Wilderness Survival; Wednesday, Second Period [02/14].

Class was back on the mountain again, with its temperate main base and its snowy side off in one direction and the desert side of in the other, and there was a small table set up beside Gladio this time with a bunch of booklets, pamphlets, and other information.

"Fire," he said, getting class started and lifting the first finger before continuing the list, "shelter, water. We've got three of the main points of wilderness survival down pretty solid so far, but now we're going to move onto the next one: food. There's a couple different directions to go with that one, so this'll span over several lessons, but today, we're focusing on what might seem like the most simple, but, out in the wild, it can get a little complicated...and maybe even dangerous, and that's foraging.

"Now, we could have foraged pretty okay here in the preserve on the island," he continued, "but things are still pretty limited and safe out there. Here, we have the opportunity to spot a wider variety and a wider range of things to avoid, plus a couple of different climates, because you'll obviously have a harder time in more difficult terrain.

"SO we're going to take some time to go over some general guidelines on how to tell if a plant might be safe to forage for food, as well as some general guides to what you might find around these simulations for reference. Of course, the best way to prepare for a foraging situation is to be well-versed in these skills and have a wide knowledge of your area, but in an emergency situation, you might not exactly have had the time to prepare, so today we'll practice being able to determine what to forage effectively. Let's start, then, with some common plants that'll really pull you out of a desperate pinch...."

If it feels like Gladio's throwing a lot of specific information at you, don't worry, he'll be happy to take questions and he's also handing out a few foraging guides to help break it down visually and for you to use as a reference, too, and he's making sure to put plenty of emphasis on what might happen if you do forage something you really shouldn't, although he's got a guide on how to handle that, too!

And now it's time to put things into action and get foraging through the woods, the mountains, or the more desert area to see what you can find! Work by yourself or with a friend or two to scrounge up safe sustenance. Options are varied and moddable, of course, and safe if you accidentally do decide to consume something you shouldn't, because danger shop! You'll mostly just know it because they're programmed to taste really, really bad.

Nell was also more than happy to assist anyone who might need or want a hand.

Who will never not be disappointed on how difficult it is to forage things like potions and antidotes on this world; you could find that shit practically anywhere on Eos!

As usual Nell was hanging around after class to talk to the teacher. She'd left a few little Cup Noodletype of Valentines. (Though the last was obviously made from Cup Noodle instead of Maruchan. Obviously.) around the house for Gladio to find this morning.

(Good, because Maruchan was garbage and honestly a little bit of a trigger for Gladio these days, too).

But he'd definitely noticed the little Valentine's left around, which almost made him feel a little bad that he hadn't gone and done more for Nell, but maybe there'd still be some time to make up for it? Either way, he was grinning as he went to find her once everyone started making their way out.

"See what I meant?" he asked, coming in to place a light hand on her back as he leaned in for an equally light kiss. "Last week about familiar territory?"

Oh, there was definitely time if he wanted, but honestly, his presence was a wonderful Valentine in and if itself.

"Mmmhmm," she said with a smile. "Easy and fun!"

And she kissed him again for good measure.

Gladio would definitely not argue with the fact that his best gifts came from him being...well, himself, too.

"Maybe not to anyone who foraged the wrong thing," Gladio pointed out with a smirk, "but I figured you'd at least get a kick out of this one. And between the both of us, if we ever do get stranded in the wilderness on accident," as opposed to on purpose, which both of them would easily, willingly go and do to themselves, "I think we'll be all set."

She laughed. "Yes, I think that between the two of us we're well prepared for any wilderness adventure."

And just chalk that up, really, to the long list of reasons why Gladio just adored and admired Nell. He couldn't help but love a woman who, if he just plopped right down in the middle of no where in the woods, would not only not resent him for it, but actually be thrilled for the opportunity.

"So," he said, as those adoring thoughts played very easily on his adoring smile, "any plans for after class?"

"Weeeellll..." she said slowly. "I had thought I'd spend some time with this really handsome Wilderness instructor I know, but I wasn't sure if he was free or not."

"Hmmmm," Gladio hummed thoughtfully, nodding a little, even going so far as to stroking his beard a little to really emphasize how much consideration this was getting. "Well. Really handsome Wilderness instructors are in pretty high demand this time of year. Especially since a lot of them moonlight as really good masseuses, too. But I think you might get lucky and find a pretty big gap in their schedules anyway...."

"Oooohhh..." Nell said admiringly. "Well, then if my particular favorite wilderness instructor slash masseuse is free, I'd love to spend some time with him."

She reached up to feel his muscles consideringly. "I think you'd be a perfect fit."

It was, of course, entirely unnecessary, but Gladio was just going to flex a little, subtly, under that consideration, before meeting Nell's conclusion with a broad grin. "You better believe it," he said with firm agreement, before his head jerked toward the danger shop's door. "Come on. Let's get out of here. If you're going to get your hands all over my muscles in the great outdoors, it might as well be out in the real thing."

Nell laughed again and offered her hand as they headed out. "Oh, such promise!" She'd noticed and appreciated the flex, of course. "Be still my heart. Much more of this and when we're done I might just let you take me home and have your way with me."

"Mmm..." This time, Gladio's thoughtful hum seemed to have a little bit uncertain criticism in it, squinting slightly with it as he gave Nell's hand a squeeze, then shook his head. "Nah. Not my style." Then he looked down over at her with exactly one lift of his eyebrows and a big grin. "Much rather have our way with each other."

Nell's smile faded briefly at his uncertainty and head shake, not sure where he was going with it, and she ducked her head till he looked down at her with that smile. Then hers was back again with a hand squeeze of her own. "That sounds like a wonderful idea."
