Principles of First Aid, Danger Shop, Morning, 5/23

Elliot is seated cross-legged on a table in the front of the Danger Shop, wearing a lab coat and looking only a little nervous. When most of the students have assembled, she begins.

"Hi, I'm Elliot Reid. You can call me Dr. Reid, or Elliot, or... just don't use the E.T. voice, or I will have to beat you senseless. And yes, it's a boy's name, I'm not a boy."

"We have a lot to cover if you guys want to be qualified for Red Cross certification at the end of the term. I'm handing out the syllabus, which I stole from Red Cross of Singapore. Because we only have so much time, I'm going to kind of skim a lot of this. I also have made up first aid kits for each of you; take them, use them, love them. If they get you in trouble, don't blame me."

"The basic idea of First Aid is to, you know, keep people from dying or becoming horribly disfigured on the spot. Now, if you don't know what you're doing, you end up hurting way more than you help. So first rule is, don't do anything until you have assessed the situation and called 911 if necessary. Even if you happen to be a doctor, you call 911. Got it?"

She glanced down at the syllabus.

"So anatomy is one of those things I'm going to skim. You have bodies. They have all kinds of funky things about them. If you want to know more, there's a good Web site for you to play with loaded on those computers over there."

"And now to the fun stuff." A little gleefully, she illuminated another section of the danger shop. Three small rooms came into view, each containing a Danger Shop-generated scene of chaos. "You guys have been divided into completely arbitrary teams. Each team should go to a scene, talk out what you're going to do if you want, and then each of you should demonstrate how you would react. I know it's early and it's summer, so don't wait for everybody if there are people missing from your group."

"And when you're done with that, come back and we will play with triangular bandages. They're useful, they're compact, and they make a really decent bikini if you're desperate."

[OOC: OCD is up. Play. The scenarios are like life-size dioramas; you can interact with them, but the people are just computer-generated models. Mod them as necessary.]

Greg walked over to look at the father, carefully sliding into the ditch crouching beside him.

He gingerly lifted the folds of the father's clothes with a pencil, and called, "Okay, we've got head trauma over here, but he's breathing. Um. As it were. I can't tell if anything else is broken...can we make a stretcher?"

Cally looked around. "Out of what? I mean, I'm no Professor from Little Buddy's Island. I need more than a couple coconuts to build things."

Walter, in the meantime, is trying to figure out how to extricate the crying child from its carseat. Those snaps are harder than you'd think, especially with a baby's weight on them.

Parker popped the trunk of the car to see if there was anything in there to help, like blankets and car chains. "Hang on, Gregerino. I think there's some stuff here that can work."

"We need to keep him flat," Greg called. "I can't tell if any bones are broken, y'know? He could have internal bleeding, too."

Parker dragged over the chains, and the blankets, then grimaced. "Okay. We need something flat... duh. The car seats. Hang on."

She went back to the car and unscrewed the back car seat, dragging the cushion over to Greg. "Now what?"

"Now we lift him out of the ditch and wait for help to arrive?" Greg proposed. "Carefully, of course."

"Right. And I'm remembering stuff about spinal cord injuries and other stuff, so-- all of us together? Less chance of something going wrong?" Parker moved down by the guy's feet, and looked around for Cally.

Cally bit her lip. "Sorry, Doctor Reid," she says, rubbing the back of her neck. "It's just... I mean, even though it isn't real, it's still kinda heavy, you know? I don't think I'm really ready for the life or death stuff yet."

"Alright. Thanks, Doctor Reid" Cally said. She took a deep breath and headed back over to the group.

Parker had found a blanket in the car trunk, and some chains. "Okay. I'm not sure if this will work. You're the construction expert-- ideas on how to make a stretcher out of this stuff?"

Re: Team A, Scenario 1

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-05-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Cally took a deep breath again. "Well, we have any duct tape? We could lay out a chain on each side of the blanket, fix them on, and try that?"

"Ooo. Yes. And the back car seat." After Parker dragged that out (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/874764.html?thread=41501452#t41501452), she went down to the ditch with Greg. "The seat, dragged on the blankets, with the chains? That make sense?"

"Great sense," Cally said, as she fumbled in her pocket and produced the swiss army knife she got from completing Shop Class. "I'll get right on it."

Which she did. She seemed a lot more confident, now that she was more concerned with stuff she understood rather than the actual medical emergency.

"Great. Thanks, Cally. Help us move the guy, and I think we've got two-thirds o this scenario fixed."
