Ethics, Tuesday, December 3, 2024

"We hope you enjoyed your long weekend," Anakin began, "but we don't care enough about them to ask for details."

Thanks, Anakin. "As you may have noticed, we are in December, which means the island will be quirkier than usual, with a chance of invasion by finals week. Today we will talk about the ethics of violence."

"Ideally, a sapient being would never find it necessary to engage in violence," Ahsoka stated. "Unfortunately we live in a far from ideal world."

Anakin nodded. "We were both trained to use violence as a last resort." That lesson had stuck better for one of them. Cough. "It certainly shouldn't be a first resort."

Unless they were really annoying.

There was a reason Ahsoka had lost a good five limbs less than Anakin. "So in what situations does it become ethical to use or refrain from violence. Defence of others? Of yourself?"

"Or do you believe that it's never acceptable to use violence?" If Anakin already looked a little resigned to arguing against that position, well, he'd been teaching ethics for decades.

"It would be better, of course, if no one ever had to be violent but that sort of world doesn't exist. There is no ideal place with ideal people. Protecting yourself, or others, isn't wrong. If you can do that without causing undue harm, again, that would be best. But it isn't always possible."

Sometimes you just had to shoot people, Anakin.
