First Aid: Extreme Edition, Monday Fifth Period

"Today we're going to talk about drugs," Don told his students.

"Now, as I said last week, I am not the fun police. I'm not making any moral judgments on the circumstances you might find yourself taking care of someone who's under the influence of some kind of, shall we say, substance. I am, however, going to tell you the first and most important rule of misadventure, so please listen carefully." He paused for effect, then told the class, "Tell the cops nothing. Tell the EMTs everything." After another pause, he asked, "You got that? Don't get me wrong, there are situations where you need cops, but in many other situations the cops are not your friends." That was right. Don Blake said ACAB. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law, and all that. Your friendly neighborhood paramedic, on the other hand, needs to know exactly what you did so they can save your life, and also so they don't accidentally do something that could kill you.

"First, we're gonna talk about roofies, because unfortunately that is...a thing we need to talk about. For anyone who might be unaware 'getting roofied' is a slang term for someone slipping a drug, usually rohypnol, which is colorless and tasteless, into someone's drink without their awareness, usually with the intention of having sexual relations with them while their inhibitions are impaired and they are not capable of meaningful consent. Or maybe to kidnap them and hold them hostage like we talked about last week. You never know." In his universe, at least. "Your best protection against the kind of assholes who would do that is to go out with people you trust, never leave your drink unattended, and not accept drinks from people you don't trust. If you suspect that someone has been roofied--say, they only had one or two drinks and they seem wasted--you should get them to a safe place and keep an eye on them. Watch out for things like loss of consciousness, dizziness, difficulty moving, or nausea and vomiting. And even if your friend hasn't been roofied and is just really drunk, if some guy won't leave them alone it's your job as a friend to tell that guy to fuck off, all right?

"Next, for drugs in general, whether someone has consumed a substance willingly or not, for the most part you just need to wait for them to come out of it. Let them sleep it off or whatever. But there are always the possibility of a 'bad trip,'" he was square enough that he did air quotes on that, "or an overdose. A bad trip is a bad reaction to a drug. Some people, for example, smoke a little bit of weed and they have a panic attack...which is pretty bad on its own, but it can be a lot more serious than that. If you think someone is having a bad reaction to a drug, you should call 911 right away." He went through some of the things to watch out for in various possible scenarios, then asked the class, "Are there any questions?" Had he scared you all off substances?
