The Great British Bakeoff! But American! - 2nd Period

The tent was back up and had space heaters! Because dear god it was cold out still. But the teachers were learning, you see.

"Welcome back," Tony said. "We'll start out with judging your stuffed, braided brioche from last week while you get into the first challenge of the day with your take on a Whoopie Pie. Which isn't a pie at all, it's two soft cookies sandwiched around some frosting."

Which was delicious, honestly.

And more like cakes, but your teachers didn't care. "Two soft cookies of whatever flavor you chose, sandwiched with homemade marshmallow fluff that can also be flavored," Steve said.

"And then after that, we'll be testing you with some jam filled heart cookies," Tony added. To prepare for next month, of course. If you get them right."

"Yum," Steve said helpfully. "And your take home assignment is a gingerbread house! Well. Castle."

"It's of the school," Tony added helpfully. "So it should be easy to model."

Yelena's bread was less braided than a mound of overproofed dough stuffed with beets. Why beets? Look she had a last minute of panic when baking and went with beets.

There's a reason she's second to the bottom.

Nell had made some triple braided brioche breads stuffed with a chocolate hazelnut spread. They were rather delicious if she did say so herself.

Kitty didn't know what happened, besides the fact that she'd run out of time and had to do a rush job this morning. It had been so promising! So cheesy! And so underbaked!

Yelena decided that at this point in class it was clear she needed to zig to all the other's baker's zagging. She went with a savory whoopie with an herbed cornbread and pimento cream cheese filling.

It looked and smelled horrible.

Nell had made whoopie pies before. "These are your classic soft 'cookies' made from a red velvet cake base, cut into hearts and with a creamy raspberry jam and marshmallow creme filling. There's just a touch of vanilla in it to bring out the flavors," Nell said. "Enjoy."

This Kitty could do! Her cookies were going to be chocolate and the filling was hazelnut. It wouldn't be the prettiest but it would taste good!

True, this was the technical and Yelena sucked at the technical. Always. So she decided to follow the recipe to the letter... except make the heart cookies look like they had been stabbed with fondant knives. The strawberry jam made excellent blood.

Kitty did end up frowning over at her when she saw what was happening there. Just... it was interesting.

"Is it too crime scene or too serial killer?" Yelena asked as she caught Kitty's frown.

"That's what I'm going for because the whole technical cooking thing is not my bag. So. Stabbed cookie hearts."

Nell had some difficulty with her dough and the cutouts. She'd tried to make some fancy flower shaped cookies with a strawberry filling, but ultimately the dough wasn't even enough, so parts of the cookies were almost burned while the others were not cooked through all of the way. Sigh...

Kitty had not done this before but she was very excited about it. It was pretty much just Jammie Dodgers, right? She could totally handle that.
