and I only plan to have a sip or two of whatever I choose, so I think i'll try the beer."

"Normally, I would go for the wine," Liliana said. "Though if we're having wine are part of our impromptu meal, I would need to know more about it. An unsuitable wine, good vintage or not, would be more disharmonious than a beer, even if I am significantly less fond of beer."

"Cotton candy," Hannibal explained, pointing at the pale purple threads. "Homemade. It's not so fluffy as the mass-produced stuff, and the dye is natural. And chocolate, anise, and sea-salt toffee."

"Cotton candy," Nell said quickly. "I've always wanted to try some!"

Gladio hadn't been surprised that today lead to a whole luggage store of baggage for Nell and just a single bag marked with the crest of the Crownsguard and the Amicitia coat of Arms on it, which meant he had more than enough to help her carry some, metaphorically or physically, but this bit of revelation did surprise him, at least a little bit.

"I feel like I have failed you now," he remarked.

Politely ignoring the scoff of "Surely not" from Ignis, who, surprise surprise, didn't seem to think too highly of the stuff.

Nell had been looking at the large bag reading UNLOVED when Gladio spoke, so her eyes widened and she turned to him quickly, cotton candy in hand. "What? No! Never."

Bold of that bag to make a claim like that with Gladio standing right there. Clearly, then, they were all filled with lies and it might befit Nell to just ignore them.

"Nah," he said, "definitely failure. How 'bout this? Have the toffee now, and then we'll go out later and get some cotton candy together outside of a classroom."

He gave one of his bag a nudge with his toe with a faint grunt.

"Just probably not today."

Today felt like it needed to be a stay in for snuggling kind of day.

Nell grinned at him. "How about you get toffee and I'll get the cotton candy and we share," she suggested with a twinkle in her eye. "And then another day we can go get more together."

She wrinkled her nose at the bags. Today was definitely a day for snuggling inside with her Gladio.

Liliana was only too happy to curl up with the chocolate and nibble at it. Especially if she could do the same with her paramour.

So yeah, having your throat cut hurts. Who knew?
