Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, Saturday, All Day

If anyone in Fandom could control the weather, they weren't doing a particularly good job with it today. It was quite hot and sticky outside, so the lawn was filled with as many pop-up tents as could be acquired to provide some well-needed shade. There were plenty of cool drinks and moddable food that would hopefully survive the heat--it might not have felt like summer would be ending any time soon, but it was time to celebrate the coming fall nonetheless!

Well, Belle, maybe your faculty advisor could help with making you a little less confused! Because as soon as she spotted Belle, Summer kicked it into her newfound FU FA mode and began to make her way over.

"Belle! Hiiiii! How's it going? Good to see you!"

It definitely made this part easier when you actually knew who the person you were advising even was.

Belle offered a bright smile. "It's going quite well, surprisingly. I was meant to be going home but something's changed and I'll be staying on for the new university instead!"

Which, presumably, a faculty advisor would already know but Belle didn't even know she had an advisor yet!

Summer was working up to it! It was all kind of new for everyone, so definitely required at least a little build-up, right? Although now she could sort of just launch right into it. She had a whole thing planned, okay?

"So I've heard," she stated. "So, on behalf of the newly minted FU faculty as a whole and as your faculty advisor specifically, allow me to congratulate you on being a part of the first class to attend these new college courses for fun, profit, and....credit to use elsewhere, I'm sure, if you decide to pursue even further education. Well, maybe not the profit, that goes against the whole college model, but also, despite the name, we're more of a community college than a university, which is significantly less of a total grift. Anyway, I'm your faculty advisor, so I'm here to help you through everything, which is honestly kind of funny because I myself dropped out of community college after only one summer, but it wasn't here, so it was pretty lame. So if you need helllp or have any queeeestions, I guess that's where I come in, which means you probably already know you're in good hands."

"Oh, thank you!" Belle beamed at her. "That's wonderful. I'm glad to have a familiar face to help. But what do you mean less of a grift?"

Oh, Belle. Sweet summer child.

And the smile Summer was giving Belle just then was pretty much the equivalent of that, pretty much an expression version of a little pat on the head.

"The amount of money it costs for college compared to the benefit of actually getting a degree these days is essentially bullshit," she said. "And I didn't even need that semester of business courses back home to tell me that."

"I've never really considered the cost of an education here," Belle mused. "I ought to have done. I'm just happy for the opportunity to study further rather than going home where such things would be discouraged."

Summer had to wrinkle her nose a little bit at that. "Yeah," she said, "that would be totally lame. I mean, I'm generally not interested in further education because school was never really my thing to begin with and I feel I've learned so much more from just plain experience, but it's good that I at least have the choice. And if you're from somewhere that would be discouraged, I am also glad you're able to take more classes here. What've you got on your roster?"

"Practical Folklore," Belle said. "And The Renaissance. Perhaps I'll be able to take something of yours next term?"

Assuming, of course, Belle got to stay longer.

"Oooh, those sound," not like anything she would ever want to take, "fun! And you should! My classes are always guaranteed to be an experience."

Not knowing what kind of experience was part of the draw!

"I've certainly found previous classes with you to be an experience," Belle said. "I look forward to another eventually!"

Summer squinted a little bit thoughtfully. "Which ones have you taken with me so far?" she wondered. "It's hard to keep track of them all, to be honest, although I do remembering having you in at least one of them. I just can't remember which."

And then, a small frown.

"Ugh, god, have I really been doing this for that long?"

It had been about three or four years, damn!

"We visited a number of other worlds," Belle said.

Like that narrowed it down much. "There were intelligent dogs in one of them."

"Oooh!" said Summer. "Then that was probably also one of the times I taught a multiverse class like I am this time around! We're definitely going to Dog World again this year, I had it planned for our second class, actually!"

Because who the fuck wouldn't want to go to a planet ruled by dogs? Come on, now.

Well, okay, maybe not cats. If she brought Pancakes with her, it would probably be a whole interplanetary incident, no matter how tight she was with the Emporor.

"I enjoyed the dog world," Belle assured her. "I hope it goes well again this time around for you. The whole class was something of an adventure."

"And I took you guys to the planet with the screaming sun, too, right?" asked Summer, because that was also a pretty good classic. "And probably Blips and Chits, the big space arcade. Not sure if I did the big giant heads for that class, though, but I mean, hell, there's infinite possibilities with that class, you're not going to be able to get to everything."

"You did," Belle confirmed, making a face at the memory. "That one I wouldn't have objected to skipping."

"Yeah," said Summer, "that one gets a little more awkward now that I also booted the racoon who trapped everyone in a hole a while ago there, but he's pretty easy to avoid. But I think it's a good one to really show just how fucked the mutliverse actually can be, and, I mean, you know, that's the title of the class."

"It was certainly an experience," Belle allowed. "I do think it served its purpose. Do you have other horrible worlds to visit in place of that one?"
