Principles of First Aid, Danger Shop, Morning, 5/23

Elliot is seated cross-legged on a table in the front of the Danger Shop, wearing a lab coat and looking only a little nervous. When most of the students have assembled, she begins.

"Hi, I'm Elliot Reid. You can call me Dr. Reid, or Elliot, or... just don't use the E.T. voice, or I will have to beat you senseless. And yes, it's a boy's name, I'm not a boy."

"We have a lot to cover if you guys want to be qualified for Red Cross certification at the end of the term. I'm handing out the syllabus, which I stole from Red Cross of Singapore. Because we only have so much time, I'm going to kind of skim a lot of this. I also have made up first aid kits for each of you; take them, use them, love them. If they get you in trouble, don't blame me."

"The basic idea of First Aid is to, you know, keep people from dying or becoming horribly disfigured on the spot. Now, if you don't know what you're doing, you end up hurting way more than you help. So first rule is, don't do anything until you have assessed the situation and called 911 if necessary. Even if you happen to be a doctor, you call 911. Got it?"

She glanced down at the syllabus.

"So anatomy is one of those things I'm going to skim. You have bodies. They have all kinds of funky things about them. If you want to know more, there's a good Web site for you to play with loaded on those computers over there."

"And now to the fun stuff." A little gleefully, she illuminated another section of the danger shop. Three small rooms came into view, each containing a Danger Shop-generated scene of chaos. "You guys have been divided into completely arbitrary teams. Each team should go to a scene, talk out what you're going to do if you want, and then each of you should demonstrate how you would react. I know it's early and it's summer, so don't wait for everybody if there are people missing from your group."

"And when you're done with that, come back and we will play with triangular bandages. They're useful, they're compact, and they make a really decent bikini if you're desperate."

[OOC: OCD is up. Play. The scenarios are like life-size dioramas; you can interact with them, but the people are just computer-generated models. Mod them as necessary.]

Briat tied the bandage around his own face. "Are we allowed to bring in our own um, things into the scenario? Because a *handwave since mun knows nothing about plants* leaf will pretty much wake the dead." His voice might be a little muffled.

"The professor said to 'demonstrate how you would react' thus, I think your solution would count. Shall we try it?"

Briar shrugged and grabbed his mage's kit. After ruffling around in it for a few minutes he took out two small leaves and handed one to Peter. "Let's try it then." He went into the room.

"Just wave it under their nose then?" Peter asked, examining the leaf.

"Break it, and yeah, pretty much."

Watching Briar, Peter broke the leaf and started waving. He figured that if people did wake up, he could try to get them to leave the beach.

Seras watched Peter waving the leaf.

"That's going to wake them up?" she asked.

Peter shrugged. "Briar said it would just about wake the dead." Handing Seras half of his leaf, he said, "Apparently one waves it under the nose if you want to give it a try."

Seras nodded and went to work.

As she waved the leaf under each person's nose, she tried to figure out what sort of first aid they were going to need. Then something dawned on her.

"Oh! We forgot to call 911!" she said.

Peter looked at her questioningly. Or as questioningly as one can with a bandana over one's nose and mouth. "What's 911?"

Seras looked up.

Oh. Right. World War Two.

"It's a telephone service," she said, "You call it, tell them your emergency, where you are, and they tell you what to do and send an ambulance. I think Dr. Reid said that we were always supposed to call them..."

She bit her lip.

"Is this leaf thing working for you?"

"I see," said Peter though he didn't. "I suppose we probably should then."

He looked over at the people he had 'treated' with the leaf. They seemed to be moving a bit more than they had before. "I think so? Briar seemed pretty confident. And he's the plant mage."

Seras nodded.

Her 'patients' were beginning to stir as well.

"Right. You keep at it while I try to find a pay phone or something..."

"Very good then," Peter replied with a wave.

Seras dashed off, but it was a secluded beach, and there was no pay phone in sight.

She glanced around somewhat desperately, then noticed that the sleeping beach goers had brought bags and such with them.

Pushing back twinging feelings of guilt --it's not stealing if you're saving lives, Victoria-- she tore through them until she found a cell phone.

She made the call and then, grabbing her first aid bag, tore back to Peter.

"Good call," Peter punned with a straight face.

"What do you think we should do with them once they're awake," he asked gesturing at some of the treated sunbathers who were beginning to stand up and groan.

"Make them sit down, I think," said Seras flipping through her first aid book, "Or maybe grab some more of these triangle bandages for them? So they don't inhale more of whatever made them pass out?"

"And get them water to decrease dehydration."

Peter understood perhaps a third of what Elliot said so he nodded to her and took the leaf Briar had pulled out of his mage's kit.

Briar shrugged. "My mage's kit is always with me."
