Your computerized GPS has taken you down the wrong way on a dirt goat path full of very irritated local inhabitants. How do you diffuse the situation?

Dave Barry says that in this sort of situation you can warn them three times and then if they don't stop you can beat them to death with a big stick. I'm guessing that's the wrong answer, so I think I might develop a terrible cough and continuously cough in their direction without remembering to cover my mouth. And of course I'd apologize after each cough.
