Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, Saturday, All Day

If anyone in Fandom could control the weather, they weren't doing a particularly good job with it today. It was quite hot and sticky outside, so the lawn was filled with as many pop-up tents as could be acquired to provide some well-needed shade. There were plenty of cool drinks and ~~moddable~~ food that would hopefully survive the heat--it might not have felt like summer would be ending any time soon, but it was time to celebrate the coming fall nonetheless!

Arden had been trying to! She'd filed it under the same 'really advanced drama department' header she'd put Stark's mask under.

"Oh, I...don't think that's...I doubt I have the background...so you were saying about them in general, though?"

She'd been homeschooled by entities who were only vaguely interested in her formal education. She definitely wasn't ready for astrophysicist papers.

Awww. But it meant she really was a Thor when someone made jokes like that!

"It's really not so complicated once you get the basics down," Jane assured her, definitely not getting the reason for her hesitation. Because science. Oh, the hopeful smile she had in people being interested in the subject matter.

"The basics being...?"

Sorry, Jane. She was going to let you down so very hard here.

"Well, it really depends on if we're discussing observational or theoretical--" Oh god, save yourself, Arden. She was going into post-grad lecture mode.

"I'm thinking of majoring in criminal justice!" Arden interjected. "And I don't think that's the kind of observation you're talking about!"

And unless the math was roughly on par with If the perp starts running away at four miles an hour..., it was beyond Arden's ken. Or desired ken, for that matter.

"Oh. Oh!" Jane said, stopping the lecture before she could get into wormhole physics using the movie Event Horizon. Which was probably for the best for everyone involved. "Well, that's good too. There's a Trooper Station in town in case you wanted to shadow anyone there for some experience. I could help with that, I'm sure."

Since the whole kind of superhero thing probably didn't really apply to the proper criminal justice system.

"Well, I mean, I'm more interested in becoming a Watch--errr, I mean a Private Eye than an actual cop," Arden said quickly. "It's just the best major to get me there. Since they don't really offer a BA in Snooping or whatever."

Though, if anywhere did, it would be Fandom, let's be real.

Considering Jane was teaching a class on Ass-Kicking... yes. Very likely.

"I think there's also a PI on island," she said, thinking about it. "At least I've heard about it on the radio. I've never really needed to go."

"Like a commercial or something?"

People listened to the radio when not in a car?

"Ah," Jane said before closing her mouth to figure out how best to explain it. "No, it's more like the gossip around the island. If you listen tomorrow, you'll probably hear about this conversation and a lot of others. I'm not really sure how, but people insist it's squirrels. It can be both invasive and weird sometimes."

And sometimes it was read by Tony Stark. Which was just weird for her.

"...Is this like the conspiracy theory that all birds were replaced by government spy cams in the 70s?" Arden checked.

This conversation was actually not getting less confusing than astrophysics.

"...why am I even surprised people would think that?" Jane said after a moment. Because she'd been on the internet, thanks. Mostly because of Darcy, but still. Weird theory. "But no. Unfortunately I'm being honest with you there."

"So...we turn on a radio--" Who even owned radios anymore? Hadn't they stopped making them in the 90s once they invented the portable disc-thingy players? "--and listen to people gossip about us with information they got from squirrels. Just to make sure I'm following this correctly."

It was just an adorable little anachronism these days. But you went with it.

"And I have a magic hammer that gives me super powers," Jane replied. "Yes. This place is just a little weird. But I'm not lying about any of it because being new here... is a learning curve. Been there."

Even with her weird background, it was weird.

Arden was realizing that even with her weird background, it was weird.

Though she seemed completely unfazed by the admission of magical power-granting hammers. "Oh! Oh! A magical artifact! That makes so much sense. Does it have anything to do with your whole..." Don't say costume, Arden, do not say costume. "...Cape?"

But science, Arden! Science was so much cooler!

"Cape," Jane repeated with an amused look as she hefted Mjolnir up for Arden to see if she wanted. "Yes. Technically it makes me Thor."

Agree to disagree, Jane.

"A...hammer. Makes you the Norse god of thunder?" Arden repeated slowly. She was doing that a lot today. A few more minutes of rapid thought and then she shrugged. "Actually, I could see it. Okay."

"Mjolnir," Jane replied with a little shrug that twirled it in her hand with a sense of weight that did not match how easily it moved. Then she continued in a bit of an unflattering impersonation of Odin with: "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor. It's a spell, I guess? From his father."

And Jane very clearly had some opinions on Odin.

"How very Arthurian of him," Arden said, watching her swing the hammer. Noting that it swung more easily than the weight would imply sounded like something someone with science smarts would notice. She just thought it looked neat. "But accepting that an artifact with the belief of an entire culture could give magic powers to someone that then embodied a prominent member of that culture's mythology isn't the weirdest thing."

Hell, it wasn't even the weirdest thing in this conversation.

"He's less mythical and more... my ex-boyfriend," Jane said with a little sigh. "Which makes the whole god thing less impressive when I've seen him struggle with making pancakes."

It was adorable, by the way.

"The original Thor is your ex-boyfriend?" Arden yelped.

"Yep," Jane said, popping the p at the end and then sighing a little. "That'd be him."

The one she broke up with via a letter.

Okay, so Arden had never had a boyfriend, but even she was pretty sure you weren't supposed to do that.

"How do you...did you meet him at some kind of...all gods meetup?" Was there a hookup app? CreatR or something?

None of these were the questions she expected to have on her first day of college.

Look. Mistakes were made.

"He sort of showed up on earth one day? The whole spell on the hammer thing was supposed to be a lesson from his dad that made him like the rest of us humans." Because Odin was a really shitty dad. Like, the worst. "And that's when we met."

"...Did you get the hammer in the breakup?"

Like maybe had just decided not to pack it up with the rest of his things, presumably delivered with the letter?
