Lana looked them all over as they arrived, then passed out sunscreen. "Put this on before we leave, please. Also I have extra sunglasses, should you not have your own. And folding chairs, unless you don't mind getting wet or have your own means of preventing that."

She waited until they were done; if anybody chose not to, they'd be getting a very disapproving look. Then she led them through the portal.

And into the sky, to all appearances. They were surrounded by bright sunlight and blue sky.

"Today we're experiencing Salar de Uyuni. We're over 3,600 kilometers above sea level. There's less atmosphere between us and the sun here, so keep that sunscreen on and reapply it if you feel any doubt as to its level of protection. And be careful how hard you exert yourself. We're not nearly as high as Everest here, but it's high enough to be a potential issue."

She gestured around them. "This is a salt flat over ten thousand square kilometers large, and over that space its variation in elevation is under one meter. It's used to calibrate measuring equipment on satellites because of its consistency and reflectivity.

"I may have cheated with the portal a bit to get us here after it's rained. And since I was doing that, I went with just before sunset, so we should have time to see some fairly spectacular colour."

Then she was just going to let you all experience it. She might meditate. There were chairs if you didn't want to sit in the water, though it's only a thin layer.

Kamala settled down in one of the chairs with a squishy she had brought with her and watched the sunset.

She had no idea such a place existed and just wanted to marvel in the moment.

After liberally slathering herself in sunscreen, Eleanor drifted over to a chair next to Kamala and gestured toward it.

"This seat taken?" she asked.

"Well," said Eleanor, with a faintly wry grin as she sat down, "I'm going to take it anyway. But I promise, if a girl like me who isn't just me shows up, I'll give it up to her."

"Well if a girl like you shows up I.... I'm going to stop there because I'm only going to make it more confusing," Kamala said with a giggle. "That's your seat. Anyone who tries to take it from you has to go through me."

Kamala's "Tough Girl" persona could use some work.

Maybe. True. But Eleanor still appreciated it, with a soft, gentle smile and a shift in her chair to make it clear that anyone who did try to take it would probably have to take her along with it, because she wasn't moving.

"Thanks, Kam," she said, then sighed a little as she just sort of settled and enjoyed the view.

"This place is really something, isn't it?"

“Beautiful. Simply beautiful,” Kamala said settling in. “I’m so glad Arden told me to take this class.”

Too bad she wasn’t here to enjoy it.

Kamala looked at the phone and frowned. Kamala knew that the reason they weren't in class was not probably a good thing. Like they finally realized their feelings for each other and had to go... do fun things.

So Kamala texted back:

Everything ok? You guys didn't get bit by gremlins or get inhabited by your future selves again, did you?

After talking to Lana she followed it up with another text. Prof. B said it’s cool to miss today but to look up pictures of Salar De Uyuni to make up for it. It’s GORGEOUS!

Lydia had brought her parasol and, of course, liberally partaken of the sunscreen, although she was a little too concerned about the absences from the class to fully appreciate the views. She hoped Arden was all right.

"Uh, Professor B?" Kamala said coming up to Lana. "It looks like Arden and Cal aren't going to make it to class today. Do they need to do any extra homework to make it up?"

Was Kamala hoping that the assignment would be for the two of them to go to a romantic destination and finally admit they have feelings for each other? Yes. But that was a dismal hope.

“I think so? One of them probably has an issue and they always need the other to talk it out. They’re very close,” Kamala explained as best she could without knowing the exact details.

Lana nodded. Privately, she thought that any Jedi dealing with feelings was a good thing, so she wasn't going to begrudge them this.

"Tell them to let me know if I can help," she said. "Otherwise, I'll see them next week."
