Nature & Nature Magic (Thursday Afternoon, The Park, 5/25/2006)

"Guys, I'm Jenny Calendar, and if you hadn't figured it out? This is Nature and Nature Magic. With any luck, it won't start raining, but if it does?" She points over at a stack of umbrellas. "Help yourselves. Given that I've got a new and eclectic mix of students here, let's go with the basics, and then get into something more. Why don't you guys all introduce yourselves, tell us a bit about where you're from, and why you've signed up for this class."

"For starters, let me explain what I want to do: Magic is intimately tied in with nature. I generally work with my laptop, but everything I do with that? Still originated with nature and got ported over to the computer, generally without cramming it full of funky code that looks like it was written by a bunch of drunk monkeys given typewriters and told to produce Shakespeare. Generally. Depends on how complicated it is. But! To understand a lot of magic, you have to understand how it works with nature, and not generally against it.

There aren't too many rules in this workshop, it being summer and us wanting to take things easy. First off, try not to overdo it with the non-workshop related magic. I don't know what level of talent y'all have, but trust me, I'm sure you'll all impress me over the course of the workshop. Second, if you're a non-magic user, chill. This is all basic stuff here, and I'm not going to ask for anyone to conjure an oak tree from an acorn. Which, now that I think about it, may disappoint some of you." Because Jenny was fairly familiar with the nature of Fandom High's seriously overachieving bunch, really, not because she knew Willow. No, really.

Last? If you're not fond of magic or witches or whatever we've got here in the way of magic users, keep it to yourself." Jenny glanced warily at Macbeth presuming he's there, as he's signed up for the workshop, and grinned at the wee little dagger if it was around. "Because if someone decides to bring the vengeance while my back is turned? Or even while I'm watching. Well, if you deserve, my sympathy will be limited.

So. Let's get started."

{{OOC: These are the IC rules only. I trust you guys on an OOC level to have fun and go nuts and break the IC rules if you want without going overboard. If you're worried about something, don't be. We'll talk about it and figure it out.}}

"The ancient Greeks thought that everything in nature was created from four basic elements. The idea originally came from Empedocles somewhere around 450 BCE. The basic elements are earth, air, fire, and water--not a shock to many of you guys, I'm guessing.

Each element has its own properties: Fire is hot and dry, Earth is cold and dry, Air is hot and wet, and Water is cold and wet. Those of you who didn't get that Fire was hot and Water was wet? Can I ask if you're on something, and how good is it, and where I can get some?

Later, Aristotle introduced the concept of 'aether,' and the Pythagoreans introduced the concept of 'idea,' both of which were considered to be a quintessence, or fifth element. That concept survives today in the form of 'spirit,' which pretty much combines aether and idea into a fun mishmash of philosophy.

Other fun ways of looking at elements: Taoist philosophy has Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, but no air. Samkhya philosophy--from Hinduism--has the Tattvas of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Aether, and a whole lot of other stuff we won't be getting into. Japanese philosophy meshed both of those and goes with Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Void--and sometimes has a sixth element of Consciousness.

I've put some information online for you guys, if you're looking for extra reading on the elements. We're going to be focused mostly on practice, rather than theory, this summer."

Jenny nodded at a bunch of supplies she had set up. "Today's just the getting to know each other, yourselves, and nature session. Group up or work singly--though I'd prefer groups--and play."

There are buckets, of dirt, watering cans, and seedlings of various species of beneficial herbs and flowers for everyone to plant their own container garden. There are also marshmallows, twigs, and chocolate and graham crackers set up near a small bonfire in a pit, prisms and wind chimes hung on the branches of nearby trees, and a large glass bowl full of goldfish sitting on a card table she'd brought out and set up.

OOC: Here is the syllabus and roster for this workshop. Also, fun wiki link to classical elements in pop culture.

Wait for the OCD! Yay, OCD! It's done now, and barring unforeseen work emergencies, the play shouldn't be too slow.

Dawn walked after having the bejeezus scared out of her by catching up with Willow, nibbling on the marshmallow she'd toasted. "So, ever figure out how to get out of your pants?"

Yes, the bright red face was normal, thanks.
likethegun: (i'm kind of speechless)

Sam blinked at Dawn. And blinked again. He hadn't told her about the pants situation, and he knew Dean couldn't possibly have been evil enough to say anything...

"Oh god, please tell me you didn't hear about that from the radio," he said.

Re: The Elements

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"Where else would I have heard it from?" Dawn asked, not knowing that Dean even was aware of the problem.
likethegun: (i'm impressed by you)

Re: The Elements

Sam did a little mental facepalm. "I don't know," he said. "And to answer your first question, no, I still haven't figured out how to get my pants off. Dean and I both tried, and nothing worked."

Re: The Elements

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Dawn was trying really, really hard not to laugh. "Dean tried to get your pants off?"

"And aren't you having bathroom issues?" She whispered.

"Yeah," he said, only realizing after he'd spoken how dirty that sounded. "In a benevolent helping way!" he quickly added.

"And actually, I'm not. Which is why I'm thinking that this is something other than a stuck zipper."

Re: The Elements

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of course," Dawn snickered, even while she enjoyed the mental picture, because pretty. "What do you think it is, then? Have you tried just cutting them off?"

