Food & Cultural Appreciation, Tuesday Third Period

"All right, everybody," Raiden said once his students had gathered, "I hope everyone got my message about weather and dressed accordingly, because it will be hot and rainy where we're going today: Singapore. We'll be inside for most of the class, but we'll walk a few blocks to get there so you can get a feel for the city, so I hope everyone brought umbrellas!

"Singapore, for those of you who aren't familiar, is an island nation off the southern tip of the Malay peninsula in Asia. Singapore has one main island, which has one of the highest population densities on Earth, and as a result of its location bordering several different maritime areas and its history of British rule before gaining independence, it's a very multicultural society...which means it has a lot of different influences in its food: Chinese, Malaysian, Indian, Indonesian...there's just a lot of good stuff going on here." One might notice that he did not mention the British when talking about good influences on the food.

"Today we're going to the Chinatown Complex Food Centre, which is a sort of food court of "hawker stalls" each selling whatever they make best. You can get what you want and then find a table to try it at, and then go try something different! There are all sorts of options, from chicken rice, the unofficial national dish of Singapore, to noodle dishes like laksa, delicious dumplings like xiao long bao, seafood like chili crab, or Indonesian satay...really those are just the tip of the iceberg. On the sweeter things, I should note that durian is very popular here, and it's, um...well, you either love it or you hate it. If you do try anything with durian, it's important to note that you won't be able to bring it back with you due to Portalocity restrictions on the smell."

Dear gods, the smell.

"Anyway, enough talking! Let's head through the portal and get to eating! No guide this week, so you can choose your own adventure, but if you're not sure where to start just ask and I can help point you to some good options!"

Zounds! Graham was definitely suffering from touch of choice paralyzation as he considered everything around him. He wanted to try all of it, and he was going to try his best to do that, but he almost didn't know where to--

--dumplings. Yeah, no. He had to go with dumplings first!

Everything. That's what Charlie wanted to try. Everything.

"Hey, Graham," she called. "How about you start at that end and I'll start down there and we'll meet in the middle and share!"

"Oooh, divide and conquer!" said Graham, with an approving grin as his hand sliced through the air and then balled into a fist of victory. "Good idea! And then if there's time, we can switch sides and see if there's anything the other one missed!"

"Absolutely! Let's rock and roll!" Charlie immediately headed for her end to start collecting.

Lydia certainly hoped the hawker stalls had forks available, as she had not the first clue how to use chopsticks and everything smelled delicious.

Except the durian.

Arden had to laugh when the carrot cake was neither cake nor had carrots in it, but there was something with the way the soy interacted with the chicken that almost made it taste carroty. The pepper crab was also a must have and obviously the satay, and it was something of personal quest to try as many different dumplings as possible...

The hardest part was trying not to accidentally eat anything with chicken or duck in it, honestly.

Oh, and keeping a running tally of which things were 'Lydia safe,' considering her spice tolerance.

Belle was a bit overwhelmed by the sights and sounds and smells at first.

As soon as she got around to tasting she'd be overwhelmed by those as well.

But there were just so many noodles to try!
