20th Century Food Crimes, Cont. - Friday 8/4 - Period 1

"You know," said Summer, with a little bit of a musing tone and a slight sigh, "this week, I really wanted to go in for a theme, but as I was researching what to bring to the courtroom of culinary crimes this week, I had three that really stuck out hat didn't really follow much of a theme, but were too good to just let go to waste. So today's a bit of a miscellany, featuring two sandwiches and doing something terrible to lemons."

“You say ‘too good to waste’,” Stark said with a sigh, “and I feel like we all ought to run from the room. What did lemons ever do to you, Summer? What did sandwiches ever do?” What had the students ever done, for that matter?

To be fair, they did sign up for this class, sooooo….

"First off," Summer continued, unfazed as ever by these half-hearted protests, "if you're in need for a great sandwich idea to pack into a lunch, might I suggest taking your bologna above and beyond with a lovely bologna and prune sandwich, made with bread literally from a can, too!"

“Bread comes in cans? I didn’t know bread came in cans. How does that work? Wouldn’t it be all squished?” Stark might be getting stuck on that detail instead of the mildly horrifying flavor combination. Possibly on purpose.

Knowing that how bread existed in a can would be revealed in due time, Summer kept going. "And if bologna's not your luncheon meat of choice, perhaps you might liked corned beef….but as the bread! And the filling is baked beans, because you know what? Why the fuck not?"

“That just sounds messy,” Stark sighed. “How are you meant to eat that without beans dripping everywhere?”

"And, finally, as promised, sardine-stuffed lemons. The less said about that one, the better. I'll just let those do the talking for themselves."

“I do not want to hear what those lemons have to say,” Stark said firmly. “Or the sardines.”

"We do, however," Summer said brightly, "want to hear what you all have to say about these lemons, and sardines, and everything else. Dig in, guys, and let's discuss!"

At least one of them is considering never eating a sandwich again.

And at least one of them is looking far too proud of herself right now.

Well, that was generally how she sort of looked throughout all these classes, to be honest.

Maybe these classes were why Stark kept forgetting to eat lunch somedays. The thought of the foods just lingered on other days.

Don't you dare put your inability to function as a proper adult in this society on Summer, Stark.

In fact...

"If you keep forgetting to eat lunch," she chirped at some point, "I'm not ordering you pizza next time, I'm just making you these."

"Summer."

That was quite the betrayed look Stark was giving her.

"I thought we were friends!"

"We are friends," Summer assured him.

Very good friends, even!

"And friends," she insisted, "don't let their friends go forgetting about meals all the time. And if that means threatening them with horrible other foods to get them to be better about choosing foods they actually want to eat at times they should be eating them, well, then............so be it."

Extremely good friends.

"I don't forget all the time," Stark protested. "Only sometimes." More often than he should, really.

"I won't forget today. I promise. Maybe we could have lunch? That isn't sandwiches," he added hurriedly.

"More than you should," Summer emphasized, because the narrative on that one really bore repeating.

But the question had her eyeing Stark a bit...speculatively.

"We cooooould," she said. "I guess it would be a good way to make sure you actually keep that promise, too..."

"I could buy you a lunch," Stark offered. "Since you bought the pizza the other night. If you like. You'll know I'm eating if you're right there!"

And, you know, the added bonus of getting to spend extra time with Summer. His favorite person to spend time with.

"And it might be nice," he added, just a little hesitant, "to just sit and have a meal?"

That suspicious look still lingered for a moment, but, well, if he was offering to pay...

"Where would you want to go?"

"Somewhere without sandwiches," Stark said very seriously.

"Maybe something different? There are places I've never actually eaten inside of. Maybe...Mexican? We could have tacos?"

"Sure," said Summer, "tacos are good. Let's go get tacos."

Said with a small, slightly enigmatic smile that might make some people half-wonder if terrible things would be done to tacos in the very near future.

Or maybe it was just a smile.

Hard to tell, really.

Stark fully expected terrible things to be done to every food he could ever think of, eventually.

"Good. Yes. Tacos. For lunch. Maybe nachos too?"

There were probably horrible nacho concoctions to be made as well.

"You can make sure I eat something and I can make sure you eat and you can think of the most horrible things to do to tortillas for later!"

"Probably something with cottage cheese and lime jello," Summer mused, in a deciding tone, probably way too quickly and fondly for anyone's comfort.

"But we'll get into that after we have some food that isn't gross."

"Nothing gross for lunch," Stark said, grinning.

"There may be time for gross things later."

He didn't have any plans for the rest of the day after eating some tacos, after all.

"Well, calm down," said Summer, lest Stark go and think he was getting away with something here, "let's at least make it through lunch before we start speculating on after."

"It wouldn't have to be later today," Stark said meekly. "There could be something gross another day entirely."

"But lunch first, yes. Tacos for both of us. And maybe drinks?"

"Tacos," Summer smirked faintly, "nachos, now drinks, too...Anything else you want to add to that?"

"You said not to think about later," Stark pointed out. "So... no. Nothing right now. Unless there's something else you might want?"

That was the correct answer, Stark. Good job. Gold star.

"Those little crispy cinnamon twist things," Summer said, with a decisive nod, not even missing a beat.

He could be taught!

"Oh that's a good idea. Dessert!"

Maybe there could be more dessert too but Stark was going to not press his luck right now.

"Can I ask about something much later? Another day?"

"Yeah," said Summer, head tilting a little in intrigue. "Sure. What's up?"

"Next week, next Friday...Steven says there's a party for Watts. For his birthday?"

Stark, that didn't need to be a question.

"I thought...I wondered... if you would like to go, with me?"

Summer looked at Stark for a good, long moment as if deciding something before she asked, "What, like, as your date?"

"... if you wanted?" Stark said, looking uncertain now. "Or just as my friend if you'd rather that. You are the best one I have. But.... I'd like that. If you would."

Honestly, Summer had mostly just asked because she was curious about what Stark would say if she did. And she regarded him very thoughtfully for another moment, the faint smile on her face growing a little with the end there, and she shrugged.

"Yeah, okay," she said. "Why not? Just...you know....don't be weird about it."

"I'll do my best not to be weird," Stark promised.

That was the best he could do!

"But good! I'm glad." Just in case the big grin on his face hadn't given that away.

Yeah, Summer had maybe gotten a hunch that that was the case. And it was hard to keep her own grin tempered in response.

"Okay, then," she said, figuring he'd get a kick out of this, so, you know, you're welcome, Stark, "it's a date."

And he had been doing very well in not making it weird thus far. Especially by Stark standards!

Sometimes Stark literally beamed. Sometimes, like now, it was figurative.

"A date," he repeated, grinning even wider. "Should I consult with my stylist?"

Summer just shook her head a little. Fish in a barrel, she swore...

"Honestly," she said, "I should be insulted that you would even ask that question."

"It wasn't meant as an insult! I know how busy she can be!"

Stark's grin dimmed only slightly.

"I should ask, I forgot before, did your party go well last week? For Annie?"

"I was kidding, Stark," said Summer, with just the barest of sighs. He was doing so well, too. "And it went....really well, actually. I think it was a pretty big hit. Thanks for all your help with the set-up, by the way."

Him and all the shirtless cat cafe dudes.

"Good. I thought it would. Your parties always do. But I wanted to ask. Just to be sure."

The grin had turned into something softer.

"And you're welcome, for the help. Any time you need it. Or want it."

"I know," Summer assured him, with a soft nod to meet that softening smile. "You're always good for helping, and I appreciate that."

"I like to be useful. When I can. But you know that."
