Food Field Trips, Friday 9/20 2nd Period

Another Friday and another trip to Portalocity for the Food Field Trips class.

“Candy today,” Stark said. “Jelly beans, specifically. I know they get eaten more around Easter but they’re good any time.”

There was probably a student enthusiastically agreeing with him right this moment.

“We’ll be going to the Jelly Belly factory in Fairfield, CA. There’s a factory tour and ‘museum experience’ and a train to ride and of course plenty of candy to eat. If everyone’s here, and ready, let’s go, shall we?”

Full of beans!

Welcome to 1 Jelly Belly Lane in Fairfield, CA. You can take a self-guided tour above the factory floor, stopping to enjoy some interactive and educational exhibits along the way.

Maybe you’d like to check out the art gallery with its mosaics made up of jelly beans.

Maybe you want to buy all the jelly beans, even the Belly Flops, in the store. Or maybe some swag. You can also purchase items in the chocolate shoppe.

There’s also a cafe serving both breakfast and lunch. Some items are even bean shaped!
If you’re old enough you can even spend some time enjoying a chocolate and wine tasting experience. If you’re not old enough, or if you don’t have a fake ID, or you just don’t want wine, there is a non-alcoholic experience available.

He’s here for that. Mostly he’s here for the candy but he’s also here to talk if needed.

Friday. Finally.

You know what's obnoxious? When a website detects you're in a different country and so automatically redirects you to the "local" page. Ummm there was a reason I was on .com, you know.

A jellybean factory?? And museum???

Graham could not wait to tell Triumph all about today's field trip! And to try ALL the jellybeans! And ask a million excitable questions to all the poor staff members just trying to do their job.

Did one of those questions involve asking if being entirely submerged in jellybeans was on the table? Maaaaybeeee....

You know what kind of suckered? Remembering only after you decided to take the jellybean inspired wine tasting that the person you planned to torture with the idea of it couldn't even see the pictures you took.

Whatever. Guess she'd have to just fill his inbox with voice messages instead. Ha ha ha, take that, Ignis.

Charlie Gale

"Graham! Dude! We could totally use your magical cloak to take back like tons of jellybeans!" Charlie might be a little too excited about this prospect.

Steven Grant

"Oh, believe me," Graham, beaming, laughed as he swung that magical cloak in question in a way that handily depositiled a small pile of jelly beans into his waiting palm to show Charlie, "i am already ten steps ahead of you there!"

He plucked one out of the pile to pop into his mouth, and then handed it out for Charlie to take one,too.

"Isn't this place incredible? I am definitely going to have to come back sometime!"

Charlie took a blue one and popped it in her mouth. "Delicious! And just say the word and I can Walk us here whenever we want!"

Rude of it.

You don't want all maple jelly beans!

"Oh, no," Graham chuckled, popping another bean into his mouth, "don't tell me that! Then I might just come here all the time!

"I should go see, though," he mused,"what their pet-slash-mighty steeds policy is. Triumph has got to see this place with his own eyes!"

Raiden

"I mean I could always make Triumph invisible..." Charlie mused, "but that wouldn't stop people from bumping into him - or him from bumping into things."

After checking with the staff, it was determined that while the jelly beans did not contain actual gelatin, the coating used did contain other animal products.
Alas.

There were, however, just enough vegan-friendly chocolate items on offer at the wine pairing to make a slightly modified version of the experience worth it, so guess where Watts was headed to, tugging Steven ~~who was modded with permission~~ along with him?

"And he will bump into things," Graham asserted with the utmost certainty and fondness. "And get into things. It's probably best to just check in with someone to see if it's okay. Maybe we can even arrange some sort of special capybara tour, just for him! He'd love that, and then we wouldn't have to worry so much about breaking any rules if they were already making an agreed-upon exception to them!"

Charlie was a little skeptical about them making a special capybara tour, but she wasn't about to shoot it down. "And if not we can make him his own tour with big pictures and some jellybeans!"

