BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday Morning

Lydia had found the portal to be a much faster means of transportation from Sainte Josephine to Maryland than by ship (with the added bonus of not having to spend several days upon the sea), so that was quite satisfactory, although when she had arrived she had inquired about where to find a footman to help with her trunk and been directed to a wheeled cart she was apparently expected to push herself! Hmph. And the cup of tea she'd gotten was just dreadful, but she supposed she should have expected as much from a stand mostly selling coffee--and in paper cups!

At least the (rather gaudy) banner on the wall gave her certainty she was waiting in the right place, and she settled to mentally compose a letter to Miss Lambe whilst she did so.

((Iiiiiit's newbie shuttle time!))

Yukari's flight had, rudely, been a bit delayed, which put a terrible damper on all her plans to just completely load up on all sorts of new American food before she needed to catch the shuttle to her new school. So, quickly, rushing out the gate, shoving aside those who seemed to have forgotten how walking worked, she had to prioritize and decide what was the most important. Starbucks, obviously, she had to try actual American Starbucks. And McDonald's! Taco Bell? She'd heard stories! Ahhh, but she remembered that there was going to be a picnic at the school, too! She didn't want to fill up on food she had to pay for when there was free food waiting for her at her new job! And there'd be plenty of time to appreciate American fast food outside of an airport, no doubt...

A new plan in place, Yukari sighed with relief and, completely ignoring the looks she was getting from the people she'd just pushed past, she slowed her gait to a jaunty stroll and whistled happily as she went to find a Starbucks to start.

About twenty minutes later, she was tearing into the lounge, panicked and flailing dangerously for someone who had a very full cup of hot coffee in one hand, and shouting, growing even more distressed when she saw how empty it was under that sparkling FU banner, "It's not too late, is it? Did I miss it? Did I miss the bus? My flight was late! I should get a refund!!"

Yukari blinked, then squinted at Lydia for a moment, slowly brought her coffee cup to her mouth to take a quick sip and followed it up with a bite of the pastry in her other hand, and then squinted slightly more.

"Fashionably late," she mused, in a tone that suggested that, if she had a third hand right now, she'd stroke her chin contemplatively, "eh? Hmmm....yes. Yes, that works nicely. That works very well, how else should we be arriving, after all?"

She chuckled a little to herself and then seemed to remember that Lydia was there. Since this was America, she was going to eschew all the formalities one might expect in Japan (as if she ever really followed those in the first place), and lifted her cup in a salute in lieu of waving. "Nice to meet you, Lydia! I'm Miss," oh, she seemed to delight particularly in the use of an English title there, "Yukari Tanizaki! Soon-to-be Teacher of Japanese at Fandom University!"

Yes, Lydia, you could be very impressed now!

"Oh, please," Yukari waved her hand dismissively....thankfully, the hand with the pastry and not the coffee, "we're in America! Nobody's really that formal in America, are they? Just Yukari's fine! And, boy, I sure hope it is allowed or I'm about to be in a lot of trouble! But back home, I taught English to my Japanese students, so it just make sense that, over here, I'd do the reverse and teach Japanese to my English students! So konnichiwa! Genkidesu ka! That's 'hello, how are you?' Now you're ahead of the bend!"

Look at how good a teacher she was, teaching even outside the classroom! To someone who probably wasn't even one of her students! Yukari gave a happy, pleased sigh, mentally patting herself on the back with another sip of her coffee.

Which was terrible, by the way, just as she expected!

"Good!" Yukari offered, looking terribly pleased by the bad pronunciation, because that meant Lydia wasn't about to prove herself to be an unexpected prodigy who could outsmart her and make her look bad by being an instant savant! "Very good! Sugoi! That's how you'd say 'very good' in Japanese!"

Betcha didn't expect you'd get an impromptu lesson from clearly the world's best teacher, now, did you, Lydia! Ha!
