National Park Adventure Team! [Monday, Period 4]

Class met on the front steps of the school today, as everyone had been ~~handwavily~~ notified to do.

Ghani was waiting for them, in a simple Fremen tunic and pants, sturdy boots, and Trebor in a toddler sling on her back.

"Hello, friends both old and new," she said with a smile. "I am Ghanima Atreides, the fine fellow with me is my son Trebor, and this is National Park Adventure Team!"

"For the rest of the term, we will be touring the National parks around the world, but today, I want to gauge your fitness level before I start planning too much! We're going to start off with a fairly easy hike -- we're going to the Carlsbad Caverns in the Guadalupe Mountains of southeastern New Mexico, here in the United States. We have tickets to tour the caverns, and then we can walk the wilderness area afterwards if there is time."

Almost as if right on cue, a portal appeared behind Ghanima, with a stunning view on the other side.

"Alright, Adventure Team," she continued cheerfully. "Let's start walking and talking!"

Ghanima had turned around and strode confidently into the portal, and was waiting on the other side for everyone.

"Fantastic!" she said once the last person had arrived. "Welcome to the Big Room Trail."

"This two kilometer hike is relatively flat, and the guides say it generally takes an hour and a half. However, given the general fitness level of Fandom residents, I think we can manage it in an hour if we keep a basic brisk pace."

Was she already walking? Yes, yes she was. Keep up!

Okay, Arden was going to stop to take a look around first. Because damn. What a view.

It was a little weird being underground, but there was still plenty of fresh, flowing air here, so Arden was fine.

Gladio was going to snort a little, and take plenty of time while walking (he might actually have to slow his pace, but he was used to that) to roll his shoulders and stretch his arms in the open cavern space, almost entirely out of habit. He was pretty sure the park wouldn't have as many tight places for him to have to squeeze through as all the caves he dealt with back home, but...well, too many of the caves back home had tight spaces he had to squeeze through, so he was going to be ready for it if this one did, too!

Lana walked briskly as requested, but also kept turning around to look all over the cave. It might not be as impressive as some of the places on Ilum, but it was still quite a sight.

Only two kilometers? Not a concern. Nell shot a smile over at Gladio and headed out.

"Now," she said, not slowing down in the slightest. "I suppose we should do the general Fandom introductions as we go."

"I am Ghanima Atreides, your captain for our little Adventure Team. If you are uncomfortable referring to me by my first name, you may call me Miss Ghanima, Lady Ghanima, or Professor."

"While I am a desert creature from another galaxy and another time, I am adept at survival in all different types of terrain." She glanced back to smile at the class. "--And I am one hundred percent teaching this class this term to expose Trebor to all this planet has to offer, and instill the principals of land stewardship in him early. My planet is undergoing a huge terraforming process, and I want him to understand what that means."

"Now, next!"

"Um, I'm Arden Finch, from North Carolina and in roughly the present," she said. "I enjoy exploring and doing fun things out in nature. I'm pretty sure I'm in decent shape, but I guess we'll see at the end of this walk."

Elementals had more strength and stamina than the average human, which...yeah. Probably put her on par with most people here on the island.

"Welcome, Arden," Ghanima replied. "Do you have a favorite type of nature? A type of place that rejuvenates you more than others?"

"Being up high," Arden said promptly. "Rooftops, mountainsides, the canopies of tall trees...anything that has my face in the wind and the feeling like I could fly off at any moment."

"Then I'll find us a high-altitude trip adventure once I'm sure everyone's going to be able to handle it," Ghanima promised. "Perhaps Kishtwar, and we may get lucky and see a snow leopard."

"Gladiolus Amicitia," he offered, with a grin. "From a planet called Eos, and there's just a whole bunch of stuff with that, so we don't need to get too deep into it. And even though I was born and raised a city boy, I really do love being outdoors and in the wilderness and nature. This sort of thing really is me in my element, so obviously I was going to jump at the chance to tag along as part of this Adventure Team."

Yeah, okay, he was being kind of a dork about that aspect of it, too. He liked being a part of a team! He couldn't help it!

"Then I'm glad to have you along, Gladiolus," Ghanima answered. "Is there a particular type of wilderness or activity that's a personal favorite?"

"Just Gladio's fine," he assured her, because as amused as he could be whenever anyone used his full proper name, the novelty of it would probably wear off pretty quickly. "And that's an easy one. Camping. Definitely camping."

There was a beat, as he decided whether or not to add a caveat, snorting faintly when he reached his conclusion.

"I'd be more than happy to skip right over fishing, though."

"Perhaps I'll make that the final," she mused. "Camping, that is, for I share your aversion to fishing."

"While my father's family is from an ocean planet, that is not my nature. Even the relatively tame ocean of Fandom took me a very long time to get used to."

"Henry," Henry introduced herself with a little wave. If she had a last name, she wasn't sharing it. "I like seeing new places."

Preferably not because she'd accidentally teleported there. But again, not sharing that part.

"Hopefully we should be getting you lots of new places," Ghanima assured her. "Anywhere you haven't seen yet that you've always wanted to go?"

"Lana Beniko." She smiled at Ghani and nodded to everyone. "I'm from a different galaxy, and I enjoy seeing all that Earth has to offer. It's a fascinating planet."

"For one, moderately-small planet, it truly is diverse," Ghanima agreed. "And since we have the Portalocity system at our disposal, it seems a shame not to use it."

"Absolutely," Lana agreed in turn. "I've had classes visiting all over the planet, and I could probably keep going for years."

"I'm Nell Ingram," she said with a smile. "I'm not so familiar with caves, but I'm in decent enough shape and I love being outdoors."

"It's my hope to introduce everyone to ecosystems they may not be familiar with," Ghanima admitted. "I spent a large amount of my childhood growing up in cave-systems, so I admit to starting with a favorite."

Enjoy the hike, admire the scenery, take the shortcut so you can check out the Visitor Center, chat with your classmates!

If you want to stay past the class period and hike outside as well, ask Ghanima, and she's happy to arrange a portal for you later.
