Cutter had made the mistake of checking the news before he had gone to bed last night and he had seen the latest rubbish that Christine had been telling the papers .. he had stayed up late reading them so he was rather tired, he glanced at Connor wondering if Connor had seen those reports but he didn’t know whether he should tell him or wait til after class to ask.

“Welcome back,” Cutter began softly, “this week is the final week of class and I’d like you to give your reports on your favourite creature or dinosaur that we learnt in class this session,” he nodded over at Connor if there was anything he would like to add.

Connor was a little fidgety himself as he clutched a coffee tightly in his hands. He had had about as restful a night as Cutter, and it showed.

“We have enjoyed having you in the class and as always, Professor Cutter and I are here if you have any questions before your presentations. And we are here after class as well if you need anything.”

Cutter nodded, looking at Connor with concern as he did before turning his attention back to the class, “we will be teaching again in the fall and we will be teaching a course on the evolutionary sciences, if you are interested in taking the class and now if there are no further questions, lets begin your final presentations,”

Cutter was trying to look approachable but he tired and was rather distracted by the new articles that had been published and he was clinging desperately to the large cup of coffee that he also had.

"So I.... I take you saw them too?" Connor asked once class was over and they were alone in the classroom.

Cutter nodded miserably, “it was really too much to hope that she’d forgotten about us was it?” he sighed.

"We had a small break...and at least she can't get us here" Connor said trying to sound more hopeful than he looked. "I... I did get a call right before class. Didn't recognize the number and like an idiot I answered it." Connor sighed and took a long drink from the coffee. "It was the press," he said miserably.

"Oh Connor, I'm so sorry," Cutter said softly, "I turned my phone off after I read those articles, I'm almost afraid to see what my voice mail is going to be like when I turn it back on," he sighed, rubbing his head a bit, "I wonder how many people she's convinced that I was responsible for Helen's disappearance," he slumped in his chair.

"Yeah saw that article. Sorry Nick..." Connor said softly. It had been a load of crap, twisted half-truths and outright lies. But the press was eating it up."Shes really pushing the whole 'broken boy falling for his professor and mentor' bit too. The reporter that called kept trying to push the whole narrative and asking why I had helped 'get rid of Helen Cutter when she got in the way of the affair' and if I 'had any comment about the whispers of treason charges and collusion' of all things" Connor sighed and folded his arms on the table and let his head fall onto them.

Cutter sighed, "and to make matters worse Christine is putting her name as the source, so people will think its genuine and we can't do anything because of the ARC and we have to keep saying no comment,"

"I know... I understand why but... the whole no comment thing, just... feels like giving up and letting her win" Connor said with a sigh as he lifted his head slightly.

"It does ..." Cutter sighed, "but the way things have gone I don't know if telling our side of the story would even work at this point, we've been in the press for the last couple of months, most of the country has made up its mind," he stared down at his coffee, "I wish we could convince James to let us put out some kind of press statement at least, even if we didn't mention the ARC,"

Connor sighed and dropped his head back down to rest on his arms. "Yeah... but it probably wouldn't change anything, one way or the other. We're just... going to have to try and ride it out. And pick up the pieces when its over and see what we can do with what is left."

"I'll just be glad when this is all over, when everyone forgets about us and we can get back to the ARC and being able to work with the team again, without worrying about getting ambushed by the press," Cutter said with a sigh.

Connor nodded. It would definitely be easier if they had the ARC and the missions and everything to distract themselves with. Would make it easier to kinda ignore the press and forget about how things were falling apart. Connor was trying really hard not to think about the university and how that dream of getting his degree and actually making something of his life was once again slipping away. "It cant go on forever... they'll find someone else to focus on eventually."

"Surely our lives can't be that fascinating for them," Cutter groaned, "not compared to celebrities and politicians," he sighed, "hopefully they run out of stories or some new scandal comes along and everyone forgets about us,"

"Or at least target one of the politicians or something right? Someone needs to go create some scandals... get the attention back where it belongs" Connor said with a small weak laugh.

Cutter managed a weak grin at that, "so what do you think James would say if we asked if he could manufacture some kind of press scandal that would get the attention off of us? Surely James knows some secrets that would be worth leaking to the press to get this to die down?"

"He'd probably say that would be a blatant misuse of his power and access...." Connor said with a bit of a mocking tone and then grinned. "But he might... couldn't hurt to ask?"

Cutter snorted at Connor's mocking tone and returned the grin, "well when we check in this week, I'll make sure to ask James what he thinks, maybe we can ask Jenny as well and get her on board with the idea, she's got enough connections of her own,"

"Definitely don't think it could hurt any at this point" Connor said with a nod.

It had been a mistake, checking the new reports back home... Connor was looking a bit more worn and ragged than usual but he was there.... though he was definitely going to need a few more coffees to get through the rest of the day at the rate he was going.

So tired.
