Delicious in Dungeon, Tuesday, Period 6

"So, as you know, we've been practicin' cookin' here in the Danger Shop, but then eatin' the real things I prepared beforehand, but the point of the class is for you get a handle on preparin' things for real. And while I think you could all handle the dungeon okay, there's just not time for us to get there, have you hunt and harvest everythin', and then still cook it all in an hour. So I've hunted and gathered for you to make sure you'd have proper ingredients. However, I wasn't gonna collect so much that everyone could have their pick of anythin', because that would just lead to a lot of--" Well, he couldn't say food waste, not with Raiden there "--unexpected pressure on a coupla different parts of the dungeon. So, everybody's gonna draw lots. Your lot will tell you whether you get the chicken or the snake half of the basilisk, which is the center of today's dish, and two other dungeon ingredients. Get into the dungeon, hunt, harvest, and prep your ingredients, and then exit the sim and get to the kitchens that'll have the prepared ingredients you were given. Use those and anything else you can find in the kitchen area to make us something delicious!"

Kamala set off to find... well whatever she could. Luckily having hard light powers meant she could pummel monsters from a distance without getting too roughed up.

Kamala first cleaned the mushrooms, taking off the 3 inches or so of the outside as it looked yucky but she kept the feet. From the Shadowtail she cleaned up some of the fruit from it and reserved some of the gelatin. The chicken part she plucked the features off and cleaned out the entrails before separating the legs and breasts.

After prepping the ingredients, Kamala went to the pantry and picked up some bread, butter and cockatrice eggs.

Toasting the bread slices first she crushed it into breadcrumbs. She then dipped the chicken in the beaten eggs and dredged it in the breadcrumbs. Using the butter she first sauteed the mushrooms followed by chicken strips which she fried to a golden brown. Using the gelatin from the Shadow tail she added it to the pan to create a pan sauce along with the mushrooms, chicken and used the fruit to add a dash of acid to the dish.

Viola! Chicken and mushrooms in Shadowtail sauce.

Chicken? Probably overdone.

Kamala stood in a line with the other competitors. In her mind she knows she did well today despite her background and struggles in the class.

"Chefs Senshi, today I used the ingredients today to make a flavor dish. It's Chicken and mushrooms in Shadowtail sauce. I used all the main ingredients with just a few items for the pantry to help reshape truly highlight the main ingredients."

Aw. Raiden had been kind of hoping for the chicken, because snake was always so damn lean. But it was fine, he could work with it. He had a battle plan.

Raiden set off, sword in hand, to go kill him some ingredients. If his expression was kind of grim, well, this was not his favorite part.

That was obviously the eating.

Raiden whistled while he peeled and diced his mandrake root and skinned the snake half of the basilisk with an efficiency not unlike turning a sock inside out.

Raiden took some flour, milk, and basilisk eggs from the pantry. He dredged the snake filets and pan-fried them, then made a gravy in the pan while he boiled the mandrake roots and betan nuts together before mashing them together, which he was hoping would balance out the mandrake's bitterness. If not, he had a Plan B which involved adding a shit ton of cheese to the mash. Cheese would fix a multitude of culinary sins. Finally, he wiped out the pan he'd used for the snake and gravy, added a fresh drizzle of oil, and sauteed the mandrake leaves with some garlic.

"So what we have today is a chicken-fried snake--" (Get it?) "--with mashed mandrake roots and betan nuts, and greens on the side. I hope you enjoy it." Ray, buddy, why are you nervous?

"You have to be really careful with reptiles, because the meat is so lean. It can dry out and turn tough on you really quickly. If I'd had more time I would have marinated it in something like buttermilk for twenty-four hours, or turned it into a sausage with fat from another animal, but cooking it quickly, with that crust to keep the juices from escaping, is also a good option," Raiden explained. "You'll see fried alligator bites on menus down south of here."

“When I was little, my parents got really ill and could barely get out of bed,” Kamala said getting misty- eyed at the memory. “So my brother only knew how to cook this one meal and we had it for a week. But instead of basilisks, walking mushrooms and killer plants it was just chickens, mushrooms and cream of chicken soup. I thought my brother was the best cook ever so I’m glad I could share it with you.”

Given more time, Hannibal might have opted to fight the basilisk fairly, but as it was, he was not above using a rifle. Sorry, everybody's ears.

It'd work for the scorpion, too. Honestly, the meeroak took more time to harvest, since that required a knife and some time up close.

Hannibal wouldn't have gotten far if he couldn't remember how to properly prepare his food. He was saving some snake scales and vines and the scorpion claws, though. Presentation was important!

Hannibal might not have time to make proper snake soup, but he could absolutely make a stir fry with ginger, soy, some of the walking mushrooms, and meeroak leaves. It got put into a bowl ringed with the scales, some mushroom gill threads, and bits of vine.

The scorpion meat was getting cooked up into a savory jelly with the meeroak gelatin and some vegetables, a riff on kholodets, placed onto a plate framed by the two large claws, with the stinger hanging over it.

Hannibal nodded to Senshi as he presented his food. "Basilisk snake stir fry styled after Chinese snake soup, with mushroom and meeroak leaves, and scorpion meeroak aspic."

"Oh, for sure," Raiden told him. "I've got six brothers to keep fed, and we're all active males--well, except for Gray--plus I've got Gluttony to deal with. We haven't always had access to supermarkets or whatever. Sometimes you've gotta work with whatever the hell you've got. Sometimes that's, 'Okay, I've got a dead cobra and some leaves, how do I make this into dinner for seven people?' Although I'd rather a stocked pantry any day, of course."

Look, there were reasons he liked Summer.

"Thank you." Hannibal gave him a pleased little smile. "I enjoy presentation. The scorpion is a separate preparation. I thought it would better shine this way than mixed with the basilisk. Generally where I come from, scorpion is fried, but they are also small enough to be only a bite or two, so I had to find another recipe, and I'm fond of this one, though it is usually made with fish and pork."