Re: The Elements

[personal profile] likethegun 2006-05-25 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, we tried that, and it didn't work," Sam said, sighing. "I don't know what it could be. It's not like I've been running around without my clothes on, and something wants to get me back for it. I have an entire set of cabinmates who are more worthy candidates for that sort of thing."

Re: The Elements

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Cutting them didn't work?" Dawn frowned. "What were you doing right before you found out they wouldn't come off? And it sounds like you're rooming with a bunch of exhibitionists. How'd they all end up in one cabin? And how'd you end up there with them?"

She may have eyed him just a bit, to see if he was a closet exhibitionist. Not that she knew what one looked like.

"I was sleeping," Sam said, having thought way too much about this over the past day. "I fell asleep while I was reading, and when I woke up in the morning, I couldn't get my pants off." He snickered. "I ended up with the exhibitionists because Dean signed us both up for the cabin, and Jaye Tyler is the most encouraging voyeur ever."

Re: The Elements

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Weird," Dawn said, trying to think of something that would make pants do that. "Did you make someone angry? Maybe it's just superglue?"

"I think I met Jaye," she said, "but maybe I'm wrong. There have been a lot of people."

Re: The Elements

[personal profile] likethegun 2006-05-25 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam tried not to be offended that Dawn would think he could have made anyone angry with him. "The only person who would superglue my pants would be Dean, and he seemed eager enough to help that I doubt he had anything to do with it. And I didn't talk to that many people on Tuesday."

"Jaye's about this tall, with long brown hair." He made a vague motion to someone shorter than himself, which really could have described anyone. "She does the radio, and is apparently Fandom's biggest supporter of boykissy and rabid shirtlessness."

Re: The Elements

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Who'd you talk to Tuesday?" Dawn asked, trying very hard not to start making Sam a list. "Dean would superglue your pants? For real?"

"I've heard the radio, obviously," she said, giggling, "and I support her ideas, but rabid shirtlessness? Doesn't that just get...foamy?"

Re: The Elements

[personal profile] likethegun 2006-05-25 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Dean and I do a lot of things to each other that people normally wouldn't do." It wasn't like Sam was trying to encourage mental images, honestly. "And I don't know, just you and Molly and Parker during our workshop, and Giles in the bookstore, and the people in my cabin...that was about it."

"It only gets foamy if Jaye starts drooling," he teased.

Re: The Elements

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, I know it wasn't me," she snickered, "and I'm going to go out on a limb and say it wasn't Molly. Your cabin seems more inclined to get people to take their clothes off, so we'll count them out for now."

She eyed him suspiciously. "You're sure Giles didn't say anything to you? In, like, oh, I don't know, Sumerian? Or Latin, maybe?"
likethegun: (i'm confused and adorable)

Re: The Elements

[personal profile] likethegun 2006-05-25 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, I'll admit that I would barely recognize Sumerian if I heard it, but everything he said to me was in English. We didn't even talk for that long," Sam said. "It was just, 'Hello, how are you?', 'Oh, you know Dawn?', 'Yes, the school has stange rooming policies, let me go see if I can find those books for you.'"

But now that Sam thought about it, there was something slightly strange that he remembered. "Do you know if he has a policy of giving out free bookmarks to people making their first purchase in the store?"

Re: The Elements

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know," Dawn admitted, "since I haven't bought anything from him. Sorry."

Her jaw tightened. A certain British Mr. Stick-in-the-mud Watcher might have some serious explaining to do.
likethegun: (i'm confused and adorable)

Re: The Elements

[personal profile] likethegun 2006-05-25 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do you really think he would have done something to me?" Sam asked. "Because I really didn't say anything to him to make him mad, I swear."

Re: The Elements

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Normally, I wouldn't say so, because he's big on the responsible use of magic." She studied Sam. "Tell me exactly what you said to him, and what he said back."
likethegun: (i'm confused and adorable)

Re: The Elements

[personal profile] likethegun 2006-05-25 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam thought about it for a few moments while his mun pulled up the conversation. "Okay. He came over while I was browsing, and asked if he could help with anything, and I said no, but I asked if he was the bookstore owner, because I wasn't sure. He said yes, and I told him that you'd mentioned him. He asked how I knew you, I explained that we're roommates when we're not doing the whole cabin thing, and he agreed that was odd."

Re: The Elements

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's it?" Even Dawn was stumped on this one. Maybe it hadn't been Giles? Not that she wouldn't be checking with him to make sure. "Willow said Parker wasn't a nice person. Maybe she did it?"

Re: The Elements

[personal profile] likethegun 2006-05-25 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam smirked. "Parker seems more like the 'toss you in front of an angry ninja' type. Does she even know magic? Because this is definitely not normal. I mean, the fabric fixed itself when Dean tried to cut it."

Re: The Elements

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Miho's nice," Dawn protested. "Okay, scary as all heck, but she was nice to me yesterday. I have no idea if she knows magic--I don't think I've talked to her since the first day."
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

Re: The Elements

[personal profile] likethegun 2006-05-25 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think you officially win for talking to Miho and living to tell the tale," Sam said, smiling softly.

Re: The Elements

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Dawn was dying to tell Sam about the ninja lessons, but then she realized that maybe part of being a ninja was not telling everyone you knew what you were up to.

"You just have to treat her with respect. And I think she likes pie, but not coconut cream," she said, having no idea where she came up with that idea.
