fandomhigh | Photography Workshop [Week One]

Mindful that not everyone might have received her email, Veronica had hung some *handwavy* signs around the camp area directing photography students to the lecture hall where they were holding their first workshop.

As students entered, she handed out them a syllabus and a handout titled "Photography Basics" and directed them to the coffee and pastries courtesy of J,GOB.

Once everyone had arrived and was seated, she introduced herself.

"Good morning. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Veronica Mars. Please call me Veronica." There may have been a slight glare in Cam's direction at those words. "I just graduated from Fandom High and I've been interested in photography for as long as I can remember. Today is going to be an easy day. I want you to introduce yourselves to me and each other and I want you all to tell me why you signed up for this workshop." Another glare in Cam's direction and also one for Bel.

"If you brought a camera, I'd like to see it and approve it. If you need a camera, we'll get you set up with one. If you didn't get my email, I'd like to re-iterate that after this week, we will be developing photos in each workshop session, so please wear clothes that you don't mind having splashed with chemicals. After this week, we'll be meeting in the Journalism classroom so we can use the dark room. Last class will be back here and you're welcome to invite friends to that one."

She smiled at the group. "Let's start the introductions."

Happily ignoring any glares, Cameron decided to just get his introduction over with. "I'm Cameron Mitchell. I signed up for this workshop because all the blonde seniors seem to want me in their class for some reason and decided to secretly put me in their workshops. I don't know why."

Veronica chuckled. "Yes, the blonde seniors have a conspiracy against you," she said.

"Ha! I knew it!" Cameron beamed.

"Just don't tell Chloe and Cal that I told you," Veronica said. "They might kick me out of the club."

"I'm Belthazor," Bel said. "I, uh, signed up for this class because ~~I'm stalking Veronica~~ it seemed interesting."

~~Oh does that mean I'll start getting presents again?~~ "Do you have any experience taking pictures?" Veronica asked.

"I got a nice shot of this chick in a sailor suit once," Bel said. "But that was just with a little disposable camera. Not anything fancy."

"And if that picture surfaces in this class, you will get detention," Veronica said sweetly.

It definitely seemed a bit odd to be introducing herself to Veronica . . . but, eh, why not. "I'm Nadia Santos. I signed up for this class because ~~surveilance~~ ~~microfilm~~ ~~miniature cameras~~ photography seemed like something interesting that I might want to use later in life, for either fun or a career."

Veronica grinned and made a mental note to introduce Nadia to the wonders of hidden cameras outside of the workshop. "What kind of pictures have you taken in the past?"

"Just polaroids, really." To program a robot to chase a demon. "And those are almost all of people."

"We'll be focusing mostly on taking pictures of inanimate objects," Veronica said. "But the same principles would apply when taking pictures of people."

Jaye waves. "Hi. I'm Jaye, and I like taking pictures, especially when people are being dumb and embarrassing, so might as well make sure they're good ones."

What, it's a valid reason.

Veronica laughs. At least Jaye is honest. "I have a lot of experience taking pictures of people in dumb and embarrassing situations," Veronica shares. "All part of the PI gig."

"My name is Zacky Addy," he said. "I signed up because I like photography, and it's a valuable skill in the profession I'm interested in."

"It's nice to meet you, Zack," Veronica said with a smile. "What profession are you interested in?"

"Forensic anthropology...and engineering."

"Well that's an interesting combination," Veronica said. "But I'm sure photography is a big part of anthropology. Do you have your own camera?"

"Hi, I'm Buffy Summers." Buffy waved to the class. "And I signed up because I thought it sounded like fun! And I don't have a camera." Brief pause. "What's an email?"

Wow, this Buffy was way younger than the Buffy Veronica knew. And if she didn't know what an email was... she must have been jumped forward in time like Angela.

"Nice to meet you, Buffy," Veronica said carefully. "An email is an electronic letter. This might sound like an odd question, but when are you from?"

"Um, 1997?" Buffy bit her lip. "I don't think I have an email."

Veronica smiled. "Everyone gets an email through the school," she explained. "It's your first name, a period, and your last name at fandomhigh dot net. Um, have you ever used a computer? Or the internet?"

Elizabeth went straight for the coffee, and cradled a cup protectively as she introduced herself. "I'm Elizabeth. I thought I should take more photos this summer and what better way to do it than a photography workshop?"

"Makes as much sense as anything else," Veronica said. "And you're not limited by the scavenger hunt prompts," she explained. "You can take photos of whatever you want. The goal is to get you practice and give you some technique."
