Teamwork Training and Combat Skills; Thursday, Second Period [10/03].

"Last week," said Ignis, as class got started, and they were still in the Danger Shop, but it looked far more like a war debriefing room than a training room that week, "we discussed communication and demonstrate the ease at which it could easily breakdown, and we certainly hope that the playful nature in which we approached the topic did not distract from the importance inherent in such breakdowns when they occur. But what if the meaning of a message was intentionally obfuscated with the attempt to keep the information therein clandestine and confidential while still clear and understandable to those intended to receive it?"

"Codes," Gladio translated helpfully with a grin. "Today, we're talking about codes."

"Now, clearly," Ignis continued, "written correspondence that follows a certain cipher is the most common form of coded message, as it can be easily created, easily understood, and easily discarded. Of course," he smile went a little tight here, "that might not always be an option, though I have certainly found a knowledge of Braille or similar tactile languages to be incredibly helpful, even when not dealing strictly with those who cannot read standard writing. Even creating your own version to throw off the chance that your enemy may be familiar enough to break your code can be quite helpful. Speaking in a variety of agree-upon phrases and the strategic use of coded words that bear significant meaning can also be helpful."

"Sometimes codes can even be other things not written or said in messages, too!" Prompto offered. "Like, for example, let's say a ribbon tied around a certain tree in a certain color could mean something like 'okay to proceed' or 'danger!' or 'proceed with caution'. Flags are also big on this, as well as gestures, or little marks and sigils. Again," his grin was a little rueful as he gestured toward Ignis, "there are issues with visual cues sometimes, but not always. Audio cues like certain sounds can be helpful, too, or just the placement of certain objects. Like, if the cat statue is in a certain position, that's bad news! Something like that."

"Needless to say," Ignis added, "coded messages can take on a wide variety of forms and shapes, from your classic scrambling of an alphabet, to a series of sounds, or even something as particular as, oh, I don't know," the faint grin suggested he did know, actually, "choosing to pair a certain wine with a certain food that, to those in the know, sends a very clear message indeed."

"And that," said Gladio, with an air of conclusion that would be a little misleading, "is the key to a good code: making sure everyone who needs to now knows it, and that no one who shouldn't know doesn't. So today, we're going to go over a little bit about different methods of codes and ciphers and some ideas for making some to sort of get your brain working, and then we're going to see about making your own secret messages and seeing who can decipher them."

Nell (who is much smarter than her player) developed an easy to write, but hard to break code which said something about this class being a lot of fun.

"I know there's a code that's pretty much unbreakable unless you have the exact right key," Arden said quietly as she started cutting out sections on a piece of paper. "That's the Book Code. Which, um, isn't this one," she added, gesturing to her arts and crafts.

Gladio is definitely the type who would try and make a code based on grunts, which he will insist is way better than a code based on chocobo squawks, Prompto.

Nell found a quiet spot to wait while Gladio finished up with Prompto, Ignis, and anyone else in the class who might need him.

And, really, Nell wouldn't have to wait long, because anything he needed to do with Prompto and Ignis could wait, and he suspected mostly anything else anyone in class needed from him he could probably foist onto Prompto or Ignis, so he was eventually breaking away to drift over with a grin.

"I think," he offered, "you might be better at this code stuff than me."

"Yeah, if you want," Gladio said with a huff of a laugh, "but then you can't blame me if those notes are telling me to do something that then doesn't get done. Not my fault. Couldn't break the code."

Nell laughed and nudged him. "I bet if they were notes about certain things you'd find a way to decode them."

She grinned up at him, then let out a breath. "Parent's Weekend is almost here again. I always hated it - well, hate's too strong a word. I really disliked it. I always knew no one was coming - or if they did it would be horrible. Maybe I should start going away on these weekends."

The grin on Gladio's face softened significantly at that, sympathetic and understanding, and he sort of reached over an arm to pull Nell into a little bit of a hug. With an extra squeeze for comfort. "We still could," he offered, "if you want. Not like anyone's going to be showing up for me, either. And if any parents actually do want to talk to their student's teachers, Iggy and Prompto can probably handle it. Nice thing about co-teachers, I guess."

As Nell nestled, Gladio's hand rubbed her arm a little, just to add to the comforting of it all that little bit extra. "Not really anything in particular coming to mind," he admitted. "Maybe I should put something like that together, a list of places to hit up. But I mean, my preferences are pretty simple. Straightforward. Good camping, good views, good company."

"That sounds good," Nell said, though it was more that the closeness and his touch felt good. Not that she wasn't in agreement with the rest. "Maybe we can go up into the woods in New England. Watch the leaves change."

"Seems a little rude, doesn't it?" Gladio asked, unable to help himself, with a little chuckle as he lean turned into a sort of joking nudge. "You'd think they'd want some privacy for something like that. Wouldn't you?"

He, obviously, wasn't too concerned, but...

Gladio's next chuckle was a little shameless as his shoulders squared, broadening his chest confidently. "Well, you know my philosophy," he said. "If you got it, might as well flaunt it. But, alright, then. If they wanna flaunt, let's make sure it doesn't go to waste. Maybe we can look into some nice places to stay over the weekend and head out bright and early tomorrow morning before everyone sweeps in?"

Surely, nothing would happen this weekend that would throw a pretty big wrench in these plans or anything!

My friend and I developed a cool code in junior high - well, several of them. We'd write notes and pass them to each other and have to decipher whatever new code the other made. It also assured that if we got caught passing notes in class the teachers would never know what we'd written.
