Dining Hall - 05/23/06

The kitchen staff have all called in sick today. So, a shiny food replicator has been rolled out to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. It has been preprogrammed for all Earth food and drinks.

Tempe walked up to the replicator. Hmm, this couldn't be too complicated.

"Waffles. Hot. Maple syrup on the side."

A plate of waffles appeared. She picked them up and smiled.

"Lemonade. Cold. Lots of ice."

A glass of lemonade appeared.

Tempe headed towards a table with her breakfast.

Marie headed to the dining hall before her morning workshop. She looked at the machine with some trepidition.

"Bagel, toasted, with cream cheese and a cup of hot chocolate with extra marshmellows."

She blinked at how quickly the food appeared, but picked it up and walked over to the table where Tempe was sitting.

"Mind if I sit here?" she asked.

"Not at all," Tempe said as she grinned.

"Oh, I'm Tempe, by the way."

"I'm Marie," she introduced herself with a smile. "Nice to meet you. Are you new, too?"

"Nice to meet you too, Marie. And yep, I'm new. Just arrived on Saturday," Tempe replied.

"What do you think of our illustrious new school so far?" Tempe asked, sweeping her arm in a vague gesture to encompass the entire school. "Ran into anything out of the ordinary yet? I hear they had an attack by mutant snow monsters last term."

"The boy that lives next door to me can duplicate himself," Marie shared. "And apparently there used to be a girl here that looked exactly like me."

"Duplicate himself? Really? Wow," Tempe gushed. Just another thing to add to the list of things she was going to find fascinating about this school.

"Something tells me that you're not the only one that has or will ever have a doppelganger at this school. From what I can tell, the extraordinary has become ordinary here."

Marie smiled and nodded. "That's the impression I'm getting. And I'm just a normal girl from Mississippi, so this is all new to me. What about you? Do you have a special ability?"

"Nope. I'm about as normal as they come," Tempe replied.

"Except for the fact that I've been temporally displaced by 12 years. And I have sparkly toenails," Tempe finished as she wiggled her freshly painted gold toes.

She blushed. "Okay, that was kind of a lame thing to say."

"No it's not," Marie insisted, glancing at Tempe's feet. "They look very pretty."

She tilted her head thoughtfully. "Would you be interested in being a cheerleader? We had tryouts this weekend, but I'm sure we could add another person to the squad."

"Thanks," Tempe said, her cheeks still red.

"Cheerleader?" Tempe asked, incredulously. Flail, flail. She looks furtively around for an escape. Finding none, she turns back to Marie. "Um, thank you, but I think I'm going to have to pass on that. The very idea of being a cheerleader scares me beyond comprehension."

Marie shrugged. "I think it's fun. They're trying to get together a basketball team, too, if you play."

"I'm not exactly athletically inclined, but I wouldn't mind trying anyway," Tempe replied. Because basketball was much less scary than cheerleading.

"I'm not sure who's organizing that," Marie admitted. "But I'll let you know when I find out. Which cabin are you in?"

"I'm in Three-Toed Sloth B," Marie said. "I have no idea where they came up with these cabin names."

"Me neither," Tempe said. "And I'm not actually sure what a pangolin is."

"Hey, what workshops are you in?"

"I have writing this morning, astronomy tomorrow evening and fun & games on Friday. What about you?"

"Astronomy tomorrow, as well, and I had arts & crafts yesterday," Tempe answered.

"Great, then I'll see you tomorrow," Marie said, finishing her breakfast. "I need to scoot if I'm going to be on time for my workshop. Nice meeting you!"
