Bettering Your Community & Yourself, period 3

Jon nodded as people filed into the classroom, fidgeting a bit. He was in his standard first-day-of-class appearance, which meant he wasn't as strung out as he sometimes got, and his clothes were neat and professional, albeit his hair was a bit rumpled from his nervously running his fingers through it.

When it was time to start and he judged everyone had made it in, he cleared his throat and stood up straight. "Welcome. I'm Jonathan Sims, and I'll be teaching this course. Although I suppose it's less teaching and more a sort of guiding." He frowned. "I don't know we're likely to learn new things, so much as experience them. Though I could be wrong."

Look, he'd just told the moose he wanted to do something, anything, where he could teach on his own. He'd given up trying to turn in actual outlines.

"Anyway. This class is meant to involve bettering the community and ourselves, and in order to do that, we have to know what needs bettering. And we've got at least a few people here I haven't taught before. So, let's introduce ourselves, and along with your name, give me one thing about the community and one thing about yourself that you would like to better."

He cleared his throat. "As I said, my name is Jonathan Sims. You may call me Mr. Sims or Jon. I am from London in modern Earth. I would like to see if there's a way to make the steps less slippery when it rains, and I suppose I could get better at relaxing."

He nodded stiffly to the students. "Now you."

Introduce yourself! Name, maybe loosely where you're from, one thing you'd like to better in the community, and one thing you'd like to better in yourself.

"The community here?" Stark asked. "I think...we come together for parties, sometimes, but we aren't necessarily all connected and it might be better if we were. At home, my other home, there's always going to be more to be done for my people.:

"Hi, there!" Graham had also been fidgeting from the beginning of class, but it was more of in that excited, bouncy sort of way of a person with way too much energy for such a scrawny (though slightly less so recently!) body. "I'm Sir Graham of Daventry!" He bowed a little, tipping his hat and beaming at the rest of the class. "And as a knight of Daventry, bettering my community is my main goal, whether that means just checking in on people to see how they're doing or slaying dragons that have been terrorizing the neighborhood! Although I have to admit, I've done waaaaaaaay more of the former than the latter....I actually haven't had to do any of the latter yet. Which is a good thing! I'd rather not have to do that if I don't have to.

"Now, let's see..." He then took a moment to tap his chin thoughtfully. "One thing I'd like to better in my community is maybe have more things to bring people together! I feel like that does loads of good for a community, in my experience, and Fandom is great about that, but Daventry could probably use some more things along that line. And one thing I'd like to better about myself? Oh, well, that's nearly everything, but I have been trying to work out more, especially, well, that should come in handy for any times I do have to go slay a dragon, you know? But yeah!" He smiled, looking quite pleased with his answer as he lifted his chin. "I think those are good ones!"

"Hello, Sir Graham." Jon nodded to him. "We could probably work on some ways to get people together here. And," he sighed. "I imagine we could work in a trip to the gym. It's...not a bad idea."

Gladio would be thrilled.

"I'm Arden Finch, from the Tri--from Raleigh, North Carolina," Arden said, since apparently nobody outside of North Carolina knew what or where 'the Triangle' was. "My community thing is maybe less a problem on the island, but I always get worried about homeless folk, especially in the winter. And for me..."

A moment while she considered her wording.

"I guess maybe...working on some of my, uh...skills? That I've basically ignored my whole life."

"I don't think we have homeless here, no," Jon agreed. "But we could probably volunteer at a shelter across the causeway, if you'd like. And...I'm not sure how we could help you work on your skills," he confessed. "Except for maybe a free period and encouragement."

"Ah, I'm sure the time in the gym will help!" she said, so hopefully no one would be inclined to ask her what, specifically, she was looking to improve. "Train up some of that natural athleticism!"

"Illyana Rasputin," Yana replied with a waive. "Originally Russian, most recently from New York, and I don't really have much about myself I want to better, I like me," which had taken her a long time to get there, "--although I am, ah, what is the phrase? 'An acquired taste?' for some people."

Most people.

"If I had to pick something to better my community, I would like to do something to support emerging mutants or magic users that gives them options besides 'homeless prey' and 'pick a side in a battle for your life.'"

"Er...yes, that doesn't sound like a good set of options," Jon agreed. "I don't know if there are many emerging mutants or magic users here, though. Would...I'm curious if you'd want to try setting something up back where you came from."

That would probably take more than a class period. Unless they just went to New York and handed out Fandom University flyers.

"Er...all right." Look, she didn't sound Spanish, but a lot of expats went to Spain. Or maybe in her world, Barcelona was American.

"I'm not entirely here by my own free will, either." When was the last time he'd had that? "So...one thing you'd like to make better in the community and one thing in yourself."

Lucky for Jon, there was a Liliana lurking waiting to ambush him after class.

"Hello, Jon, darling," she purred. "How lovely to run into you."

Said the woman, taking and teaching no classes and therefore having no reason to be in the school at all.
