Photography Through the Ages; Thursday, Third Period [04/11].

"This week," Prompto said, from his usual perch on the top of the desk up front at the start of class, "we're going to be taking the time to learn about another photographer, and another focus on street photography, with the story of a woman named Vivian Maier, who spent most of her life as a nanny and amateur photographer, but when a cache of her photographs were found after her death, she sort of skyrocketed into popularity and interest in the photographic world. I don't know about you guys, but, to me, that means that even if we are just snapping shots of the most mundane things or our every day lives, photography has a way of living well beyond our scope and can carry on stories through generations. And I think that's pretty great.

"So, settle in, get comfortable, and we'll watch the documentary, and then go over some of Maier's work to have a discussion about her style, what me might light about it, or anything else about the film that struck you as worthwhile or interesting."

Like a candid street shot!

A documentary on the late Vivian Maier, a nanny whose previously unknown cache of 100,000 photographs earned her a posthumous reputation as one of the most accomplished street photographers.

Any thoughts on street photography as an art form? How about from a cultural perspective? Are there any points about Maier's life or any of her photographs that struck you as particularly interesting or thought-provoking? No wrong answers in a discussion class, let's hear your thoughts!

"This isn't something we ever did, at home, before," Stark said. "I wish we had. It would be good to have pictures of some of my friends. It's just... it's nice, that there are just these little glimpses of life as she saw it."

"Well," Prompto pointed out with a faint smile, "no time to start like the present, right? Well, I mean, assuming you can get home, or at least wherever home is now. It's a little sad, thinking that we may have missed the opportunity to snag pictures of some people already gone, but it's a good reminder to appreciate the ones still here now, you know?"

He knew he was definitely grateful he'd been the shutterbug he was on that last trip, no matter how much everyone else teased and poked fun at him about it.

"I try to take pictures now, at least sometimes," Stark said. "Although there are usually other people doing a better job at that."

You know, that ginger with the social media following for example.

"I like that she documented little things," Arden said. "Cause that's life, right? For every big, life-defining event, there are a thousand little life-affirming events, that get overlooked. But she didn't."

Arden drummed her fingers on her desk. "It's like dandelions," she said finally.

Prompto's head tilted a little at that, with a small, amused smile of intrigue.

"Dandelions?" he asked, feeling like he knew where Arden might be going with that, but he figured he'd let her take them there for sure.

"Well, like... everybody sees dandelions as weeds, right? At best, people usually just ignore them. But actually, dandelions are these beautiful splotches of color, vibrant pops of yellow in lawns and even in cities, pushing up through the concrete in places they shouldn't live, but they still thrive. They're so common that people ignore them, but when you think about, really think, they're beautiful flowers, edible and medicinal, full of wishes..." She trailed off, aware she was rambling again. "I just thought that...yeah."

He's definitely there, if you need to talk to him! And a big advocate for tons of candid photography being important!