Well, you never knew until you asked! And Graham was a knight now, so he needed to start approaching things with more responsibility and consideration! And sneaking an invisible Triumph into a jelly beans factory didn't exactly sound like very knight-like behavior. Even if it did also sound pretty amazing.

"Definitely!" It was much easier to agree with that. "He's going to lose his mind over all these different jellybeans! I don't think He'll mind too much if he's got those to soothe the pain of having missed out."

Steven went along gladly, afterwards putting in a preference for looking at the art. Which he enjoyed even if some of the pictures of things like American presidents didn't do much for him as subjects. He could still admire the cleverness involved in putting the pictures together.

Well, if Stark preferred the candy to talking to Summer, she could, like, totally leave him to it, but she had a feeling he wouldn't be too against a little bit of a distraction.

Especially when it involved candy! Grinning, she stepped up to Stark and held out her hand, on which sat a single pink jelly bean.

"If you can guess which flavor this is," she informed him, "without trying it first, I'll give you a prize."

There were no foods, not even cupcakes, that Stark preferred to talking to Summer.

"Do I get more than one guess?" he asked. "And what happens if I don't guess correctly? Or do I just have to guess and not get it right at all?"

Summer shook her head. "Only one guess," she informed him staunchly. "Nothing happens if you don't guess, except you don't get the prize or the jelly bean. The jelly bean is not the prize. I may accept one question for a hint, but only if I feel it's a good question and the answer doesn't give too much away."

"I'd hate to lose out on a prize from you," Stark said.

Oh look, now he was going to overthink this. "I'd guess strawberry, but I think that is too obvious." Or maybe it was meant to be obvious. He didn't know!

"It probably isn't something gross after all of the grossness earlier but I suppose it could be ham since there was ham in more than one thing for your class but I hope they don't make ham flavor ones." But now he was worried. "I'm sure it isn't fly ice cream flavored but it could be strawberry ice cream but oh...maybe it's meant to taste like a pie. Or maybe like a drink?"

He frowned. He could go on like this for ages.

"Is it flavored like something you or I make?"

And Summer looked absolutely delighted as she watched with shining eyes and her hand still held out with the single jelly bean nestled on its open palm as Stark went and made this way more complicated and difficult for himself than it ever needed to be.

Maybe she was feeling generous. Maybe she felt he was earning it with all those logical knots he was tying for himself. Maybe she just liked him. But she decided she was going to answer that question.

"No."

Okay, maybe she just felt that the answer to the question was only going to make it even harder.

Mwa ha ha.

Maybe it was strawberry then! But maybe it wasn't. Maybe it was flavored like something that wasn't pink at all. Or something horrible that was pink. Like that medicine for digestive troubles, for example.

But maybe it was something nice that was pink that they didn't make. Pink lemonade, maybe.

"I want to say strawberry," Stark said after far too long. "But I'm not sure. Because it could be something else entirely it could be...bubblegum?"

He wasn't sure where the thought had come from but now it was out there.

And then Summer grinned, a proud sort of grin, and she moved the jelly bean in her hand to her fingers so that, when she put it to Stark's lips so that he could eat it and taste not only her kiss but the validation that he'd guessed exactly right with bubble gum, yes.

Stark managed a very soft press of his lips to her fingertips as he accepted the candy but once her lips were there instead he put much more into that kiss.

"That was a very good prize."

That deserved another, softer kiss.

"I'm very glad I got it right."

"I knew you'd like it," Summer said, grinning triumphantly, and then she had to laugh. "I'm honestly pretty impressed you managed to get it, too! I was going to really throw you through a loop and do one of the strawberry milk tea boba ones, but I decided to be nice, especially after my class."

Also, it was hard to find an isolated picture of that one by itself for reference!

"That would have been cheating!"

It would have been no such thing. He knew it.

"But I never would have guessed that. Not even if I'd thought all day. I don't even know why I thought of bubblegum it just... seemed like it might be right? Because it was a little odd and not really food but pink..."

"And if we take a bunch of pictures I can charm them up into big sort of hologram like things so he can get the feeling of being there!" Charlie was all about going with the flow.
