Health Education, Thursday, Period 3
"Today we're gonna talk about a very serious topic, and one which may cause emotional reactions," Don warned his students. "But it's important to discuss, and remember, if you need to leave the class at any time you may do so. Today we're going to talk about addiction, and substance abuse."
After a pause to see if anyone was going to go ahead and leave, Don said, "Now, there are a lot of things one can become addicted to. Alcohol. Drugs. Tobacco. Caffeine--a lot of us are addicted to caffeine, but society says that one's fine, so." He shrugged. "Or it could be that where you're from you can get hooked on something most people wouldn't consider a problem. I've heard of people getting hooked on magic, for example, which is something the broader population is never gonna have to worry about. An addiction really becomes a problem when it's impacting your life. When it's hurting your relationship with your family or friends, or your career, or you can't function without whatever it is that you're addicted to." Again, unless it was caffeine. Lots of people couldn't function without caffeine. Don had a normal level of problem, Thor.
"So, what can we do about this? Some people would say, 'Never get addicted in the first place,' but it's not always that simple. Sure, you can simply not do meth (and you really shouldn't do meth), or if you know alcoholism runs in your family it would be wise for you to avoid alcohol, but a lot of people get hooked on painkillers they genuinely need or needed at some point. But it's important to know that help is available. There are hotlines and such you can contact, or you can ask your doctor for help accessing resources if you need them at any point. And if you return to a previous time period and find yourself in need of help without those resources, I would really recommend not quitting anything cold turkey. That can end really badly, with...seizures and such.
"So, now that I've depressed everyone, does anyone have any questions?"
