Something about what Liliana said raised Luma's hackles, made the hairs on the back of her neck tingle with anger and frustration and irritation. And confusion. Didn't she want them to be honest? Then why was she agruing with Luma about doing just that? What had she gotten wrong this time? How was she supposed to even know the right answers, she wasn't any good at stuff like this, and not now, bags that said STUPID and NOT CLEVER, although they were really cute.
But then Luma thought about something Liliana had told her last week, about sometimes being a girl and sometimes being a wolf, and today, she was very much a wolf, so she huffed out some of her frustration,and then scoffed out with a realization that tugged the corner of her mouth a little as she remembered that, in a way she was sure would make her grandfather proud of her.
"Well," she allowed, "my kind do always make for convenient monsters, don't we? Fine, then. Let them die, and let their parents and loved ones point their finger at me to cover their failings in being able to protect their sick and their young and their elderly without the crutch of the child. Let them feel a fraction of the pain it had to endure for their peace of mind, and let me shoulder the blame. And then they'll all die, and they'll know, and it'll be a cautionary tale to tell the next generation as they're tucked into bed. 'Don't put your happiness in the suffering of another, else the big bad wolf will come down from the woods and steal it away and then you'll die, and who wants that?' Anything to save them from having to confront that maybe they're the real monsters all along."
Eleanor might br anchored today by the baggage of being called a monster, but Luma knew what she was, and she knew that it was key to survival, too.
