Wilderness Survival; Wednesday, Second Period [03/06].

"Well, everyone," said Gladio, with a nod, as they were back on that familiar mountaintop again, "time to get back to it. When we left off before the break, we were talking a lot about sustenance. We've covered how to obtain water, some good foraging practices, and different methods of fishing. Today, we're going to up that to a bit of small game hunting and trapping, so apologies to anyone who gets a little squeamish about the fact, out here in the wilderness, there's nothing between us and the meat we eat except ourselves. And I'm not sure about the rest of you, but it hits a little different when it's meat you've caught yourself, that's for sure. Especially when there's no meat at all if you don't.

"Now, we're going to go over a lot of different things about small game hunting and trapping," Gladio continued, "including several different kinds of snares and traps and how to build some, as well as a general overview of what kind of small game you might find most places. Obviously, that's going to change a lot depending on where you are, but that just goes to show that, when going to a new place, it's always good to research this sort of thing before going, because you never know what might come in handy to know. As for today, this list will cover everything programmed into the simulation so you know what you might be hunting for in just a bit. And if there's not any initial questions, then, I'm just gonna jump right in."

There's a lot to cover today, and questions to go into something a little more are always welcome! Gladio's mostly going to be focusing on the actual building and use for the traps, though, because that's where the...well...meat of the lesson will be!

From deadfalls and snares to all sorts of other things to keep in mind, it's your turn to try your hand at building traps, setting them up, and seeing if any o the wildlife are careless enough to fall for it!

And, sure, they're not real animals, but there's probably at least a few people feeling a little grateful that they're not being expected to also cook that cute bunny rabbit today, as well.

Not a difficult task for Nell. In fact, if she had needed to butcher the animals she could have done that quite easily as well.

Arden was fine catching a few bunnies and even a chipmunk. It was when a ground pheasant got caught in the snare that she had a quiet freakout and quickly pulled everything apart. Mammals? No worries. Birds? No. Worries.

...No reason though. Honest.

Jon suspected finding fear in the wilderness was harder than this, unless he could live off animal fear, which...he had his doubts about, though honestly he hadn't tried before.

He was just going to not say anything and do his poor best to build a snare.

Which the first squirrel immediately broke.

He'd more of a big game kind of guy, but so help him if he doesn't miss a freshly plucked daggerquill on a skewer over an open fire sometimes...Chicken just ain't the same!

And here was Nell ready to turn her face up for a kiss once they were alone.

And there was Gladio ready to lean down for that kiss to make it just a little bit easier for her, grinning as he kissed Nell back.

"No surprise that this one didn't get you all squeamish," he noted fondly, so, you know, add that to the long list of things he loved about her.

"Nope," she said. "Caught and then butchered bigger things than these."

"How big are we talkin'?" asked Gladio, lifting his scarred eyebrow pointedly, looking impressed but also grinning like he wasn't actually worried about what he was about to ask actually being a problem. "Am I gonna have to make some adjustment to my plan for next week to give you an actual challenge?"

"Deer and hogs mostly," Nell said, "Though I've helped butcher cows before. Mostly when I was still with the church for that, though. Once I was with John and Leah it was more breaking down a part of the cow rather than the whole thing."

She looked up at him. "You're not going to make these guys butcher a deer, are you?" That probably wouldn't go over well.

"Well, no..."

But there was a pause that Nell would probably recognize by now, the one that preceded a slow grin and that mischievous glint in his eyes before he shrugged and added, "I'd bring in Iggy to do that."

Nell laughed. "Okay, then. Well, I'm glad to be his assistant if he'd like."

"I'll be sure to toss that offer his way when we make the lesson plan, then," Gladio offered; he was still on the fence about whether or not they'd actually be getting that into it, but a class on camp cooking was definitely on the horizon, so they'd be getting an Ignis regardless at some point. "But I'm sure you can guess, he gets kind of fussy when it comes to his kitchen..."

A beat.

"...about most things, actually, so..."

"I had noticed that," Nell said with a smile. "So... what do you have planned for the rest of the day?"

Gladio shrugged a little. "Dunno," he said, "nothing set in stone. Probably something to eat next, class like this is just gonna work up an appetite, you know."

Well, maybe not for some people, but...

His brow quirked speculatively at Nell as he looked over toward her. "How 'bout you? Got any big demands or pressing matters?"

"Nope. Food sounds good, though," she said. "And at some point we need to bag up the stuffed... creatures ... we aren't keeping and start checking out children's wards in hospitals."

"No better time than the present, right?" Gladio asked. "Especially if neither of us have any other plans. Grab something to eat, get everything gathered up and ready to go, especially before Rigel and Cygnus can get to 'em. And then maybe tomorrow after Iggy's class, we can go deliver them. Or over the weekend."

He then grinned, nudging her a little with his shoulder. "I'm gonna be helping in that class tomorrow, you know," he informed her. "So you'll get even more of me."

"Sounds like a good plan," Nell said.

And nudged him. "Oh, no, not more of you! Whatever will I do?"

And stretched up to kiss him again.

"You're pretty tough," Gladio pointed out, his arm going easily around Nell as he leaned in and maybe offered a little support to again make that reach up to kiss him just that much easier for her. "I think you'll be able handle it. Which I don't say lightly, you know. That's a lot of awesome for just one person to deal with."

"I've been meaning to talk to you about your low self-esteem issues," Nell teased. "I worry that you just don't think very well of yourself."
