There were *handwaved* announcements posted, announcing that the Workshop would be in the back of Sparky Repairs.

Agatha looked over the students she had. Ok, there were only two of them, but her smile was still a bit nervous.

“Hey guys. As you may or may not know, my name is Agatha Clay.” She smiled again. “You may call me Agatha though. Please write your names down on the attached attendance sheet, so I know who you guys are. Also, if you could tell me a bit about what sort of mechanical knowledge you already have, that would be cool.”

"Today we are going to spend the next few hours talking about what a Clock is. Please take a look at your handout and at this picture of a Peacock Clock. It is on display at the Hermitage in the Russian Federation.

To better understand a thing, you have to take the thing apart. In front of you is a variety of mechanical clocks. Take them apart, see what's inside.”

Agatha smiled again and handed them each a handout, an image and a box of clocks. Some were old, some were new and some were clearly made by Agatha herself.

John signs in ~~totally not limping for sympathy/guilt~~.

Archie signs in, a bit worried that his general lack of mechanical aptitude is going to be particularly evident in such a small class. Still, he gives Agatha a nervous smile, scrawls "Lt. Archie Kennedy" on the attendance sheet in rather large letters, and takes his handouts before sitting down in front of the clocks.

John dismantles clocks. He's good at it. Reassembly? Not as good. Hey, what's this extra part?

Agatha looked on with interest at John's progress. "So, what makes the clock work?"

"Gears. Springs. ~~Pentium V dual proccessor motherboard.~~ Gravity. And," he looked totally innocent, "the power of spare parts."

"Spare parts?" Agatha looke dat him questioningly as if waiting for an elaboration. "You are very right abotu the springs though."

John held upa small part. "I can't find where it went." The clock seems to be working well enough...

The clock looked likeit was working fine without the part. However, when agatha set the alarm and changed the time to makeit ring, John could see that without the spare part the little hammer never reached the little bell and thus the alarm was... silent. Agatha just smiled.

"In a well made clockwork mechanism, no part is extraneous. It is liek a perfect dance. No extra moves, everythign is both nescesary and elegantly beutiful."

"Sois thatit for this week? ~~do I have to open the shop on Wednesday?~~"

Agatha looked at hte time, and nodded. "Yes. Next week, you get to actaully do something." She brinned.

~~yes please? and she will coem in to tlak to you, to figure otu mondays~~

"Sweet. I'll see ya Monday. Er, Wednesday,since I gotta open the shop."

Rather like John, Archie isn't a bad hand at disassembling the clocks, but putting them back together is a daunting prospect. All those tiny bits.

Surrounded by tiny cogs, springs, and God only knows what all else, he stares at the table, completely perplexed.

Agatha comes over to see how he is doing. "So, Lt. Archie Kennedy, what have you found inside a clock?"

"Far too many parts," Archie said sheepishly. He held up a spring and stared at it, expectantly, as if it would tell him where it was supposed to go. "How does one get so many pieces to move with such precision?"

"Very very carefully" she smiled "Here let me show you" Agatha took the spring and carefully coiled it. "Here hold this tight. Do you feel it tryign to uncoil? That is a whole lot of power stored in there. It's what makes the clock go."

Archie held the coiled spring as directed, and nodded as he felt the resistance of it trying to uncoil against his fingers. Looking at the tiny gears on the table, he said, "Well, it wouldn't move a capstan and raise an anchor, but it doesn't take that much power to turn those gears, does it?"

"No it doesn't. But if you the spring was released all at once, the gears would turn really fast and then stop. Not a very useful clock." She pulled out several gears and hooked the mup to the spring, laying hte whole thing carefully down and letting go. the spring struggled against hted gears but they resisted. As a result everythign moved slowly. "If this gets calibrated just right, this gear turns one click a second."

It's difficult to use fine motor skills when you're hurt from trying to dodge an over-active Erector set spider trying to kill you, piloted by your boss.

She was totally making it go with her mind powerz. And she so started it.

John's name is not DUrden. By the way, can he borrow that glycol over there?

oh yeah iwatche abit of the movie and ran away. creepy and scary in a way i dislike.

Fine. JOhn will then proceed to make an Evil!Terminator!C3-PO out of spare parts before being called away to teh dirt bike races.

Yeah, very creepy. So it's a bad idea for John and Durden to make soap? bwahahaha
