BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday Morning

Lydia had found the portal to be a much faster means of transportation from Sainte Josephine to Maryland than by ship (with the added bonus of not having to spend several days upon the sea), so that was quite satisfactory, although when she had arrived she had inquired about where to find a footman to help with her trunk and been directed to a wheeled cart she was apparently expected to push herself! Hmph. And the cup of tea she'd gotten was just dreadful, but she supposed she should have expected as much from a stand mostly selling coffee--and in paper cups!

At least the (rather gaudy) banner on the wall gave her certainty she was waiting in the right place, and she settled to mentally compose a letter to Miss Lambe whilst she did so.

The bus was here!

Well. Okay. The bus wasn't here, the bus was at the DMV for its annual inspection (way to look at the calendar, Fosse). Anakin was driving the backup van, which definitely looked like he also sold pot out of the back of it on weekends: it was a navy blue box with a giant gremlin sprayed onto the door in a way that wouldn't be out of place on a 1980s Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper.

But that whole aesthetic would be a problem for five minutes from now Anakin. For now, he had to see how many people he was picking up. "Fandom?" he called, sweeping into the lounge in his normal Jedi robes, cloak swirling ~~over~~dramatically around his boots. "Who's here for Fandom?"

"Oh, wow!" said Yukari, letting out a long whistles as she grabbed her suitcase and started heading toward the bus. "I bet a vehicle like that could take an impact real good!"

Because that was definitely a normal thought to have about a van you were about to climb into.

"Say," she said, pausing a moment as she blinked and actually seemed to see the guy who was shouting for the first time and...well...

"Well, if I'd have known we could just show up in pajamas, I wouldn't have bothered putting all this on! But, anyway, is it a long drive? You ever let any of the incoming teachers drive this thing in?"

Because that was also the thing to say after complimenting it on its assumed impactability.

"I do not let the newcomers drive," Anakin said because he'd definitely heard the impact comment, "and these aren't my pajamas."

Though they could definitely also be his pajamas. "These are my Jedi robes."

There. Cleared that right up!

Well, Yukari was just about to suggest bathrobe, so that was sort of close, although her head tilted a little with an expression of curious confusion.

"Je-di?" she repeated, her accent probably coming out a bit more as it played around with the unfamiliar word and tried to place it. She squinted as it became more elusive, and then she felt a spark of frustration over the fact that, for all the progress she'd made earlier in being such a good teacher right out the gate, she was getting stuck on a new word!

She sucked in a breath, then wrinkled her nose a little before she ventured out, not nearly as confidently as she would have liked, "Is that slang?"

She should be forgiven for not knowing regional slang!

"....for bathrobe?"

Because it should be!

"....yukata?" she tried, because, you know, for someone with a culture of robes, you'd think she'd have been a little less dismissive of it, but this was America!

Anakin laughed. "It's not slang," he said. "Jedi is the religion I'm a part of. It's not very known here."

Oh, well, he was laughing! That was a good sign, right? Yukari gave a little bit of an uncertain chuckle back. "I see! I see!" she said. "So, what? Does that make you some sort of monk, then? A priest?"

There was another word, right there on the tip of her tongue.

"Accolade?"

"Just a Jedi," Anakin said. "I'm not longer a student--we call them Padawans."

Because sure.

Lydia got distracted from staring at the van by noticing how nicely Anakin's cloak swirled. It took good craftsmanship to get that kind of effect, and she did love a bit of drama.

But then she was back to staring at the van and asking, perplexed, "Where are the horses...?"

"Oh, we don't get around using livestock here," Anakin said airily. "This is a van, and it's run by an engine under the hood."

"An 'engine?'" Regency, Anakin. Regency. "Like in a locomotive?" Lydia remembered hearing people talk about those newfangled things, but personally she didn't think they'd take off.

"Yes," Anakin said because eh, close enough. "A much smaller version of a locomotive."

"Don't those go on tracks...?" She'd never actually seen one, mind you.

She'd also heard they were filthy and got soot all over your clothes, so she wanted to make it clear that, "This is a brand new pelisse."

"They don't always go on tracks," Anakin said with the blithe confidence of a guy not from this planet. "And it's a very nice...pelisse."

"Thank you for the kind compliment." It really was, wasn't it. She had needed some new things, as Maryland was a cooler climate than Sainte Josephine. It had been a need, all right? "So do I just..." she gestured vaguely toward the...conveyance. "Climb aboard?" Weren't you going to offer the young lady a hand, Anakin?

How declasse of him not to offer immediately. "Just take that step there," he said, offering his hand.
