Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Whoever worked the weather magic around here had done an excellent job to make sure things were nice outside for all the new (and old) residents of Fandom. It was warm and sunny, but not so humid that people would melt. There was plenty of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, places to sit in the shade, and more than enough nametags to go around. It was time to celebrate the start of the summer!

"Oh, yes, I didn't think you meant anything other than 'and' with those," Arden assured him. "Besides, I haven't even thought up what we might even do yet, so it's not like I have any toes to be stepped on anyway."

"Once we had the idea it made sense to wait until after, well, today," Steven said, gesturing to the welcome picnic. "Give it the best shot of getting any new arrivals in. He and I will still have to figure out the details once he's ~~home~~ better. But we was very excited about the idea, I can tell you that."

Marc had no comment. In that moment or about get togethers in general.

Arden nodded. "After today and maybe a few more days to let everybody get settled. Maybe something to celebrate the end of the first week of classes?"

"I'll chat with Llewellyn, see what he thinks," Steven said. "Then perhaps check with everyone else if there's a day that works. Hopefully we can have as many as possible. I know it's hard finding something that works for everyone but we can do our best to avoid pitfalls, any other events that might be going on."

But what were the odds that another party and subsequent island event would be happening so soon after the last event? Had to be pretty small, right?

Basically nil! How even could that happen?

"And even if it doesn't line up perfectly with any specific event or thing, it'll still be nice."

"And the start of a new tradition, perhaps?" Steven suggested. "It's rather silly we haven't had you all over yet. Really just with one thing and another we didn't get around to it. So we do it, get the first gathering out of the way, then there can be more to come. Hopefully make it less of an impact if someone's schedule doesn't work."

"If it becomes a kind of regular thing, then nobody has to worry that they can't make this one, because there's always next month's or whatnot," Arden agreed. "That sounds like a great idea, Steven."

And, right! She hadn't seen him so she hadn't been able to say. "Also, looks like I'm gonna be your favorite new broadcaster," she said, smile a little wistful. "Graham won the tournament, which is awesome for him, but that means he's staying in Daventry for training."

"Oh," Steven said. He was disappointed, he couldn't lie. But it was good news for Arden's rankings to be certain. "Well our loss is Daventry's gain, isn't it? Good for him. And lucky for us that you'll still be doing radio. Do you know the schedule yet? Will you still be doing Monday's news?"

"Unsure yet, but I've asked to stay on recapping Mondays, yeah," Arden said. She gave Steven a sideways smile, completely understanding his reaction. "It's hard, right?" she checked. "Balancing how much a bummer it is for us with how great it is for him?"

"It is," Steven said. He gave her a not at all serious look, "You'll just have to step up your wordplay now. There's a void that needs filling."

"Oh goddess, Steven," Arden groaned. "It's like a cultural thing over there. Just...all puns all the time."

Also, she would not. She was going to start saying Maaaaagpiiiiiie Empoooooriuuuum now, though.

"It is?"

Don't mind Steven, Arden. He was just going to look a little sad and wistful that he might not ever visit such a place.

"Don't suppose you got a postcard while you were there?"

Oh, but Graham would adore having visitors!

"I don't think they had postcards," Arden said. "It was very medieval fantasy. Wanna see some pictures?"

She was already digging out her phone to show Steven the one million pictures she'd taken for no reason that absolutely didn't have anything to do with Cal in the slightest.

"Yes, please!" Steven said. He patted himself down for his glasses so he could look at the photos properly. "I've not gone to a medieval fantasy world. Been in a fair few castles though. Hard not to in England. Stumble over them on the way to work."

It was a very picturesque country. "Oh, that's Acorn, the knight I convinced to throw the trials so he could do what he really wanted, which was open up a craft store," she said, pointing. "And that's the baker...that's the forest where I found Triumph in a tree...that was a nice bird that became my friend..."

There were a lot.

"That's nice he could follow his dreams," Steven said. He didn't know this Acorn of course, but that didn't mean Steven couldn't be happy for him. "I do love a baker - " Little joke there, Arden, don't mind him. " - and good that you made friends. Do the birds talk?"

"No, but this one sat on my finger and my shoulder and sang at me." She whistled a tune which sounded shockingly close to the sound a bird would make. "There is magic, I mean, there's the magic shop there, and Graham fought a dragon and took it's eye, but that bird was just a normal one."

A very normal conversation they were having here.

"That poor dragon," Steven said. "Didn't it need its eye? Or was it diseased somehow and it had to go?"

"No, just one of the trials was to go get a dreadful beasts' eye," Arden sighed. "I have a lot of noted on how Daventry can do better with their knight trials."

"I suppose if it was dreadful," Steven said, though he didn't look fully convinced. "Erm - still. All the other pictures are lovely. And you had a song sung just for you by a bird, that's sweet. It was sweet, right? The bird wasn't dreadful as well?"

"The bird was adorable," Arden said firmly. And she had her own suspicions about the dreadfulness of the dragon, since nobody had been begging for help about a rampaging dragon, but Steven didn't need to hear that. "In the end, though, Graham got to follow his dream and in his father's footsteps, so it's still overall a win."

Just not for the dragon. And poor Achaka.

"I'm happy for Graham then," Steven said. He put his glasses away. "Though he will be missed. I must confess when he did his last radio broadcast and mentioned possibly coming back, I thought that might be the case. A see you later and not farewell."

Arden shook her head, curls bouncing. "If he failed the tournament, he would have been back here," she said. "There was only one spot to be a knight, and if someone else filled it, he would have to come back and wait until next year."

"I see," Steven said. "I have to imagine that would have been bittersweet for him. Best he left while his time here was happy memories and not sad ones of having to come back with disappointment."

Arden nodded. "Yeah," she said. "Agreed. So...happy for him, but sad for us it is. Which is better than the other way around, for sure."
