Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Whoever worked the weather magic around here had done an excellent job to make sure things were nice outside for all the new (and old) residents of Fandom. It was warm and sunny, but not so humid that people would melt. There was plenty of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, places to sit in the shade, and more than enough nametags to go around. It was time to celebrate the start of the summer!

"We?" Jane, focus. "It's sometimes a sink or swim thing, sorry. If it helps, I apparently look just like my teaching buddy's first wife?"

Aaaaall kinds of awkward there, Don. All kinds.

Yeah, Jane, you know, we? Him and Thor? Wait, they had thought they were one person when they were dating. "We can talk about it later," he assured her, and then caught up to, "No, no, we were never married!" Because he was your teaching buddy here?

"My teaching buddy," Jane said, looking a little anxious about that as she looked for Anakin in the crowd to point him out. "Uh, over there? Also never married here. Definitely never married anyone, personally."

But then she had to mutter, "...unless there are some weird customs in Asgard no one told me about."

Which was honestly possible.

"Not that would apply," Don assured her (and himself), relaying the information from Thor. Of course, that only applied in his world, with his Jane, but he was too flabbergasted to think of that caveat at present. Or that he was being unhelpfully vague.

"The dean who drove the bus?" he checked. "You married--I mean, someone who looked like you. Right."

Thor, so help her. If you secretly married her at any point in time...

"So, yes. I full understand the awkward. There's also a guy here who looks like a less muscular Thor. Which... you are from a place where I dated him as well, I assume."

Sorry, Raiden. You just didn't have the same bulk!

He did! It was the icons that were lean!

"You...also dated Thor," Don said slowly, because the fact that she thought she needed to tell him was...weird. "I mean, yes. You also dated Thor where I am from." Because they were the same guy, Jane. You knew that, right?

THEY WERE NOT THE SAME PERSON, DON.

"Well, yes. For a while. But he's in space now." This all made perfect sense, Donald.

That was very true! Raiden had a baseball cap!

Oh, no, that part actually made perfect sense, if not for the reasons it did to Jane. "Avengers stuff?" Don guessed. "Or Beta Ray Bill?"

"I think on a journey of self discovery?" Jane said hesitantly, frowning at Beta Ray Bill. Who sounded made up. Just flat out made up. "At least, that's what Valkyrie said. With the Guardians of the Galaxy."

Now who was saying stuff that sounded made up? Thor, hanging out with the Guardians of the Galaxy? Come on. But Don just said, "...well, if you say so."

"It's been a weird few years," Jane offered with an expression that said she was downplaying a lot.

"I'd like to hear about it some time," Don said. Even if she wasn't his universe's Jane, well...he'd missed a lot. "So, you're supposed to, uh...bring me up to speed?"

"Yes," Jane replied with emphasis. To both things, really. "Well, you can already tell this place is weird. But most everyone here is really nice and willing to help out if you need it. Small town kind of thing."

"So the opposite of Manhattan," Don said with a nod.

Joke. It was a joke. One which presumed Jane also had some familiarity with Manhattan.

Jane laughed, at least catching it was a joke even if she wasn't too familiar with NYC like her counterpart was. "Well, since you come from a place like me, a lot of the weirdness isn't... well, it's still weird, but it's almost a quaint weird?"

Barely a single kidnapping!

Spider-Man would be at a total loss with the lack of muggers around here.

"Like your ex from a different universe showing up," he suggested.

"Well, you turned out to be nice, all the awkwardness about--" She just gestured between them. "--aside. I'd be pretty happy to be your buddy."

Awww.

"Yes, I know that was so very cheesy."

"I'm happy to be your buddy, too," Don told her. Regardless of the weirdness, which he did not yet realize was so much more weird for him than for Jane.

Of course, that balance could change.

They could pass that ball back and forth! It'd be great.

"Let me give you my number in case you have any questions or need help with your class, okay?" Jane said with a quick smile.

"That would be great," Don agreed. "I've never taught before, you know...or maybe you don't." Weird. "But I'll get you my number, too." And, of course, Thor's, once he'd gotten a phone set up.

"I've taught here for a little bit," Jane agreed, entering in her number for him. "And of course back home, but that was mostly post-grad level stuff."

Which the other Jane did, right? Right?

"Oh, yeah? What do you teach?" Seemed kind of weird they wanted him to come in to teach first aid when they already had Jane on staff, now that he thought about it.

Wait, hadn't she mentioned a doctorate? Like a PhD?

"Here? It's arts and crafts this semester," she said dryly. "Which is a far cry from theoretical astrophysics, but I'm trying all kinds of new things lately."

"'Theoretical astrophysics?'" Don echoed. "Oh, wow. Back where I come from you were an MD. Actually, when we were dating, you were a nurse, and then you went back to school and...doesn't matter," he decided. "Different person. Haven't seen her in...a very long time." Because he'd been dead, but, you know. Details.

Hey, they could bond over not existing for a while there! Fun times!

"I thought about being a nurse when I was a kid," Jane offered softly, thinking about her mother in the hospital back then. "I dated my Donald back in post-grad before... a lot of things in my life changed trajectory."

Mostly due to Thor.
