Hitting Things With Big, Sharp Sticks; Friday, Third Period [07/19].

"Last week," Gladio said, "we talked about a lot of the basics of sword work, had some time to sort of play around with some different sizes and styles to get a feel for it, and also try a few standard moves and stances. Now, we're going to put some of that together with a few basic fighting techniques against each other.

"Now, we've got a really wide range of experience and skills in this class, so some of this is going to be really rudimentary for some of you guys, but I still want you to really focus on it and treat it like it's a new skill for the first time. A lot of times, when we're doing something often, we lose track of some of the mechanics on those little things that we believe to be second-nature by now. Really focusing on them is a good way to sharpen thing back up and fix any little bad habits that may have been developing in the meantime. And if you haven't done it in a while, it's a great way to bring those good habits back. And once I go over the instructions, I want you to find a partner and give it a try. We've an uneven number, so I'll be happy to jump in there myself. Try to find someone who matches closely to your own experience level, though. I've no doubt you more experienced swordsmen'll help out our newbies, but I don't want anyone feeling too overwhelmed, and I want this to be a collective learning experience, you know?

"So, today, we're going to learn about a simple overhead strike from above, the defensive tactic to counter it. Then, a counter to the counter, and then two different methods of a strike to perform if your opponent, instead of countering your initial attack, takes a defensive maneuver instead.

"We'll go over the techniques, practice some of the moves on your own as I lead you through them, and then partner up and try to recreate them, taking turns on who has the first attack. If you start to feel you've got it down pretty well, feel free to try other approaches if your sparring partner is comfortable with that, otherwise...practice makes perfect. It might be boring and repetitive, but it's helpful in building up muscles and muscle memory so that, in the moment of a real attack, you can think fast and let your body to most of the work on its own."

"I was always taught that the best thing I could do in any fight was find a way to run away as soon and as fast as I could," Arden said, brows drawing together as she thought. "Keep them from hurting me as much as I could and then run away the second I found a way out."

"Okay, let's think about that," Gray said. "You're not wrong that running away isn't a bad strategy for a noncombatant, but let's say I'm coming at you with a sword, and I'm not me, I'm some other guy where you don't know already that you've just got to hold out for maybe seven minutes and then Sloth'll decide that's enough physical activity for today and I'll be snoring." He did not tell her how long seven minutes felt like when you were fighting for your life. Hopefully she wouldn't learn any time soon, either.

"So now you're defending yourself--" He demonstrated by moving fluidly through a few defensive forms, like he was blocking someone's attacks, "--and you're looking for an opportunity to run at the same time. So you're distracted. All of your attention isn't on the fight. That's bad. And what happens when you get that chance to run? If he's committed at all, he's gonna come after you. But he can't come after you if he's dead." A beat as Gray remembered he was dealing with a civilian here. "Incapacitated. Are you more comfortable with 'incapacitated?'" And then he shrugged and said, "At least, that's how I was taught. But we can work on defense first! You do need to learn both, really."

Arden raised an eyebrow at him. "You really think I'm scared of the word killed?" she asked.

Sure, that might be different if she was ever in the process of actually killing someone, but murder was pretty much baked into her wholeass society.

"Getting precious about wording doesn't change what happens," she added.

Better learn offense. Callista's voice in her head; an imaginary Callista, made up of all her fears and anxieties. No one is going to save you if you're stupid enough to get caught. We told you that a thousand times.

Arden grit her teeth together. "Defense first," she says. "And then we swap."

Gray thought that it was different when you were doing the killing, especially the first time, but it wasn't worth arguing about now. "Okay," he said, taking the opening position for the overhand strike Mr. Amicitia had shown them. "Get ready."

Arden picks her sword up, too. "I don't believe people can keep swords up like this for more than a few minutes," she muttered.

Definitely going to need to get to weight training.

"Well, these are bigger than normal," Gray pointed out. He really hoped Mr. Amicitia wasn't compensating for something. "But even regular swords are hard to handle for more than a few minutes." Not dirty. "It takes practice. I started out when I was eight with a little bitty wooden practice sword, and then I worked my way up as I grew."

And then he stopped growing and everyone else kept going, because they were rude.

Arden was planning on starting a vendetta against the very tall. Gray could help.

"Why didn't we start with little bitty wooden practice swords?" Arden asked. "Instead of leaping in with super gi-huge-ic metal ones."

More yoga. More running with Kamala. More working out.

"I have some theories, but...I hope I'm wrong." For Ms. Ingram's sake, if nothing else. "Now, come on. Sword up."

With a purely internal sigh because nobody was making Arden do this but Arden and acting like a little baby wasn't going to help her get good, Arden raised her sword to defend.

RIP arms.

Okay, Gray was gonna slow this way down for you, Arden. Like, half speed (Possibly still too fast? He didn't know.) and just telegraphing the shit out of this strike.

And Arden was just gonna put her sword in the way to block his sword. She wasn't even attempting the part where she was supposed to hit him in the face with the defensive block; if she managed to stop his sword from hitting her, she'd be happy.
