Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Whoever worked the weather magic around here had done an excellent job to make sure things were nice outside for all the new (and old) residents of Fandom. It was warm and sunny, but not so humid that people would melt. There was plenty of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, places to sit in the shade, and more than enough nametags to go around. It was time to celebrate the start of the summer!

"I have a class again," Stark confirmed. "And so does Summer but not together this time. And I'm taking a few, as well. Are you? Or Watts?"

He grinned. "And I've been good. Did you hear, about Summer? She asked to 'make it official.'"

"Her teaching?" Steven guessed, trying to figure out what Summer might need to make official in some capacity.

"No. With me," Stark said, grinning wider. "She made it official. With me."

"Oh," Steven said as he understood. "Sorry, I thought the two of you - were you not before? You spend so much time together. I sort of assumed that - well that's on me then, clearly. Er - is it congratulations then?"

They were just really good friends who slept together a lot, said they loved each other, and sometimes wore coordinating outfits to events, Steven! Why did people assume that meant something?

"We weren't, really, no. It was complicated. It's less complicated now and it's... great."

"Er, less complicated is certainly good," Steven said. He was starting to sense that perhaps he'd missed a few details in the nuances of how Stark and Summer's dynamic had worked so far. "You must be well thrilled. Summer is too, I hope?"

Steven looked around as though he might be able to spot Summer in the crowd and see her looking happier too.

It had been complicated and totally Not Serious, obviously. Lots of people missed that though. On account of how it didn't look like that.

"It was her idea," Stark said. "She seems happy. We're both happy. We might go on a trip."

Which was totally different than the other times they had done that, since now they'd be a couple.

"To celebrate? That's nice," Steven said. "Any idea where to?"

"Ireland," Stark told him. "We were talking about it before but now it would be something of a celebration, yes. Have you been?"

"Oh. Well that's... well-timed?" Steven said, since he didn't know if crediting forethought for having a trip already planned applied here. "Not that I can recall, no. Heard lovely things though. Green. Good beer, that sort of thing. Is there something in particular you're looking forward to seeing?"

"Only vague plans so far. I looked at some hotels, in Dublin? And there's a tour of a whiskey distillery I thought would be enjoyable. And a brewery."

"That does sound nice," Steven said. "And you've all that lovely countryside and history. Planning on going long?"

"I'm not certain," Stark said. "With classes starting again for the summer there isn't as much time available but we can make something work, I'm sure."

It wasn't like they couldn't skip work on Mondays... they'd done it before.

"Do you have any more trips planned?"

"Nothing specific yet," Steven said. "Camping? We've discussed trying camping again. Haven't narrowed down the when of it yet. We've only done it the once - well, together. Llewellyn's done it before but the once for me with him. Still trying to figure out if I like it? So yeah, keen to give it a go, see how it is."

"I haven't ever really tried camping," Stark said. "Gladio has a class on it this summer, doesn't he? But we'll be in a hotel. A nice one. I like that, staying nice places."

"Takes getting used to," Steven said. "Marc's done it, of course. But in his case he had no choice in the matter. Doing it for fun's a different animal? So to speak? But it can be fun. You see parts of nature you wouldn't get to otherwise. Literally, you have to hike to them. No man made things around."

Then, just to be clear, "I do enjoy a nice hotel though. Always fun when the room's its own getaway, I think."

"I like seeing new things but... staying somewhere fancy still feels new. And special. But I don't mind a hike. Sometimes I think I ought to spend more time outside."

"Nothing wrong with fancy if you can manage it, you ask me," Steven said. "You're spending time in the room as well, aren't you? No shame in a nice view and a big tub. If those are things you like, of course. That's what Llewellyn and I tend to look for. And places where there's enough for us to eat on the menus."

"We had a very nice view and a very nice tub and a very nice pool, at Christmas, " Stark said. "That was a good trip. Very short but good. Food...i can always find something to eat. But i don't have restrictions on what i eat the way you do. "

"Llew does a brilliant job of finding things for us," Steven said. "He's a real talent for planning. Don't think our trips would be half as good without him. And you're taken care of? No difficulties with the mask?"

"I always worry," Stark admitted. "Less when I have someone with me though. Usually the worst that happens is strange looks and whispers."

"People can be thoughtless at times," Steven said. "It's unfortunate but true. Hopefully at least Summer doesn't stand for it?"

"I think if there were any real problems she might shoot someone," Stark said fondly. "Or at least threaten to."

"Well it's good to have someone as your - partner?" Steven was guessing at the word they might prefer using "Who believes that you should be taken care of and treated properly. You certainly don't deserve to be treated as some kind of afterthought or second class citizen. Not ever."

Steven knew there wasn't anything he could do to change Stark's past, but he hoped he could at least help Stark see that horrible treatment before meant he had to tolerate horrible treatment now, be it from random rude strangers or otherwise.
